Help in need of free lighting

Can anyone help me?

I need a FREE light set for 3Delight that mimics a soft pretty fireplace glow.

All the lighting I have tried ends me up with a very dull lackluster render.

    Have you tried point lights?

The image below uses several point lights that cover the places I wanted lit.

EDIT: Or are you referring to the actual coals/logs that are to glow?

  • No, I have not. Pretty new to DS been a Poser user since 2009, G3F/G3M prodded me to learn DS

  • One thing to remember in Iray is that lights are only half the story for creating a great looking render.

The render settings are just as if not more important than the actual lighting itself.

Just imagine taking a film type and SLR camera setup for a bright sunny day into a dimly lit room and taking photos. Your not likely to take any decent pictures, unless you account for the differences in the light intensity and adjust your camera setup to suit. It's the same with Iray renders in DS.

The good news is that in Daz Studio you don't need a bag full of expensive camera equipment, you just need to tweak the Render settings to your lighting and have a bit of background knowledge as to how the settings are likely to effect your renders based on the lighting, the default render settings are tuned somewhat to an outdoor daytime scene. Taking these settings into a room with firelight are not likely going to give you the results you would be happy with.

The main settings you should look at are Tone Mapping and FIltering both in the Render Settings Tab

Rather than reinvent the wheel, here are a few links that may help. For a firelit scene the settings that would help would be Fstop, Shutter speed and the film ISO.

Official Daz 3D Documentation here - Tone Mapping Documentation Center

From the amazing SickleYield - [Tutorial] Lighting and Tone Mapping In Iray

You may also like to look at adding some Bloom in the filtering section of the Render Settings. Which adds a nice soft glow to your lighting and highlights and should suit a fire side scene well. I found this page gave myself a good introduction annd overview of a lot of the Iray render engine features. And is well worth a look if your trying to get your head around Iray.

    Daz Studio 4.8 Introduction

    Hope this helps :)

  • Thanks for the info, this render is driving me mad.

Broke down and bought a light set (http://www.daz3d.com/caressed-by-color)

and I am at less than 50% on a 600x480 test render using a scipt I found that has render settings on the "draft quality".

I am about to just realize my poor laptop cannot do what I am asking of it with this render...

  • My apologise I mistakingly thought you were looking at an Iray render.

    Apologies for the misinformation.

That will teach me to make comment before my morning coffee.

All the best with the render.

  • It is ok I wish I could render Iray the renders I have seen are gorgeous. My poor laptop doesn't even seem to like 3Delight...

Spookie- I haven't used 3DL very often lately- but go up to Create and select a Point light- then put it inside the fireplace flames and in Parameters, select the light and make it a light blue. (Yep, light blue, bright)  Put that one at the base of the flame. Create another point light position it directly above the blue one, and make that orange. Do a third one above that, and make it yellow. Overlap the lighting, and you'll get some neat flame lights that will also throw that nice glow you asked for.  wink

You can make surface emit light in 3DL by using Omnifreakers UberAreaLight which is included free in DS it’s installed along with the included content in My DAZ 3d Lirary/Light Presets/omnifreaker. The one you want is !UberAreaLight Base, you apply this as a shader in the surfaces tab and by holding down ‘CTRL’ (CMD on a MAC?) you can leave the original surface maps in place and add the light controls to the surface. By default the ambient settings are turned off which you will probably want to turn on again, then adjust the settings in the Light options.

The screen grabs below shows the light settings of the flames, the location of the files and the final image to give you an idea. The only light in the picture are the flames in the campfire prop. This can be rather system intensive on less powerful systems but it might get the effect you want and it’s free.

  • I am thinking with my poor laptop I need to reduce my render dimensions and take items out of the scene before I try again...

Thanks for all the pointers, one of them HAS to work LOL

What are the specs of your laptop? My computer is pretty old, but I don't usually have any trouble rendering scenes.

Part of getting a nice glow effect in 3Delight is using Gamma 2.2 and Gamma Correction.

By default 3Delight is set to render at Gamma 1.0.  You really should be using Gamma 2.2 with Gamma correction turned on.  This will make the light behave more like real light in terms of fall off and make your images look more realistic.  The problem is that almost all the material on products in the store has been adjusted to work at gamma 1.0.  If you turn on gamma correction it will mostly work but there will be some issues. I had to turn down the specular strength on some clothing and hair. Also some of the transparancy maps on hair and other products are not set correctly, but I don't remmeber the details anymore.  Been a long time since I used 3Delight.
