Render Farms

Has anybody here experimented with building a render farm or done any performance tests on how many CPUs were needed before any noticable speed was accomplished.  I guess this is even more pertinent to those doing animation, but I'm very curious.

You'll need render farm when you're going to make 4k content, but if you gonna make 4k content then render farm will not be the most costly thing... by far... :) If you're solo doing HD or FullHD content all you need are two PCs with two GeForce780 (or better) each. And right organization of your time :) You couldn't produce animations and scenes faster than these two PCs will render them :)

Wow,  things have much improved since the old days of Lightwave 9.6!   I need to start doing my research.

  • not with iray i haven't but I have ran one on UNREAL's game engine system used 8 m6000 quadro 24gb cards and twin xeon E5- 2699v3 18 core processors, an all quad enviroment, atmosphere, water and particle effects for the waterfalls with a single character roughly took about 2-3 minutes faster on simpler scenes. however unless your prepared to put out atleast 5-6 figures on it and using it for a profession and not just still images or simple animation not worth using for iray . this was give to me for birthday from father in law and it eats way too much power to use on simple scenes that aren't being made for profit so i rarely turn thing on
