Creating something new?

Hello, my name is James.

While I have admired works done with Daz for some time, I am a new comer to its operation and am looking for some advise.. Accustomed as I am to other lesser programs such as Google Scketchup, I find that I am having to create in scketchup and convert the file into a daz recognizable file. The resulting affects are less than desirable to say the least. It makes me wonder if there is a more efficient way within Daz that perhaps I missed. As of this point I have only found the node editor, usable on only an existing model lacking many of the quick tools that have limited me to scketchup on many of my designs.

    Hi James

Can you show a model with the problem?

DAZ Studio is not a modelling program. You'd need something along the lines of Hexagon or Blender, or Carrara for that.

Thanks for the further info. As Bee says DAZ Studio has limited modelling capabilities.

...but there are several free programs, you may already know about, that can clean up an OBJ file.

Just importing the file and immediately exporting it again may be enough to make the file compatible with Studio.

Have a look at Poseray or Meshlab.

Sketch-up models have a known issue in trying to convert them to obj file formats. I just discovered this the other day helping another newbie trying to convert her sketch-up models over for use in DS and Hexagon.

Hexagon, while not the shiniest tool in the shed, it does a serviceable job and is inexpensive. Even though I have zbrush and Modo and Marvelous Designer in my modeling arsenal, Hex is my go-to program. And many PAs here use it as well.

  • Thank you all for the advise and sugestions. You have been a great help and I hope to post some of my works here soon. Thank you again.

Do not pass Go, do not pay two hundred dollars, go directly to Blender and grab it.  It's completely free, amazing, updated every five seconds, and enjoys a huge/massive/gargantuan/world wide network of users.  With half a million downloads a month, this thing is crazy popular.  There must be a billion tutorials for it and there's even a free training version.  Experience the enthusiasm and free flow of ideas that only open source can bring.
