No way to save character or scene in Studio?

Yup, newbie user can't find the save dialog in Studio.

I've looked in the obvious places and scrolled through the various menus and can't find this very basic feature. A Google search found these Daz instructions which say to

  1. Create your character and adjust as needed.

  2. Select the figure in the Scene tab.

  3. Choose File > Save As > Character Preset from the menu.

Okay.. great. Except that the File menu option doesn't exist in Studio 4.6. Yes, I have customized the character and selected it in the scene tab. But the only option in the File menu is Exit. What did I miss?

I don't know what to make of Studio yet. I want to like it. It has a good feature set and could save me a lot of time storyboarding and making short animations before doing a final run in 3DS/Maya/Blender, etc. But  I keep running into silly obstacles such as not being able to save a scene. And don't get me started on how often it crashes. The latter spunds like it is Studio & Intel Graphics not playing nice. But it's still  unimpressive when all of the other high performance software I use (Photoshop, Lightroom, Maya, etc) is all rock stable with Intel and just about any other name brand graphics one cares to use.

Maybe it's all user error - that would actually be great news as I am sure that I will like Studio if I can figure out where some of these basic features are hidden and get rid of the constant crashing. Any assistance appreciated & if this is user error perhaps this thread will help some other new users from making the same errors.

Cheers

select character in scene tab                      file--> save as -->

If you don't see entries in the menu I would try changing the layout so that it resets the program's interface: go to Window > Workspace > Select layout and apply one of the layouts (I use City Limits personally)

As a side-note to this; if you've installed a pristine copy of DAZ|Studio and haven't changed the default layout, what you get is a "training wheels" setup that deliberately hides many functions. It also has tabs set up similar to the Poser "room" layout, which many people find difficult to wrap their heads around. Try one of the other layouts and see if one of them is more you-friendly.

  • You're thinking of an older default. It has since changed to the City Limits Lite layout.

  • Thank you for the generous help. The problem was that a lot of key functionality was hidden in the default layout.

The default was "Holywood Blvd" which apparently hides a lot of features - that layout simply does not show the save as dialog, have the content menu buttons or even point towards a configuration or settings menu. Good advice from all & in particular, Leana straightened me out (thanks Leana) by pointing out that I should try a different layout. Once I did that, all of the features that I was hunting for are now populated in the menus.
