Geometry Editor - How do you deselect a stray selection?

This has been driving me absolutely crazy!

I'm trying to create a new material zone, and even though I am careful, I find a stray area that had been selected.  I don't know how long ago it was selected, and when I try to deselect that one small area, then the whole thing deselects.

There has go to be a way to do this besides just Undo.  Unfortunately I can't find any comprehensive documentation on Geometry Editor that tells me what each menu item does.

    What I've done in situations like this is just go ahead and assign everything to the new surface. Then I deselect everything and then select the 'strays' and reassign them to the original surface.  Probably not the most elegant way of doing it, but instead of starting over several times, it's much faster.

  • There really should be a 'deselect' option - in other programs you can just 'select' it again to deselect, or use 'shift-select' or right-click or something.

    This has driven me crazy before too - sometimes, on a tricky surface, I'll need to select and assign a few at a time to be sure.

  • Press/Hold the [Alt] key while clicking/painting to deselect geometric elements. Press/Hold the [Ctrl] key while clicking/painting to add geometric elements to a selection.

    I find the alt-select to be as fiddly as selecting them in the first place...

    I was using the geometry editor for the first time in ages today and was wondering this. It's weird how often this forum seems to know I've got a question and randomly answers it without me having to ask it!

    In the meantime, look in the lower half of Window>Workspace>Customise fpr the various tool viewport accelerators.

    I didn't find it so hard to use.  When I made a mistake, I took my finger off the CTRL key and pressed the ALT key, then clicked on each errantly-selected face and they deselected.  Back to the CTRL key and I continued my selections.

    It went very fast even though the geometry for the dress was pretty high res.  I was able to create the new collar material zone for the Eowyn dress in one session.
