Poseidon Station

And once again, KindredArts comes up with something great. Poseidon Station is what I would imagine a future space habitat or ship interior would look like - clean, just enough room to move freely without feeling claustrophobic...

I am tired of seeing futuristic spacial interiors with high, vaulted ceilings and corridors that you could drive a truck through. I imagine future designers would say, "You want to do what!!!" as they look at those plans. "We need that space for more environmental or weapons!

Construction for space would probably be like the interior of a submarine, with no wasted volume. KindredArts has created an environment that just makes sense. The corridors are wide enough for two people to be comfortable, the living quarters have just enough room to avoid claustrophobia, and the lighting is muted and, again, sensible. Plus, it's clean, which is important for morale in a long-term confined occupation facility.

Finally, a spaceship interior that looks like something normal humans would build. In the cart it goes!

I agree, it does seem to be a bit more realistic for future space travel - at least the more near future. Space will definitely be at a premium. At least until we come up with alternate fuel or energy sources that require less space and weight.

I really must pay more attention to products in the store - I didn't even see Poseidon Station and as I'm a bit of a fan of KindredArts, I'm kicking myself. LOL. Consoling myself that I did nab two products in the sale tho.....so I'll wishlist this one for later on. It's a brilliant looking product.

My reaction was totally the opposite. It's insanely impractical, with no concept of mass budget. I saw that thing and said:

    1. Who puts 500 pound chairs in a space station?
    2. Not the cliche itty bitty sleeping cubbyholes, again. Not even a privacy curtain.
    3. What is with that massive round table? King Arthur runs this station?
    4. Is everyone on the same shift? People in the day room disturbing the sleepers.
    5. Overhead displays? Always overhead displays.
    6. A billion nooks, crannies, and gratuitous details on the corridor walls and ceiling that are impossible to keep clean. A cliche from the "build one corridore segment and vac-form 100 copies" school of
    7. Massive window, and a room arrangement that doesn't let anyone get a decent view of it.

It's straight out of 1979's 'Alien' - it might as well be called the Nostromo (the cleaner parts of the Nostromo, anyway...) .  And that's a good thing to me - I love that style of future design.  Well done!

Well, for what it's worth, if you want a smooth, easily cleaned corridor, primitives are easy.

I picked it up. I was excited to read sections were hideable.

Space is cheap: balloons and bubbles. Mass is expensive. You could add an entire inflatable room to a space station for what those insane chairs and table needed. This isn't sci-fi, this is stuff that's happening right now. The ISS added one of Bigalow's inflatable modules (a commercialization of NASA's own "TransHab" project) back in May.

That's a little one. Bigelow has an 11,000 cubic foot inflatable, and plans to build a provate space station using 9 of them, about 4x the pressurized volume of the ISS.

Hey guys! Thanks for dropping in, i hope you're all enjoying it. Petercat - People are going to start thinking you're on the payroll for all these lovely threads :)

As for the practicality aspect which has been brought up here - i'll be honest, that really wasn't something i considered during the design of this set. My greater concern was to deviate away from the more modern sci fi designs on the store. Stonemason, polish, dzfire and many others have nailed some really great modern designs, and i really just wanted to offer something different, a more retro vision. It's a homage to 1970/80's sci fi set design, and hopefully it makes sense in that respect. If enough people enjoy the set, i will extent poseidon to include other areas - such as a bridge, engineering section and mess hall. I'm very grateful for the input though, thanks guys!

I agree that it doesn't look all that practical but the description says it is done in a retro style. I like the look of it.

It doesn't look the same but the style reminds me of when I first saw Star Trek Next Generation. Compared to the original Enterprise I thought it looked more like a flying hotel.

  • I like it and it jumped into my cart straight away!  It is nice to have some variety.  :)

For the record, I have no relationship with kindredArts except what anyone can see online. I'm not even a beta tester. If I was, I would not comment about his/her products here.

    My two cents below:

    1) Lightweight materials/ extra storage/ lots of padding
    2) less room to be thrown around in case of vector change/loss of artificial geavity, retracting privacy screens/curtains/sound proofing
    3) Multi-purpose, again padded edges
    4) Same as military barracks, everyone in the same room is on the same shift. Easy. it's a four man room.
    5) Today's wall mounted TVs and dispays, space constraints
    6) Mass production, space constraints, storage wherever it can be squeezed in. Today's RVs.
    7) I've got nothing. Here's where I would add a small table and a couple of chairs.

Inflatable bubbles are fine if you are certain that you will never have a vector change, or want to move to another orbit. There would probably be problems with using artificial gravity with a flexible structure as well. I doubt if anyone would want to live in one, though. Solid walls do have a comfort factor of their own. And while space may be cheap, enclosing that space gets pretty darned expensive. I would expect that design engineers would want to utilize any space as efficiently as possible.

And once again, even with today's materials, size does not mean mass.

Yeah, if you go on a sailing ship of some kind, EVERYTHING is storage. So a 'big useless chair' probably has storage compartments, and the walls probably have all sorts of modular equipment.

You want to be able to just pull out panels and work on stuff rather than having to cut through walls if something goes wrong.

I'd be bouncing off the walls in that thing if there were zero gravity. Ach, into the wishlist with you.

Yes add bridge, engineering and mess hall. Just don't expect me to clean up the mess in zero gravity.

Thanks for this, KindredArts! I love this set! To me it looks different than what's already available. Your set presents a mood of it's own that seems to beg for a horror story or an epic adventure.  I think it looks professional and as realistic as a space ship can look, and I was happy to pop this into my cart.  -Cathy

p.s. (Also, sorry if this is off topic, but hadn't heard of such a thing and felt I HAD to address the inflatable room - OMG! I can't believe they stuck that on the side of the ISS right out there in space! Not very pretty or elegant, but I suppose it could make a great horror story all on it's own...)

If not for this thread, I would have completely missed this product. It looks brilliant. Thanks for the heads-up.

    Purchased.

Edit: Oh. And I would totally buy anything else in the series: bridge, engineering, mess hall!

I put this in my wishlist. I really love it and I don't even DO scifi stuff (tho I guess I'll have to start). LOL.

Great article. Maybe someday we'll have enough facilities in orbit to manufacture what is needed, so we can avoid the gravity well supply problem.

One other thing, that might be important: I've done a couple of test renders, and it's quick. I would guess that it's resource light, but don't know how to actually measure.

Have been waiting very eagerly for this set, ever since the previews!

For those interested, this is a test render using nothing but the lighting from the various emissive surfaces it includes. It really does give just the right combination of atmospheric moodiness and illumination. Definitely a vote for further continuations of this new series. :)

Hey, thanks for everyone dropping in! I can't respond to all of you but your comments are appreciated.  Also, a fair few of you want to see more from the series, and i'm more than happy to oblige, so watch this space.

@Petercat - The set is very light, relying mostly on normal/bump maps for fake depth as opposed to being poly-heavy like some of my other sets. When starting the project, i thought most people would want to render in low lighting so i tried to make it quite lightweight. Also, a majority of the lights are embedded single poly emitters which converge faster than complex emitters. This was all done in good faith for the end-user and hopefully pays off in render time.

Just had to get this!  With minor monkeying with textures and shaders (just to re-jig the lights and displays):

Should add, this is the 3DL variant!

is that 3dl? That came out really well.

Yup, pure 3DL - only postwork was to put some clothes on the girl .. ;)

All I did was convert a couple of surfaces to UberArea Light, use geometry editor to 'cut out' the surfaces that are emitting in red, so I could make them do that, and an alterered material for the panels.

Same here. I did not see this item at all. The sales are usually pretty clear to me, but for me thsi sale has been a little confusing or overwhelming really. This Station should have come out during a scifi heavy rollout, not horror.

I'll be getting this, despite the fact it can't be used to build an actual, working spacecraft. I like the clean lines, and the Nostromo-esque feel. Other sections would be great, and maybe an "aged" version, like the Marcoor series.

Keep in mind that the kind of curved angles and outlines this set has, make it perfect for playing unsettling games with lighting and shadows. It's something the recent game, 'Alien Isolation', did very well with similar environmental design. One of the first things I thought of when I saw the previews was the kind of image shown at fifteen seconds into this:

Just need these kind of air ducts in Iray for characters to crawl through... :)
