how do I load ground shaders?

Hello - newbie question... I purchashed  some ground shaders (http://www.daz3d.com/ground-shaders-for-daz-studio) thinking I would be able to use that to add grass to a scene, but I realize I dont know how to load it... I've been looking in other forum posts.... is there some trick in the surfaces pane I am missing or would that load through enviornments... or I am way off and need other stuff... any assistance would be much appreciated!

Thanks

You require some sort of geometry to which you can apply the shaders. The shaders themselves merely represent surface settings. A flat ground plane primitive will do. or any geometric shape approximating the ground surface that you desire. Add that to your scene and position it, then with that object selected, apply the shaders.

  • aha! Thank you!

  • oops, i guess i had another question. So I made a plane primative and I located it right under my other object - but it's not rendering with the grass shader i have. I dont see anything in smart contect so I was going to the content library and - with the plane primative selected - double clicking on the grass shadders in content library -  nothing changes in the scene pane. I am supposed to be using the surfaces pane for the shaders? I am a bit confused... any more guidance you can offer would be much appreciated. Thank you

  • In order to apply a shader preset you need to have not only the item selected but also the surfaces you wish to change (because, unlike a materials preset, the sahder preset doesn't have a list of surfaces to affect). The easiest way to do this is using the Surface Selection tool from the Tools menu, but you can also select the item in the Scene pane and the surfaces in the Editor tab of the Surfaces pane.

  • Thank you!  got it working now - I appreciate the help!

  • oops, I thought I had this working as I got a plane primitive to render a version of what looked like grass, but then when I tried other grass shaders the same patter was showing up - now all i get is white when I try to render different shaders on a primitive.  I've been trying other shaders in the surfaces pane under iray but I'm not having luck. In this example I just created a plane primitive then tried to apply a grass shader from the surfaces tab but it spot renders all white. Im getting that white on all the other shaders i try also.  Can you tell me what I'm doing wrong? Any assistance would be much appreciated!

  • And you have the plane's surface selected?

  • thanks Richard, I thought i had it selected but I did not... i am back on track, thanks again
