Modeling Questions

Hey, so I'm modeling a spinny chair with a thing that flips down in front of it. It' part of the chair, but I don't know whether to extrude it from the chair or model it separately. Like, if I extrude the flip-down tray (let's call it that) from the chair and rig it, wilol it create distortions at the hinge?

  • If the tray can move, you can have it separate from the chair. When you add bones, just ensure that the tray's geometry's weight map is set to 100% for the tray bone. You won't get any distortions that way.

If I model separae, does it matter if polys, edges, or verts match where the tray "attaches" to the chair?

In my experience working with primitives and DZFire's excellent assortment of Nurnies & Greebles, for rigid objects, the polygon meshes don't need to align to rig them. Which makes sense if you think about mechanical parts in the real world.

If you mean "Should you make the faces where the flippy thing hinges"? That depends.

If it's just for you, and they will never be visible, you could delete them if you want.

If it's for distribution, may as well keep them - someone might want to render it detatched.
