Various Zev0 products, queries about:

1.) I have Tween Julie and some of her characters, Tween Ryan and same and the Caucasian Little Ones. Are the Growing Up skins significantly different from either or were they just a first on the market child-skin solution? (And very welcome I bet they were too!) They're only Caucasian, yes?

2.) Skin Builder for G2. I have the Cayman Studios g2-G3 skin converter. Has anybody combined the two? I know Skin    Builder for G3 is on the horizon but who knows when? ( and I expect it to be more like $5O than $15....)

Skin Blender for G3 is already in the store. Is that the same thing as Skin Builder? http://www.daz3d.com/skin-blender

Nope. Skin Builder for G2 used LIE to sort of let you add all the elements of a skin one by one. I think. I don't have it yet! There's a thread in the Commercial forum about the G3 version which was in progress when we lost one of the PAs. it apparently no longer uses LIE and has merged with the Skin Overlay thing that is used to add freckles and wrinkles to  existing G2 skins.  No idea when it will be out.

Skin Builder for G2 does use LIE, but you can then either use LIE Baker or go into the temp directory and copy out the results.

The good part of making it LIE, though, is that while it's all layered you can go in and tweak specific things without having to run the script again.

That is true! I've never used LIE baker or indeed any digital baking, although I'm a wiz at it in real life. I have experienced th disconcerting trauma of losing layered images when I reload something though so I'll have to look into that.

But Will, you don't use G3 so you can't comment on using it to transfer... but can you comment on more? Are the skins great?

Skinbuilder 3 will not use LIE, or leave overlay details in LIE format. There are two reasons for this. 1, it is very slow apon reading, and 2, layers can get lost if the temp folder is cleared out or modified since all LIE based options are saved there. What we did with Skinbuilder 3 was when you choose an overlay or added detail, it automatically bakes it to the skin. It also now has an undo process button, so you can undo the action or result you don't like. Then, all your work is saved to a texture folder of your choice, no LIE stored in temp. This is also done because it is now a merchant resource and you cannot distribute files that are calling for temp lie maps in Daz temp folder, so all texture details are baked in a folder structure you chose, which is linked to a material preset that SkinBuilder 3 allows you to create. Hope that makes sense. We only went with LIE for the original version because we did not have the knowledge of how to bake like the new version does. Oh and the reason this version is taking so long is because we have to make sure everything works for 3dl and Iray since it supports both. If this was an Iray only product it would have been released already lol.

    Dreamfarmer:

Skin Builder for Genesis/Genesis2 is awesome. Among other things, it allows you to add different style eyebrows, to control those eyebrow colors, etc. It's even betterer with Skin Overlay, which adds all sorts of other details.

It combines _very_ nicely with NGS Anagenessis, which only needs a good diffuse map and can make really cool looking stuff, though sometimes I prefer to use other skins.

My only minor complaint is that it makes one map per material zone, but, again, it's pretty trivial to go into the tmp directory and copy one map for face, torso, limbs.

All things I hear about Skin Builder for G2 AND g3 are very exciting. Does anybody know about the Growing Up Skin Resource part of my original post?

1 - Well, to begin with, the Zev skins don't use a custom UV map, so they're more comparable to the Tween Julie and Ryan add-ons than the base figures themselves.  There's a lot more options for eyebrows with Zev's than with most character sets, let alone the base figures, and the growing up skins seem a lot less "glammed up" than the official DAZ Tween skins.

2 - Yep.  Do it all the time and they work fine together.  The one thing that gets funky is the tanline generator, as the tanlines on the lower part of the body seem to vanish when transfered to G3 due to the different placement.

"Are the Growing Up skins significantly different from either or were they just a first on the market child-skin solution?"

It was the first on the market specifically tarketing younger characters. Some of the skins that come with teen characters have very distinctive brow shapes that do not look right for younger kids. Also, the Growing Up skins are blemish free so making skin that matched younger characters could be achieved. It also contains brow options that are not shaped or tweased. It only comes in Caucasian unfortunately. The main problem at the time was that the Growing Up morphs were available, people could create younger characters, but there were no real younger skins that suited characters younger than teens, giving that slight uncanny appearance. People were loading teen and adult skins on kids. Hense the creation of Growing Up Skins to fill that void. Now that Brow Remover is available, changing the brows on some skins could do the trick on other character skins, but it was only released much later. Still, if you want a base skin for younger skins, Growing Up skins will do the job. If not, try using other skins, change the brows on them and that could work as well. I suggest loading a teen skin on a character using Growing Up much younger than average teen-age and you will see how the more shaped brows affect the facial appearance. If you are happy with the look then the Growing Up skins is not needed.

I've definitely seen the problems with the uncanny older skins on kids-- I was really happy when I could finally afford Julie and a couple of Little Ones. Since I do have Brow Remover I think I'll give that a try (and fiberhair brows too actually).

But this is great info. I think, despite Facegen trying to steal my attention, I will leave the Growing Up Skins on the shelf, but pick up Skin Builder for G2 and the Shapeshift morphs (which I was so sure I was buying I felt no need to ask about!)

Thank you especially to Zev0 for taking the time to explain to me.

...so I could save these to say an "SBP Skins" folder in my Library and not have to save as a separate materials preset like I have been doing.

Still hanging onto that GC for when it is released.  Thank you for making it both 3DL and Iray compatible. The extra wait time is a small price to pay.

Yes. With the new structure you can save full skin or partial material presets. EG say you create a skin, you save that base face material, add makeup, then save a material preset for that and you can swap between the two as the texture maps for both options are now in your texture folder. Basically the minute you click save material preset it will save those textures in your selected texture folder and automatically be assigned to it.
