How did you pick your avatar?

A short while back Ron Knights started a 'How did you choose your online name?' thread.  Which made me think, which is a miracle all by itself!!!!surprise, and what it made me think is this: as the thread title says: How did you pick your avatar (for these forums or elsewhere - assumiing TOS prmits!)

To start the ball rolling my avatar is that of Netherworks's Samedi.  I picked him up from RDNA many moons ago as he was a freebie, not really expecting much.  I was delighted at just how usable he was.  For a while I though that Tako Yakida (I hope I got that spelling right) was the creator as he used/used them in a series of delightful renders.  I think he even used him as an avatar on devinatART for a while.  When it dawned on me that I was not going to be stepping on his toes I 'adopted' him as my own avatar.  He is even used as my 'photograph' in the back of a book a friend put together lst year, alongside his actual real world photo, taken from a render I did a couple of years ago.  My friend knew I am a little publicity-shy and like my privacy so he used that image which chuffed me enormously as he hit the nail on the head!

  • Okay, I'll bite.  I had just started using DS and needed an avatar.  I happened to pick up Cat World Regenesis and Sadie for Genesis close together in my first PC sale.  I was curious to see how Sadie looked as a Jaguar.  That was in 3Delight over two years ago now.  I liked how her headshot turned out so much that I used it for my avatar since I needed one anyway.  I have a thing for cats and still go by Cat as a nickname in a lot of places.

Jaguar Sadie recently got a remake when I made my own LAMH preset for her and redid her headshot in Iray.  That is headshot is my current avatar.  Anyone who wants to see my original Jaguar Sadie avatar and read her story and take a look at her getting her new haircut can read about her here on my Lab thread.

    He's hairy, like me.

    Cheers,

    Alex.

Mine is the symbol for "female" made into a spider. I've also used a cartoon image of Phiddipus audax that I drew (still do on dA). I love spiders and am often misgendered online because I chose a screen name that is not overtly fem. (One day I will make a spider for DS. I'm not good enough at texturing yet to do it to my satisfaction.)

This is the closest I could find to my character Llynara, who's in a couple of my book series and has been with my forever. Working on a new avatar that's less sad looking.

Well, back in the day when I needed an avatar I didn't have a scanner and wasn't doing 3D art yet. But I had just purchased a painted figure of a French Carabinier on ebay and still had the images available. And since I was doing a lot of Napoleonic wargaming at the time it seemed appropriate. Not so much anymore, but I'm used to it. :-)
