HDRI... Where do I put the camera?
in The Commons
I'm a newbie and recently discovered the beauty of using HDRI to light my renders. I really like how realistic and *cough* simple the lighting is. However, I'm having trouble positioning my camera so the image doesn't appear distorted.
Any tips out there?
Thanks!

What do you mean by distorted? Can you post an example?
Also are you talking about the models in the scene, as in the render of the models look distorted? Or are you just talking about the HDRI image in the background?
It depends on how the HDRI was made I think. I don't know enough about the creation of these to know why some work perfectly and others are all warped towards the bottom but I've defintely gotten some freebie ones that do that. Sometimes you can play with the settings in the Render Settings / Environment tab to change the dome to finite with ground, or maybe infinite without ground or maybe... well experiment. It might still be distorted but then you try messing with the scale tool (if it's set to finite sphere) and see if that makes it better. Trial and error. Wish I knew a "works ever time" fix for this.
Typically a 4K HDRI image can't really be used on a 4K iRay render. Choose a 720p or 1020p size for your iRay render to get rid of blurriness.
Also, set the ground to manual and the Dome to Infinite Sphere is the easiest way to avoid HRDI distortion (or maybe it was Infinite with Ground). If you render is a weird green tone then avoid Finite or Finite with Ground.
That's because there isn't one.
You are right, a lot of how it looks is very dependent on how it was shot/set up to begin with and isn't really changeable, other than scaling/moving (usually the floor) things around. Also resolution plays a role...over 8k (on the long side) images tend to be better 'all encompassing' backdrops/lights. Those in the 4-8k range often have enough resolution for 'backdrops' but not enough for being used as a 'floor' too...and under...it's best to use them for either pure 'sky' and not get any details or lighting only.
