My Rules for Renaming Content that i collect

I have collected a lot of content over the past few years and I soon discovered that it is easy to lose something due to its original name. I finally found a free model of a pull out sofa bed after search forever, but I cannot find it in my older content library. To fix this I set up some rules for labeling so I can backup and find any content.
Part of this comes from one of my biggest frustrations with Daz Studio Content – the inconsistent and arbitrary naming of products. I wish Daz would come up with guidelines for content creators similar to mine.
I don't rename the original zip files since that name may be required for Daz Studio to install the content.
Renaming is especially helpful for free user created coned
After I download anything I put it in a new folder.
For anything related to Characters:
Figures (s) – Product Name ( & Any Related Content like Texture Sets) – Product Type
for example for FWSA Oscar HD for Lucian 7 after putting download content in a new folder, it was named G3M FWSA Oscar for Lucian 7.
Another example would be The On the Town Outfit for Genesis 3 Males has an additional texture set called Chillax. The download s for them are IM00035125-01_OntheTownforGenesis3Males.zip and IM00035223-01_Chillax.zip
So after I put both in a new folder I name it:
G3M On the Town Clothing & Chillax Textures.zip
if the product is for more than one character, I add each with the latest figures first. So if a product has poster for Genesis 2 Male and Genesis, the name would start with G2M G2 Don't forget the type (pose, clothing, expression, etc). I don't put character for that type of content.
For all other content its similarly named but without the character type prefix. If the content includes poses that is included. So for example. I have i13's Steakhouse and the pose collection for Genesis 3 Female ( but not the clothing set). I named it i13 Steakhouse & G3F Poses
Whatever the content the type is always include (lights, hair script, etc). Its is also a good ideal of include the vendor to differentiate similarly named content. I have a lot of stuff called bathroom)
Shaders will include Iray somewhere in the name where ever its in the official name or not. Scripts are given the Daz3D prefix.
Tutorials are similarly named with the first word being the software program used (Daz3d, Hexagon, Modo, Photoshop, etc.)
There is an amazing about of free 3D models on the internet (http://archive3d.net/ is an amazing site of free models that I usually got first) however they are usually named some unidentifiable name. So right after I download something its given the prefix 3D and named accordingly. Trust me, do this right away or you will never remember what you downloaded.
For example, this great model of an intercom (http://archive3d.net/?a=download&id=d2e3fdac) is called Station 3D model and the file download is 76c582a99a4614b14018e0c836f71c2f,zip.
Finally, the folders are compressed. If you find you have more than a couple folders to zip, do a google search for foldertomultiple.bat it's a handy little time saver.
Hope someone finds this helpful

(this is the first time I've done this type of posting , I hope it is clear.

Figure related stuff (Characters, Poses, clothing, etc.) is almost always going to be under People in the Content Library, under the specific figure generation and gender. The only thing that annoys me is the inconsistent placement of environments that characters can be placed in; sometimes they are under that main category, sometimes they are umder "Props". I don't use custom categories, though some folks do.
I would be unalbe to use Studio without the custom categories I create for each item. I know exactly where everything is and I don't have to move anything. Its the only way I can keep track of not only studio items but the items in the poser runtimes, the freebies and the items from other shops. Otherwise, I would spend more time looking for stuff than I do actually making stuff.
I totally agree. I have set up a system with custom categories and it has helped SO MUCH. I can now find exactly what I'm looking for and helps me know exactly how much of each type of item I have.
Setting up custom categories and getting your content organized can take some time, but once done it is HUGELY helpful and saves time in the long run.
okay I'm going to edit my original because i think you guys misunderstood what I'm trying to do.
all my fancy renaming is for when i put the items on a hard drive used to store all my downloaded content not for the content used by daz.
i like to keep all my content backed up and organized on a separate hard drive so in case something terrible happens to my daz installation i can reinstall and not lose any of my stuff. i also use it if i want to load at the original product for some reason
5200north, I do the same (roughly) but I keep the creator last in the name (usually in parens), as when I'm trying to group things, it's more by characteristic than creator. The creator is more of a confirmation for me.
Thanks for your advice, it's a big issue with me as well, so any tidbits that can help me keep it under control are welcomed!

The search box is usually what I use. Got frustrated trying to organize everything, but search brings up stuff I forgot I had.
Problem is that it only search on file names, not folder names, and in most cases you can only find a product by folder name.
True, but I rarely remember the name of the product anyway. I'm just looking for a snow shovel, for example, for a scene, I type in snow or shovel, and voila, there it is. From there you can go to the folder to find addon textures or morphs or whatever. I realize it may not work for everyone, but it has saved me a lot of frustration.
I just use the alphabetical product list and have been running all my stuff from other sites through the content package assistant.
The only problem is the odly named daz products where the name doesn't really describe the product. Then I tend to forget that I have it. The most recent example being when I saw the Dragon Mage and Master Product in the 7 days of Christmas and was like "hey, that would go good with a project I'm trying to put together." When I looked up the required product, it was Evilson... which I owned but didn't even know! And would have never thought to look under that product name for the outfit.
Usually I am able to go through the list here of products I purchased and find the name used in DS
