Sure ... under Render > Render Settings ... select the appropriate options and render away.

.jpg = if you want the background colour to show

.png = if you want the background to be transparent

Alternatively, under the File menu you have "Save Last Render" which does exactly what it says on the tin and gives you a few more options. Note that you can't select this option if you haven't done any renders yet.

(FWIW, most people use the option in Render Settings to create really big renders. If you push the render size too high, your computer can run out of memory and might crash. Using the direct save option in Render Settings gets around this limitation.)
