Need help with LIE

I'm trying to use LIE editor to put an emblem on IRAY guardian suit. First, I tried adding it to the base color property (first attachment). Problem is that it's not as vivid as I want it. Then I tried adding it to diffuse overlay (second attachment). Vivid as I want it, but I cannot get the black areas to become transparent (I read about diffuse overlay and thought that's how it worked). Any tips? I would prefer to use LIE because I don't have photoshop to create masks, etc.

Thanks!

  • Have you tried adding  a mask layer to the overlay layer, so that only the logo shows?

Thanks, Richard! Diffuse Overlay Color is where I have my emblem. Diffuse Overlay Weight is probably what you're referring to by 'overlay layer'. I picked a few black/white images at random and I can tell it does what I want it to do.

Now, I just need to figure out how to make a mask. I may try paint.net as I was hoping to postpone the cost of photoshop for a bit. But I'm excited because surfaces are starting to make a little more sense. :)

  • No, I meant add a mask in the Layered Image Editor - but if the other parameter also works that's fine.

The mask just needs to be white for the logo, black for the background, so on a copy of the image try selecting by colour on the background, then fill that with black, invert, and fill with white.

Ah, I noticed the mask in LIE today. I broke down and got the Photoshop trial. Amazing software...how it can do smart selection and stuff. Created my mask and applied it to the Diffuse Overlay Weight and it worked great!

Next, I'd like to play with geoshells. The drawback to diffuse overlay is that you cannot apply a displacement map for it (to make it pop out a bit). The other drawback is that sometimes my dropdown arrow beside Diffuse Overlay Color would disappear entirely (the dropdown arrow which lets you pick an image). The color picker was still there on the row, just the arrow gone. Weird. The only way to get it back was to delete the suit and start over.
