  • Just for the record, about 15 minutes ago I purchased a couple PA items from the sale and a couple FG items. As of this time, my banner has not changed.

My prediction (hah hah hah) is that it'll adjust once a week, possibly with a new freebie each week. Ramping up, yes, by 5 or 10%, so that by the final week of March everybody is wild with purchasing madness. And there will be a footnote saying the discount can't be retroactively applied.

I ALSO predict there's going to be ANOTHER banner based on sale purchase totall the last week of the sale.

    HEY an explanation from Daz_Steve

"If you buy something from March Madness you become a bonus buyer.  It gives you an additional discounts for a few days.  If you buy anything else during that period you stay a bonus buyer. the 10% works on gift cards, memberships, everything.  If the item has an SKU under 16000 the 10% becomes 30%.  This is on top of any other discounts or offers.
Any non-free purchase triggers it.  You stay in for the current day, plus two more.  10% is the max (30% on older) unless there is a special for a given day or days.  These rules are subject to change and adjustment (but none are planned), but that's how it's working now."

  • Oh. That is insidious. They should really advertise that these are the rules. It certainly creates an incentive to buy *something* cheap every couple of days.

  • dreamfarmerdreamfarmer Posts: 2,128

There will be more freebies, too, according to same.

I've been doing some calculations of the discounts obtainable on different types of item under different circumstances, and thought I'd share them (footnotes are in square brackets)...

March Madness Discounts PC+ Items non-Daz Originals Daz Originals[1]
    New[2] Normal Old[3] New[2] Normal Old[3] New[2] Normal Old[3]
    Normal Customer MM Item[4] 1 item[5] N/A N/A N/A 40% 40% 40% 58% 58% 58%
    2+ items[5] N/A N/A N/A 50% 50% 50% 65% 65% 65%
    Other Item 0%[6] 0%[6] 0%[6] 0% 0% 0% 30% 30% 30%
    Bonus Buyer[7] MM Item[4] 1 item[5] N/A N/A N/A 46% 46% 58% 62% 62% 71%
    2+ items[5] N/A N/A N/A 55% 55% 65% 69% 69% 76%
    Other Item 10%[6] 10%[6] 30%[6] 10% 10% 30% 37% 37% 51%

The blue-shaded rows indicate the discounts shown up front in the store.

    Notes

    1. Discount available to PC+ members only. Non-members should apply the non-Daz Original discount instead.
    2. "New" items are items which were released in the last 6 weeks, and have a "new" icon in the shop. New MM items (see below) are Newly Mad and Still Mad items.
    3. "Old" items are items with a SKU less than 16000 (before appoximately March/April 2013, but som later releases have lower SKUs and some earlier releases have higher ones), or items by RuntimeDNA.
    4. "MM Items" are Newly Mad, Still Mad, Featured Artists' Catalogues (barring new and PC+ items) or Associated Items.
    5. The number of MM items simultaneously in the cart at the time of checkout.
    6. Discount is in addition to the substantial discount offered to PC+ members on PC+ items.
    7. Customers become a "Bonus Buyer" on purchase of any non-free item from the store. The discount applies to subsequent purchases for the next few days (see Dreamfarmer's post above).

And this is one of Daz's simpler sales...

[Added] I'll also note that, before you go chasing that 76% discount, Daz regularly have 80% off V4/M4 sales - so if it's really old stuff you're interested in it' may be worth waiting.

My Banner says that the 10% discount does not apply to Gift Cards and Memberships.

But, the compounding of the Bonus Buyer stacking is dependent on buying something every couple of days throughout the sale in order to stay in the bonus buyer promotion, from the sounds of it.

So... the easiest way to stay in it is to buy a low price, deeply discounted item every couple of days to ensure that your bonus status doesn't reset?

I guess so. There are items in fastgrab that I would like to get now. I'll wait till tomorrow, that adds another day to my BB status. I want to use the March coupon on it anyway.

Weird that they are keeping it a secret. If I had not been in the forums, I wouldn't know. There is still nothing I really want or need. I bought soooo much in the past year, a large portion of the store LOL, and I hope this trend continues that there's nothing I really need so I can save money. For the past year, I've been purchasing almost anything I MAY need in the future because they were on steep discount. I think I'm pretty much stocked up! Unless something is in extreme discount or there's a great new utility or shader (or cats or dogs!), I'm pretty much over saturated with products already now.

I do kind of WANT to buy things even though I don't need them, (I have become a Daz shopping addict!) but I really have to cut down financially. I'm thrilled with FaceGen and still playing with that. I love Grutilda but it will have to wait for a steeper sale unfortunately...I was considering purchasing the male and female DazO characters from day one, which would have been a no-brainer, right into cart last year, but I already have sooo many similar characters just like that. I'm already becoming a Daz hoarder, with products stuffed everywhere in external hard drives and still unused LOL.

And disregard everything I just wrote because I will probably end up buying all those things I don't need even though I'm going broke, because I truly am a 3D product junkie and need help...

And the iray dirt decals (can't believe something like this didn't exist before).

Actually a product was released in April last year http://www.daz3d.com/a-touch-of-dirt-for-iray

I love A Touch of Dirt. I use it a lot. It has both Geometry Shells and Decals, but the new Decal product seems to be a little different in two ways. It provides  specific decals for things like exposed brick, broken glass, etc. and it provides the decals on simple planes for use on flat surfaces. I've had great luck with products from both V3Digitimes and KindredArts, and both vendors are very helpful in the forums if you have a problem.

I'm thinking we joined around the same time, because I'm in that boat too. I've bought a lot in the past year, stocking up during sales or on things I need for projecta. I have so much now that I don't even know what I've got. So I'm hesitant to buy more at times. That didn't stop me from caving and buying FaceGen, because it's a tool I can use to create many characters for a long time to come. But I am pretty tapped out at the moment. Love the new stuff coming out, and will buy as I can. The rest will go on the wishlist.

I caved and bought a cheap merchant resource that was PC+ and also RDNA, which I later discovered was part of the sale... Now I'm spending time that I was supposed to spend on my art looking through featured artists' catalogs with SKUs less than 16000, more time wasted. Why don't they make it easy on the buyer and provide a link to all those items? It's like they WANT to make it difficult to purchase things... What is wrong with marketing??? If I was DT, I'd tweet "The over-rated FAILING Daz marketing team that would LOSE HUGELY to my marketing efforts, which are the BEST marketing concepts, everyone KNOWS my marketing strategy would WIN by millions over theirs, is just terrible. SAD!"  Kidding, Daz marketing, you are usually brilliant, but this secret sale kind of baffles me!

  • @Llynara and @Wonderland - exactly the same sentiment for me. I resisted FaceGen. Too steep of a price. I tried the demo out, it is cool. I wonder if it is really worth that much more than Headshop OneClick for what seems to be similar function.

But I'll have to wait until the novelty wears off and it comes down to around $19 or less, which I assume may happen some day... maybe when Genesis 4 comes out. :)

But every... other... thing... you said... *exactly*. They're are a couple Pro 7 packs I'd still like to add, if the price was super cheap.... and a few characters I don't have that are in my wishlist. Part of the problem is that when characters I didn't necessarily want, like Bethany, came out at rock bottom prices, I snapped them up with the idea that hair and clothes packages were auto-conforming... but in the process, it became very hard to justify the prices for Pro Packs I do want that rarely or never see steep discounts.

In the meantime, I'm getting to the point where the 256GB SD on my Surface Pro has over 200GB dedicated to DAZ. It is making me a much more discriminating buyer, all things considered.

  • That is - part of my is hoping for a mostly underwhelming sale - unless it is deals on specific items that I just can't refuse.

@donovancolbert Can you render on a Surface Pro??? Can you get IRay on it?

  • donovancolbertdonovancolbert Posts: 1,421

Well... you can do an Iray render in CPU mode. Mine is an i7 with Intel Iris 540 graphics... It is too bad that Iray is Nvidia proprietary, because it is a decent GPU chipset.

But, with that said, for anything complex, I use an i5 desktop with 32GB of RAM and a Nvidia GTX 750ti with 2GB.

Which still isn't ideal for rendering in Iray.

So... yeah, technically you can do an Iray render on an i7. But it won't take advantage of CPU. I also do some Reality renders on the i7, as Reality is GPU independent. Carrara too.

Really, when people with Nvidia GPUs complain about renders taking hours and hours... more than 6 or 7 hours... usually what has happened is that their scene is too big for the memory of their GPU and the render engine has dropped back to CPU mode. They still get an IRAY image when they're done, but it was rendered by their CPU, not their GPU.

Donovan, I just moved from a 750Ti to a 1050Ti, which I love. To fit things on my old card, I used the reduced textures script quite often. It's very good and it's free. There's a thread in the Freebie forums for it.

I have a 980, and when I googled 980 vs 1050Ti, I'm not seeing a big difference other than price (or course, this benchmark might have been really old). Why did you choose the 1050 over the 980?

I'm waiting for the 1080. But that will be a while...like, hopefully less than a year, but probably not.

When you move from a 7xx to something reasonable, often it requires a whole new computer.... it sure did with me, at which point my choice of included gfx cards was limited. Fortunately my vendor of choice did offer me a 1080... ;-) Dunno if that was what happened with Llynara.

They are both great cards and have good reviews. I have an older computer (rebuilt HP Z200 Workstation with an i5 processor) and knew the 1050Ti would work fine in it without any additional changes- didn't have to add more power, etc. The price was a bit better too. I just wanted a "good enough" card to tide me over until I eventually build a monster computer that can handle animation. That will hopefully be next year, and I've got way too much to do and learn till then. So I went from a 750Ti to a 1050Ti pretty painlessly. It was probably the easiest transition I've made. And I used my Amazon gift cards from Christmas, so it was a cheapie upgrade. laugh

    Here's the exact version I bought: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MF7EQJZ

Tip: when you're looking for graphics card bargains, be sure to get one with the latest Direct X support (should say GDDR5 on it.) I found that the price difference of some of the cheaper ones meant it didn't support the latest version.

@Llynara - I just found the Reduce Textures Script in the Freebies forum, and I'm loving it. But my shortlist is a 10x0 GPU. I'm going to need a new MB and case to make that move, though... so I'm holding off.

Unless some miracle happens with 9xx cards and they come out with a half-hight, half-size, single slot passive version of those... which could be an option if it existed. But magical unicorns might come and make my renders happen with Unicorn dust, too. :)

Oh I get how the free item thing works now - since it's only on the day's sale page but WASNT THERE for the past two days for me.

I don't really care about missing out on a free item or two, but this "buy just in case there's a secret sale you maybe might see if the website decides to work" secrecy rubbish puts me off shopping so much.

    ** Never mind, working now.

On the front page it shows the new item to be free and I have the green banner thing for purchasing something yesterday but I when I put it in my cart, it is full price...

New items in the freebie section...

Does purchasing something with a gift card (store credit) count toward extending the March Madness banner time? Or does store credit not count?

I'm considering buying a Gift Card and then making the rest of the March Madness purchases with it - but I'm worried that purchase made with store credit might not go toward renewing the banner time.

  • Just a heads-up: Apparantly, although a PC+ item from a March Madness store won't get the 50% (or 40%) discount, it does count as a "second purchase" to trigger the 50% discount on another item. Ravenhair is on sale, so if you pick a PC+ item from there it works.

When I bought something with storecredit yesterday, I immediately got the banner, so it has to count.

Yes, I always purchase with store credit. It counts. I got the banner.
