My old college professor told me "Use special effects to enhance the story and with purpose, but not to tell the story."

My own motto "A great story can survive poor special effects but great special effects can not save a terrible story."

Examples of the first part of the motto...the Twilight Zone.

Examples of the second part...a crap load of current television shows and movies but Skyline and Battlefield: Earth stands out to me.

Battlefield: Earth, a book by L. Ron Hubbard, was not that bad of the story, I read it when it was published (1982), movie, however, was a true disaster wink
