Sale items not for DAZ?

There are some sale items today which say Poser only, like the toon glade or the Law Gavel, which have obj. Why don't these work in DAZ?

Good question. I was looking at the Ninja Pixie things and was wondering why they wouldn't work in Daz.

Seems to be that they have poser custom material presets - probably means they use poser's materials room and don't have studio mats.  They'd probably work but might need you to manually apply the texture/bump maps and/or fiddle with the surfaces settings to get them to look ok.

If they have the .obj file, texture maps and bump maps, you can get them to work in studio - it's just a question of whether they'll look as nice.

Can always try, and return if they don't work with the 30-day money back guarantee.

Edit: might be an issue with some products if they are rigged to use poser's weight-map system.  Perhaps someone else can explain more on that.

I noticed that a LOT of the RuntimeDNA products are listed as Poser without listing Daz. I think many of them would probably work fine in Daz. Like this item, I just installed it and it works fine in Daz.

  • Also, some are Poser dynamic clothing which will just be a static prop in Daz Studio - unless you rig it yourself.

Every "Poser-only" item I have ever bought either here or on Rendo has worked just fine in DAZ.

If you're going to use it in Iray it has to be resurfaced, just like any other items that do not come with Iray pre-configured. But that's usually not a big deal. I've used Dreamland's Movie City Sets extensively, which are "Poser Only" and they convert to Iray well enough.

Okay, I'll give it a try. There are no clothing things in the items I'm interested, so no rigging ...

I think its the weightmapping - Poser has different weightmapping to DS.

If anybody gets the Toon Glade today and it works in 3DL without modification, I'd love to know.

The Pixies work fine in DS - here's a render straight out of the box, using Cookie&Chip poses. But the wings and stuff works fine, jointwise.

EDIT: The Gaffel works fine. The Magic Ball has a missing file (reporting this to CS at the moment), so I had to replace the surfacd with Iray glass shader, but the rest of the image below is straight out of the box with no changes to surfaces, etc.

@BeeMKay Thank you! :D  It's great to know they work in Daz! I love the renders by the way. The pixies are so adorable!

Toon Glade loads fine, with textures, and renders in 3Delight.

Geometry almost invariably works. Texture files usually work, although the bump and spec may need tweaking. Poser procedural shaders do not work.

Rigging is iffy. Most things work all right, but Poser weightmapping is incompatible with Studio. However, a lot of the stuff from RDNA is original figures which don't appear to use weightmapping, so they should be all right. It's the Smith-Micro figures that one needs to watch out for the most, but those aren't likely to turn up in this store, regardless.

Morphs and characters for their bases might. Mostly the older bases from before weightmapping -- but the bases aren't likely to make an appearance here since most of them ship with the Poser program.

There are a few things from RDNA which have rigging that doesn't work, and a lot of things that use Poser procedural shaders. The later can take Studio shaders and be fine.

And of course there is the Poser dynamic system which is a dead loss in Studio. There is a script out which is supposed to make Poser dynamic work with Studio dynamics. We really need better flagging on which new products which are Poser dynamic. But generally, if the draping looks too good to be true, it probably is Poser dynamic.

Note that Poser has only used weightmapping for the last couple of versions; I think maybe the last two or three years? Anything made before that will use the previous Poser method of rigging, which D|S does understand and can convert into its own native system with a pretty good likelihood of success. Look carefully at the store page/readme and the product creation date, if they're available, this will give you important clues as to whether weightmapping is used.

I think it came in with Poser 9. Possibly Poser 10. So if an item claims that it's for Poser 6 and up, it's probably fine. It's not in Poser 8.

Weightmapping was indeed added in Poser 9.
In Poser 8 they had also introduced an extension to parametric rigging, called something like "joint capsules", which isn't compatible with DS either.
