Displacement Maps for DAZ Studio 3Delight + Iray?

The discplacement maps made for Poser don't seem to work right in DAZ Studio.  Are there instructions or tutorials for creating displacement maps for DS?  Is displacement different in 3Delight and Iray?

Thanks!

  • I've had success with moving 3DL displacement maps into the bump channel for Iray

Displacement in Iray displaces vertices of a mesh. There is a special Displacement Subdivision entry, which you will often want to set to at least 2, ideally 3, so that displacement looks passable in Iray. Displacement in Iray can be hard unless you are dealing with a VERY high poly mesh or have a machine that can process high subdivision surfaces (IE: big big big)

3Delight operates directly on the surface of the mesh, so tends to look way better, more easily.

Personally, my recommendation in Iray is to convert a displacement map into a Normal map and use that whenever possible.

In DS, gray is zero. In Poser, black is zero. You will need to adjust your maps accordingly. Any map made for Poser is going to probably look really weird in DS. Try putting the same value in miniumum as you do in maxium, only a negative value of the same. At the same time you might want to lessen overall displacement.

I am told that the surface setting is not memory efficient when preparing the mesh, and can lead to the GPU's RAM being exceeded when it wouldn't have been with a matching level of SubD on the object. Note that although the surface setting can be adjusted per material, the highest value of all surfaces and of the object's own SubD level is the one thata pplies to the whole model.

That depends on the values - in DS the minimum and maximum displacement values are, by default, equal and opposite so mid grey is 0 (well, strictly the two mid grey values bracket 0). Adjusting the minimum to 0 gives the Poser behaviour without changing the maps.

Right you are. Sorry about that ;). I still have problems with conversions from Poser to DS. LOL.
