Tutorials for beginners?

Need tutorials. Consider me a complete newbie. I am having a hard time with DAZ. Just downloaded it yesterday and did the elf tutorial thingy but am still completely confused. Especially how long the renders are. I was only at 3% at 23 minutes when trying to render a 2d image of the elf thing from the tutorial. Is this normal? Who has that amount of time? Is there a tutorial on render settings explaining things?

I do use Blender and their settings are easier. Though I am having a hard time coloring my modles and making them look like anything. I like how DAZ already has that all done for you.

I have a lot of other questions but that can wait. The main problem is learning DAZ and then I'll start asking about using Blender models in DAZ and visa versa and how to alter models and textures to make them look how I want in DAZ rather than using somebody else's work.

Thank You.

Have you tried the DAZ help videos? http://www.daz3d.com/help/help-daz-3d-video-tutorials

As for render times, are you rendering in CPU mode, or ar you using an nvidea graphic card? CPU renders can take quite a while. Though, even with a graphic card, render times can be in the hours range, depending on what's in the scene.

This thread might help you finding out if your computer is slow or fast in rendering Iray: http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/53771/iray-starter-scene-post-your-benchmarks#latest

EDIT: also recommended - the New User contests. They cover all sorts of topics, and in the WIP you get hands on help with your problems. http://www.daz3d.com/forums/categories/new-user-contests-and-events

Yeah, I'm with Bee!  DAZ has a lot of great beginner tutorials on their YouTube channel, too, to get you started.

  • Thanks, this is awesome. I just downloaded DAZ last night so I haven't played with it much boy, is it intimidating. I had DAZ years ago but don't remember much at all about it and this newer version looks much more complex.

    Thanks again.

My Art Studio thread has a list of tutorials and tips, been doing it for four years as my first thread (going on thread 8) started when I first began using the studio. (Before Iray was available through the studio.)  There's a lighting tutorial that I spent quite a bit of time on, will definitely help you as it goes step by step but also explains what it is doing. I was a training professional so no skips are stepped, it baby steps you through it. That thread is also a product showcase thread, so if you want to get tips on products or just see what questions folks have, what they've showcased, you might want to pop in. Many folks don't know about the Art Studio forum, and it's got great threads/renders.

We make the "intimidating" more down to earth, so hop on over! Go to the second post in my current thread to see the list of tips links and tutorials.
