Graphics Card - Render Times Crazy - Halp!

Hello all!

I'm not very computer savy when it comes to the nitty gritty.  Long story short my current graphics card is a Intel Iris Graphics 6100 (which is killing me).  Mac makes it extremely expensive to upgrade so I am going the PC route.

Literally all i'm looking for is a render machine.  The most simple guts that can run the maximum speed of the graphics card comprabal to the Titan X.  Can anyone suggest an affortable PC where I can switch out the graphics card to a more beefy one?

Thanks!

You need to give people more to go on, like what your budget is, what's "affordable" to you.

To support a Titan X, those "simple guts" need to include a nice, big power supply. 600W should do nicely.

  • @nDelphi I am looking at spending around 1500 for the entire machine.  I realize that the graphics cards is more then half the price.  I was wondering if I could get away with at least an i5 processor with 8gigs of ram to allow the Titan or something similar to run at peak efficiency.  I just don't know much about this world with what will work and what will be best.

I would not recomend getting a box with just 8GB of RAM, you really need at least 16, and ideally 32GB. No point having a GPU with 12GB if the CPU has less than that, as it is likely the graphics card will not be driven at full efficency during rendering. You would be better off specing out a machine with the min you need in the main PC (decent processor with at least 4 cores, plus 16GB of RAM), and then seeing what GPU you can afford with the money left

16MB is minimum really, and not ideal by any stretch

a top line i5 will cope well enough with one good graphics card, but again a decent i7 would be better.

Don't overclock the CPU, unless you don't mind it wearing out sooner. I have an overclock profile saved in my BIOS, which I never use.

Sure you could, but if you do go that route spend enough on the Motherboard so adding RAM doesn't necessairy waste what you have; upgrading the CPU later is an option, but a waste really. And get a PSU with enough spare capacity. And get a good one; cheap PSUs are a long, long way from cheap.

  • Thanks everyone!  It is definitly a world that I don't know too well.  Luckily i'm surrounded by many intelligent people :).
