A few questions about Posing, Materials, etc
Hello everyone! I have had Daz Studio for quite some time now and have as or the last three or so months decided to really put some time into figuring it out. I was a main poser user (Still like that program), but I am really starting to enjoy Daz Studio as well. I have a few questions.
There are tons of options for how to save things in studio... I am having troubles saving things and managing my saves.
1/ If I want to save a pose with no expressions what would I choose?
2/ Expression only, what would I choose?
3/ And Character with hair and clothing what would I choose?
4/ If I make a mistake how do I delete it so that it does not show up in my 'saved' area?
I like to add my own textures to shirts, etc - I can easily do this in Poser but am struggling here with it. How do I specifically do that in Studio?
And lastly, I have several character base models I have purchased (Gen2 male and fem/ Gen3 male and fem/V6, V7, M7 with expressions, head morphs and body morphs) Am I supposed to have genitals with the base models? The Gen 4 and older versions always had them included. I dont see any of them. Am I looking in the wrong place? Should I have purchased the 'pro' version somewhere along the line?

When you save a pose there are a bunch of boxes you can uncheck. If you go to pose controls/head you will see that expressions are there. To not save them uncheck and if you want to save just them uncheck everything else.
For a full character save a scene subset.
In the content library there is a plus and a minus sign. To delete the file hit the minus sign.
Adding textures is done in the surface tab and then the edit tab. You would want to look at the surface settings and then put the texture in the correct places. Like a base for the base texture and so on.
I'll be honest and admit I don't remember what the gens came with.
Answers, one at a time.
1. Save>Pose Preset
Make sure to have the item you want to save selected in the Scene tab.
a windows explorer will come up and you can choose where to save the preset as well as name it.
Default is C:\Users\[name]\Documents\DAZ 3D\Studio\My Library\Presets\Poses.
once you name the file and click Save, a pop-up will come up.
Under the Properties, there will be the name of the selected item with a set of side arrows just like in the scene tab.
For most human characters, and depending on which "expression" you may be using, you'll need to expand each till you hit the "pose control" in the head.
Untick the expression check box and click accept.
Note:not all expressions, are under pose controls, nor are all expression defined by "expression" dials. Certain expressions may actually be defined by other dials in the head, check what changes by applying the particular expression, and selecting "currently used" under the Parameters tab. i don't use shaping or posing as their a bit redundant to the parameters tab.
2. Save>Pose Preset
In this case, click the first check box, next to it's name, then move down the same chain back to the head to select the "expression" again.
Same note applies with regards to where stuff might be.
3.Scene subset.
4. select the item to delete,it'll have a yellow box on it, right click, select delete, a pop-up will come up to confirm.
Be aware that deleting this way does not send the item to the recycle bin in windows, it is a permanent delete.
I recommend selecting "browse to file location" and deleting through explorer as it does go to the recycle bin.
Keeps the "aww bleep" to a minimum that way.
Textures.
Surfaces tab.
Where the textures go depends on shader settings.
Colored maps, generally, go in the box next to
"Diffuse color" in 3delight
"Base color" in Iray.
This excludes SSS maps and a few other color maps.
Bump and displacements, gray scale usually, go in
Bump strength and Displacement strength in 3delight.
Base Bump and Displacement strength respectively in iray.
Bump and displacements can be used fairly interchangeably, and using both channels can improve render quality.
The rest of the channels that you may use will depend on what look you are going for.
The genitalia appears to only come in the pro sets, just scanning through the included content in the base characters, v6, v7 etc, and the starter and pro bundles.
A quick note about genital textures, not all characters have them.
Be sure to read the write up on the character and if they don't specifically say they have them, assume they don't.
I have a monster number of genesis, 1,2,3 characters that don't have any.
Because of this i actually use products from other sites for anatomical elements.
Also that's the term you'll want to use in the search engine on the site to find characters that specifically have the requisite textures.
Anatomical elements
Thank you for your response. :)
Thanks for your response. Very helpful, and I really appreciate the time you spent typing all that up for me.
