well I use to pay a subscription fee for some of the new release anime games. that way if I didn't like them I could drop them with out a lot invested them .. But if I buy streaming games now days its just what I can get on uplay games. they have a 30 days return policy they are real good about support and customer service. I don't use steam anymore or for Uplay either I just go direct with a uplay manager down loader that goes through m,y NVIDIA manager and download it that way. using the NVIDIA Girlfriend experience panel . I only do it that way because I use 3dvision, & Shield it it helps me keep my games on my PC for playig off line. . I stopped using steam. back last November and canceled all my subscriptions. when they updated their TOS. I started out with steam I never spent much and they took paypal. But now I have moved on mostly because of NVIDIA
Apps are becoming more popular on Steam. So DAZ Studio would not be out of place at all. Not only that, but putting DAZ Studio in front of game developers is not a bad idea either.
Above, I'm seeing some outdated or incorrect info in this thread. While Steam does provide an option for developers to use DRM, Steam is not itself DRM'd and does not enforce it. Many games on Steam do not use DRM at all. You can launch the game directly without Steam activating or running. What happens (and has happened) is that a developer or publisher demands DRM and so Valve added the option... otherwise they would have been very limited in content in their early days. But it's the game/app developer that adds it to the product, not Steam. For games, Valve takes a cut of the sales. For free apps, I'm not sure what Valve would want or how that works. Also, Greenlight is dead.
I've never had the impression that Daz Studio is really targeted at game developers, despite the presence of the Game Licenses.
...not being much of a gamer (which causes some people I know to consider me a heretic by being into 3D and not computer games), I have very little use for an online games site like Steam. I even deleted GeForce Experience from my workstation, and manually go to Nvidia for driver updates, as it is primairly geared towards gaming as well.
In my book, the computer cheats so why deal with what eventually becomes a Kobyashi Maru, what's the fun in that?. Never was much into competitive or P vs. P games like many of the multi player online ones have become either. I'd rather do RPGs at a table with a group of friends where everyone can interact more directly than sitting at home on the computer having to key in what my character is doing or saying. Besides, Leela's personality doesn't come over as cute and goofy in text as she does "in person".
I hate to burst your bubble but DIM and Connect is Daz doing something similar to Steam. I hate DRM but I hate having to back everything up even more, I still do not buy Connect products or use the Connect installer but for those who do more power to you. I have a Steam accout and I play steam games and I like the fact I don't have to keep the disks to play my games. I used to lose my Unreal Tournament 2004 disks (this is my favorite game & it does not work on Win 10 so guess what I am not upgrading) and I would have to purchase new ones when I had to reinstall the game. Now my steam account has this old favorite of mine and this completly does away with the need for me to have to hunt down the install disks. I bring this up because once apon a time Daz used to have a hard backup service and I had them back up my Daz files and boy was that alot of disks. Now we have DIM and Daz keeps the files for us. It does not require alot of space because it is just the one file and everyone who has a license can access the file via DIM. Consequently no need for disk backup Daz has my files I just have to keep my data on a usb pendrive and If things go sideways just reinstall.
DAZ Install Manager is nice for holding all the old content I don't use often, but stuff I use regularly is on the local drive to back up so I don't have to redownload if technical difficulties occur; all I have to do is make sure I get any updates and keep them backed up.
Blender is even available on Steam.
I was only suggesting it as an additional market, you can still buy Modo etc from their respective sites.
It would not change anything as far as users prefered buying downloading etc habits just add an extra alternative and reach some new users.
I have played games on Steam, and frankly... I HATE Steam! It's such a pain.
Please Daz 3D, don't EVER put Daz Studio on Steam!!!!!
If someone doesn't like Steam, they don't need to use it. But why limit options? If it gets the product to a wider audience, all the better I say. No one is saying to limit availability of DAZ Studio to Steam.
From my understanding it isn't, but you have an increasing vocal minority that think it should be due to having some of the best 3D content and that much of it can be imported into certain game engines without too much trouble. this saves the wannabe developers from having to learn to make their own assets for their games.
I am a gamer and I develop for games. I spend about 5-10 hrs a week on steam gaming and on workshop forums. That being said, I think DS should stay very far away from steam, wrong target audience and I feel the cons far outweigh advantages.
