Old West Architectural Construction Kit at RDNA - Does is work in DS?

I'm looking for anyone here who might own this set and it's expansions.  They are in the RDNA Blowout sale and I'd be interested in getting them if they work in DS.  Anyone have these?  Do they work in DS?  In Carrara, maybe?  Any input would be appreciated.

    I've got it - seems to work just fine in DS, as do the expansions (I only have some of those).  Can't comment on Carrara seeing as I don't have that program.

  • I haven't used it for a while, as I recall (in an older version of DS) it did work but some of the parented eleemnts in assemblies needed to be repositioned. Of course the materials would probably need reworking to meet current expectations.

  • Thanks, guys!  That helps!  I'm always looking to expand my Old West stuff and this looks like a really good investment.

    I did some testing of the set some months ago, everything seemed to work fine. Here's a 3DL render I made back then:

    I hate to say this, but I am having a problem with this product today. Every time I load a building, it loads fine, but if I add a light (or sometimes just click it in the Scene tab), DS crashes immediately with the following error:

    DAZStudio.exe caused ACCESS_VIOLATION in module "C:\Program Files\DAZ 3D\DAZStudio4\DzCore.dll" at 0033:00000000xxxxxxxx, DzMaterial::getUVSetControl()

    the "xxxxxxxx" part is different each time.

    I've tried it with Iray (renders fine as long as you don't add a light), 3Delight (both default lights and AoA), even OpenGL. If I add a light first, then add a building, it seems to be okay. I'm running DS 4.9.2.70 on Windows 7 64-bit, 32G of RAM, Nvidia GTX 980. I don't remember this happening before, but it's been a while since I used the set. I noticed the dates on the files are back in 2004, so there may something that doesn't agree with the current version of DS.

  • Hmm, no idea how to read those types of messages.  Does the same thing happen if you use an HDR type of lighting?  Is this only caused with physical lights like spotlights and distant lights?

    I've had it for a while, but not used it for anything yet. It's old enough that the geometry ought to give you no problem, and the textures may be a bit low-res.

    Actually what slowed me down with it is that I don't recall there being anything like presets for it, so you have to build the whole scene from scratch and there are no shortcuts.

    I've done some more investigating and I don't think it's the lights after all. It happens when I load a preset building such as the house. The house, for example, consists of a group-like node called "!house" with a sub-node called HouseControl, which is the parent of the floor, which is the parent of all the rest of the house. When the house is loaded, it is not selected in the Scene tab. As soon as I select it (or any of the child nodes), BAM! DS crashes. If I use the individual props to build the building instead of loading the preset, no crash. It's a little tedious that way, but at least I can still use it.

    Please bug-report this. Repeatable crashes should always be reported (DS should at least be able to cope more gracefully).

    Hm, can't reproduce that (DS 4.9.2.70 x64). I'm using the City Limits workspace though, can it have anything to do with that?

    I'm also using City Limits.

    Eureka! I found the reason for the crashes. It's the plugin UV Tailor that's causing the problem. If I disable it, no crash. I guess it was trying to find a UV for the "!house" or HouseControl node and of course they don't have one. I will submit a bug report on this.

    Have you changed the color scheme then? You screen shot does not look like mine (it's dark grey).

    Well that I can reproduce. After installing UV Tailor it also crashes for me. Thanks, good to know, it can be hard to track down such bugs with hundreds of items in your library.
