Making part of a figure not visible make the whole figure not visible in renders.

I have a scene with a Genesis figure in it (can't remember whether it's 2 or 3 and it's currently on a long render so can't check) I wanted to do a thing with a very wide angle camera where the eyes would be to get a first person view which would incude parts of the figure so for the head, eyes, jaws, tounge etc. I made them all non-visible in render and non-visible in Daz which looked fine in the Daz editor but when the scene was rendered (3Delight) none of the figure was visible. Anyone had anything similar and know how to fix it?

How did you hide those surfaces?

  • By selecting for example "head" and then "Visible in render" - "No", "Visible" - "No". Is the only way to physicallu delete that part of the mesh?

  • .... Fixed it by hiding the geometry in the geometry editor but it takes a lot longer.

There are several ways to hide parts of the object. I prefer using the Geometry editor to hide surfaces, but you can click on the eye icons for the parts you want to hide in the scene tab. You can also hide surfaces via the Surfaces Tab. Click on the Surfaces tab, then click on Editor. You should see the object listed there. Double-click on the object to see the surfaces. For figure/character objects, you may also need to double-click on the Surfaces sub-parameter. Select the surface(s) you want to hide, type "opacity" (without quotes) in the filter field at the top of the right column, and set the Opacity parameter to "0". (In Iray, the Cornea and Eye Reflection/Eye Moisture will need to have refraction also set to "0".)

Using the Tool Settings for the Geometry Editor, you can hide surfaces by clicking on the eye icon, much like you would do in the Scene tab. It's much faster than using the mouse and pop-up menus. Tool Settings is found in the Windows->Tab (Panes) menu and after opening it, you can drag it to dock to one of the side columns. I keep mine on the same side as the Scene Tab.

Unless i'm mistaken thats's effectively what I was doing originally but it made the whole figure dissaper.? Or does it work differently? Guess I'll have to try it.

Thanks, that would help a lot, If I can select a surface use Ctrl + to expand the selection then hit eye that would make thinks a LOT quicker either that or is there a way to assign a hot key to Hide surfaces ?.

  • Actually had a brainwave over the weekend, the simplest/quickest way to do this is with an opacity map, it also gives much finer control over what you hide and what is visible.
