Just replaced my 780 gtx with a 970... What should I expect in terms of performance difference?

I've had my 780 for 33 months. Why do I know it down to the month? Well, it crapped out and I had 3 months left on a three year warranty. I sent in an RMA request and they accepted it, but they're sending me a 970 in replacement of my 780.

I'm pretty happy in terms of gaming, etc but I did note that it has around 600-700 less CUDA cores than the 780 (16xx vs 23xx), but I've also read that they significantly improved the core efficiency.

Anyone else make this upgrade? What should I expect? Slower? Faster? The same?

It has a whole gig more VRAM than my 780, which is nice.

  • I'd expect it to be almost imperceptibly slower, based on the fact that a single 780 scores higher than single 970 on Octane Bench. If your motherboard has room, you could use both at the same time for rendering.
