How to fix the content library when you break it and how to make the morphs load?

Posting in new users because I don't use the software very often so I don't know anything about it.

Loaded Genesis 2 male, switched his UV's to M4, then tried to load M4 skins from the content library (made sure the figure was selected) and none of them would load. Why? What's the point of being able to change the maps if you can't apply the textures? Then I somehow broke the content library, and even if I close the tab and re-open it, it stays broken. I can no longer browse the libraries, I can only load things from the last folder that was opened, and when I push the arrow buttons out of frustration, it makes most of the content disappears from smart content too. Fortunately closing the program and re-opening it fixes this, but it doesn't fix the content library. Is there a way to reset it?

[deleted rant about software.]

Thanks.

Some more information would help us help you better.

    1. What version of Daz Studio are you running? (Go to Help/About Daz Studio and tell us the full version number that is displayed in the screen that pops up).
    2. Did you upgrade from a previous version of Daz Studio, or did you install this version as your first version?
    3. Are you running the old Valentina database, or are you running the PostgreSQL database?
    4. What operating system are you using, and is it a 32 or 64 bit operating system.
  • Version 4.8.0.59. Upgraded, I think I started with 4.6. Windows 7, 64 bit. I think it is the old database since the install manager says I haven't downloaded the new one.

I rarely use it because, obviously, I don't get along with it.

Thanks for following up with the requested information. Unfortunately, the old Valentina database had lots of issues and that is one reason that Daz switched to the PostgreSQL database. If your database has already been corrupted (which was a frequent occurrence with Valentina), your best bet is probably to export user data, reset the database and upgrade to DS 4.9 and the PostgreSQL database. You may need to reinstall your content after doing this. Both DIM and Daz Connect make content installation easy.

There have been many many improvements in Daz Studio 4.9 The latest beta 4.9.3.166 has been working reliably for me. Here is a thread about the beta, how to export user data, and info about the new CMS.

My mistake, sorry! Here is the link (for real this time).

  • Thanks. I'm currently backing up my library, which will take all day because it's 20gb. So I guess it will be tomorrow.

How do I reset the database?

Since I am primarily a Poser user, do I need to worry about this changing anything from a Poser standpoint?

  • Why does the install manager say that I have already installed 4.9 but the version that I have installed clearly says that it is 4.8?

  • How do I reset the database?

A physical backup never hurts, but there won't be too much risk of Daz messing up your data. The main risk lies in the database ("metadata") which is used for the smart content pane. This can be a critical issue when you customized lots of categories and (re)sorted some of the items there.

Resetting the database: Start DS, right click on the Content library pane and select the option "Content DB maintenance". There it'll show the option "reset database". If you made any custom changes (which I doubt) then I also suggest that you follow up on the hint by exporting your userdata as well. But if you're ok with simply using the defaults for now then you should be able to skip this option.

After you done that you can use the same option ("Content DB maintenance") and then use "Re-Import metadata...". This will restore all the data from all installed products as well as your user settings (optioanlly).

Personally I'd try upgrading first, and once that has been sorted out you can focus on the database. But your milage may vary, as is the saying (I've resetted the previous database (pre-PSQL) quite a few times myself as well).

Hope this can help a bit.

Why does the install manager say that I have already installed 4.9 but the version that I have installed clearly says that it is 4.8?

I don't use Poser, so I can't comment on what, if anything, you need to do there.

Click the gear on the DIM window and then click the Applications tab. See where you have told DIM to install DS 4.9 and/or any beta (Public Build) versions. Compare that to where your 4.8 version is installed. You can run a 4.8 release version and a beta (Public Build) version of 4.9 at the same time without problems. But you aren't supposed to try to install two release versions (4.8 and 4.9) at the same time.

  • It only lists one. Which the install manager says is 4.9, but the program itself says it is 4.8.

Did you verify that the application folder listed in that DIM display is the actual path that you are running DS 4.8 from?

Where do you see that DIM installed 4.9. Do you see "Daz Studio 4.9 (Win 64-bit)" on the Installed tab?

I guess you could uninstall and reinstall. Or you could try installing the 4.9 beta (Public Build), which wouldn't disturb your 4.8 version.

  • I don't use smart content, I like to be able to pick through the libraries myself, that's why it's so frustrating. Hopefully the upgrade still allows that?

After resetting the database and re-importing metadata, I now have a content library again, but not everything is in it that was in it before (for example none of the Genesis figures are there), and all of the smart content is gone. These things are all still in the library, they haven't been deleted from the actual folder, but they don't show up.

I'm on the verge of uninstalling and reinstalling the software and I may or may not do that before someone responds to this, I have some fear that it might create a whole new set of problems.

  • Ok, I have the Genesis figures back (still no smart content), which brings me back to the original question about textures. Can you not apply a texture from the content library? I try double clicking them, I try dragging them onto the figure, a dialog box pops up and disappears too quickly for me to read it and the textures don't go onto the figure.

You absolutely should be able to apply materials from the Content Library. I assume that you are applying a material that is appropriate for the model you are trying to apply it to. Matrerial files can't be arbitrarily applied to any old object. You can look in your log file to see if any errors are posted there. (Help/Troubleshooting/View Log File...) Scroll to the end of the log after you try applying a material that doesn't work, and see what the log says.

  • As I said in the original post, I am trying to apply M4 textures to Genesis 2 male after switching his UV's to M4. Although the textures were not originally made for him, I would assume that the whole point of the UV-swapping is to be able to use various textures on him.

The log file says "Script executed successfully," but I disagree.

  • As far as I remember M4 textures need to be in duf format to apply them to G2 in Studio

You can load them onto M4 or Genesis then save them as a material preset in duf format & then they should apply

  • Thanks, that worked!
