Do your pants glow?

No, I didn't think so. Mine don't. Cloth in general does not glow, and neither does metal. But Darius' Montana Outfit sure does. I suspect 3Delight/Poser materials were just converted with the Iray Uber shader and offered as "Iray materials". When 3Delight material has the Ambient setting turned on, that Ambient channel is converted to Emissive settings by the Iray Uber shader. I suspect this glowing gold jewelry is why Serene Night had such trouble with it over in the Darius 7 thread.
This is the third clothing product I've purchased in the Daz store that has this problem. I'll be submitting another help request about this. Emissive surfaces slow down rendering. We certainly don't need unnecessary emissive surfaces in our Iray scenes. And we don't need unnaturally glowing clothes, unless of course we are going for a sci-fi look or something.
I created a default primitive plane for the floor and back wall. I loaded the Montana Outfit. I have no lighting in this scene (no headlamp either). Tone Mapping is set to EV 5 to clearly show the problem.

Gasp! Your pants don't glow? How un-fashionable! Its all the rage these days, you know!
But yes, that is silly
What's really weird to me is that I'm a little puzzled by people using ambient on clothing in 3dl nowadays.
unless you have magic pants, just... noooo.
It used to be a lot of the characters have some setting that make their skin glow. It was not emmissive shader but something else. I forgot what it was called.
*jealous*
I want magic, glowy pants!
Oh, no, the add on materials package has the same problem. Another help request I'll need to write.
Will, I agree. I think we are essentially getting old Poser style materials propagated forward. We have seen very very few products with "real" Iray materials, in my opinion. At least judging by the products I purchase.
Travel to Montana?
More errors in the Montana stuff. I loaded the Montana shirt all by itself in a scene (not outfit, just shirt; not on G3M, just shirt by itself). None of the materials will apply - not the oriiginal material or any of the materials from the add on. I get this error in the log:
2016-12-22 17:38:03.998 Selected node(s) not a valid hierarchy
2016-12-22 17:38:03.998 Error reading file, see log for more details.
Evidently the materials won't apply to the Montana shirt, unless the shirt is on Genesis 3 Male. Forget autofitting to G2M or using the shirt by itself, I guess. Yet another help request to write.
Some modeling programs (I use Wings3D a lot) have a default shader that DS reads as emissive when I import things into from Wings. I think that might be what's happening. The vendor is importing a shader that DS sees as an emissive, giving it color and what not and not really checking the emissive part of the shader ;). Either way, it's the sort of thing that should get caught in testing.

I thought Montana was a very wierd name for that outfit.
My physics teacher told us said next time we go to a disco or bar with black lights to make sure to brush out teeth soon before going in or put Visine in our eyes just before going it because they have an ingredient to glows in black light.
Interesting. I don't really know how this emission error occurred, but I agree that it should never have made it into a released product. Over the last few months, I've reported 4 products with this issue. QA is evidently not checking for things like this at all. PAs and their beta testers are not catching it either.
Today alone, I've written 3 bug reports on the Montana Outfit and the add-on textures. The more I try to use it, the more ways it fails. I'm stuck with the Montana Outfit as part of the Darius bundle, but I will probably return the add-on if Daz doesn't fix the two bug reports I submitted on it today. Even though it didn't cost much, what kind of message am I sending if I keep stuff that doesn't work for me? I'd rather just apply shaders (like yours, parrotdolphin's, Khory's, and Mec4D's, etc.). I already did a render of this outfit with one of parrotdolphins hand dyed shaders on the shirt. It is in my gallery.
(Yes, I am a big complainer and a frequent bug report writer. Somebody's got to do it.
)
Duuuuude, you guys are so behind the times. Glowing pants are so last year. We've moved on to glowing cars, even glowing dogs, yo.
Well, at least he won't get hit by a car when he is out for a walk!
I found a pair of glowy pants at the resale shop. Guess they are so last year, lol. I don't normally turn off all the lights when I'm setting up a scene so haven't even thought about this issue. Barbult, thanks for bringing it to the forefront. I will definitely keep my eye on products I buy or make. I thought that I had to add an emmisive shader to make stuff glow. Didn't know that the ambience would do that too in Iray. I believe it affects 3Delight as a glow but I'm surprised by Iray being affected.
The necklace and watch were the obvious glowing objects, even in a normally lit scene. Then I investigated the rest of the package and found all the glowing cloth and metal accents. The dark scene render was just an easy way to demonstrate the extent of the issue (how much of the product had the emission turned on, and how much each one glowed comparatively). The Iray Uber shader has emission settings. You don't have to explicitly apply a separate emission shader to turn on emission. All you have to do really is set the emission color to something other than black in the Iray Uber shader. I'm happy that you will watch out for that in your products. Thanks. Spread the word to your PA friends.
Three Mile Island is in Middletown, Pennsylvania. I'm born and bred and stayed thru the whole thing ;). I might glow....o.O

Was it nerve wracking to be there at that time, or were you too young to know?
I was in the 9th grade (13 yrs old). Wasn't really nervewracking...was sort of interesting in a way. I'd never seen two lanes of a road and cars moving the same direction in both lanes or all 4 lanes of a highway all moving in the same direction before or since ;). Most of the time we just stood outside and talked to the neighbors who also stayed. Was a very odd smell in the air that morning though...a sort of burning chemical smell (probably the reactor melting down. They told us it didn't at the time and we didn't find out until years later that it actually HAD partially melted down). And we were three miles away from the installation, as the crow flies. We got out of school for a few days and any kid appreciates that, no matter the reason...lol.

I was old enough to know...close enough to be in danger...and young enough to go, "Maybe afterward, I'll get bitten by a spider!!!"...
I was just at the edge of the area that would have to have been evacuated.
And no, my pants don't glow...and if they did, then I'd ask for a refund. It makes it too hard to sleep when your dresser looks like it's possessed.
Methinks it's a reference to Tony Montana, played by Al Pacino in "Scarface."
"4 lanes of a highway all moving in the same direction". I live in Florida. That is what we see for every hurricane evacuation.
Well, I'm glad nothing bad happened to you, or to mjc1016.
I admit, lately I've felt the standards are slipping. More often than not I must file more bug reports. To their credit they usually correct the issues, but this outfit materials look awful to me. This plus Darius's permanet musache seems like a poor decision.
I have 73 open bug reports. The oldest is 1 year old. I should return more stuff if it isn't fixed in 30 days. Waiting longer than that seldom yields results, it seems.
Hi, I missed your post when going through the thread. Yes, I have never been accused of being fashoinable.
On a more positive note, I just picked up Painter's Lights. They are as great as everyone has said! I'm rendering a "Rembrandt" right now. We recently toured the Rembrandt house and the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
There's also an Iray fabric shader pack (no names mentioned) that adds a very low emissive to all its shaders. You can just turn it off, but it's quite annoying.
Oh no, I wonder if I have that and haven't noticed. I have several fabric shader packs. Why not say which one it is? Have you bug reported it? Let's get these things fixed. Like you say, it is annoying to have to turn it off every time.
I don't consider it a "bug" as such because I think it was probably intentional by the PA, for whatever his/her reason. So I'm not about to label the pack as faulty. It's like when you get clothing that has massive glossy and specular when it clearly doesn't need it.
Unless it's labeled Fantasy, then I'd consider it faulty...Iray is a PBR renderer...Physics...as in real world physics is what makes it tick. Materials that are divorced from reality have no place being sold as Iray materials, unless they are labeled as 'non-real'/'fantasy' or something.
