Install Manager - A few Questions

Is it normal for files to always be in download window? Every time I open the install manager there is 2+ gigabyte worth of files to be dowbloaded. After I go through downloading and installing, they will be there again the next day, sometimes the same day. I thought maybe my hard drive was failing. So I scanned it and ran a surface test and everything looks fine.

In the setting, on the download page there are a bunch of applications checked. I only have Daz Studio. There are other things like "General", "Publing Build" etc at the bottom. So what all should be checked here?

And lastly, the delete package once installed - is there a reason to keep the zip files? I thought maybe this was deleting my files or something so I tried having this set on, and tried with it off. The files still keep showing up in the ready to download folder.

And I just installed everything in my window. While typing this,. they have shown back up.

Thanks.

  • The repopulating downloads list should not be happening - it may indicate an issue with your account if the items are also listed in the Installed (or Ready to Install) tab.

Publishing Build, Private Build, Public Build are not applications - they are different versions (one for PAs, public beta, and private beta respectively). There's no point in having the first or last checked unless you join the groups that get them, the middle one you want if you might try a public beta version of an application. Beyond that, you want the applications and versions you use checked.

Keeping the zips saves on bandwidth if you uninstall and reinstall, at the expense of disc space. It should not make any difference to the issue you are seeing.

There are no files in the installed tab. They always go back to the ready to download tab. There is also one file that will not install. It is the Install Manager Default Filters file. Every time I try to install it it says install failed.

For what it's worth I haven't seen anything that resembles what you are getting. And like Richard says, it may be an idea to keep the origihal ZIP files around in case you ever want to go back and check something manually (for instance on another computer) or if perhaps you just don't trust "cloud" storage, heh.

In my leftmost column, "items ready for downloading" I have things that I don't feel like downloading yet, but everything (probably over 200 items; I haven't counted) installed properly and then was either deleted or left on my drive, depending on how I felt at the time. My "installed items" is filled with over 200 items as I say - I've never had a problem with that since I set up the current versions 1.5 years ago approx.

The only problems I have had is that very rarely a model might have a physical error in a path or is missing something it wants. Most recently one of the medieval type "armor" sets (as in knights in shiny armor, sort of thing) from the holiday sale seems to want something to do with Darius 7 which I don't have. A minor bug.

That sounds as if DIM is having trouble acessing the Manifests folder (and possibly the Downloads folder), among others. Are you using the default locations?

  • No, I had to install on a different drive.

    The programs are installed here:
    E:\Program Files\DAZ 3D
    E:\Program Files (x86)\DAZ 3D

And my user folder location was changed in Windows to point here:
    E:\Users\Public\Documents\DAZ 3D

Here is how I have the manager setup:

  • In the Applications tab, you don't need the DIM folder at all.

    The Installation tab looks fine.

Your problem is likely to be the Downloads tab - you should not use the Program Files folder for data, only for applications. Set the Download To folder to one you can write to without needing an admin prompt and try again.

Had you hacked the .ini file to chnage the Manifests folder? That doesn't show in the preferences but if it is also pointing to program Files that would be another potential issue.

No, I wasn't aware of anything I needed to do there. Is that in the Install Manager durectory?

    Thanks for all the help!

I also wanted to ask, the only program I have in the applications list on the downloads tab is Daz Studio. Do I need all of that other stuff? It was checked by default.

No, it's just something you might have done so I needed to check.

In theory at least just having Daz Studio checked should show all of the content you need - if DS needs the Poser files then those should be listed.

  • That fixed it. Thanks a bunch Richard!
