Figures Not Showing Up in iRay Render

I really don't know what I did, but I have the feeling I must've clicked some button.

Anyway, background and props are showing up and rendering beautifully, but the figures and everything parented to them are not.  The figures show up in all of the wireframes, but disappear as soon as I switch to any drawing setting that is shaded. It only happens in this scene. So I know it's not a problem with the software. It's something I've accidentally done to the settings. I just can't figure out what -- and how to undo it.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

  • If you select the figure and look in the parameters pane, what are the settings in the Display group?

  • Hi, Richard,

Thanks for responding so quickly. The visible in render option is "ON."

  • Ok, so much for that bright idea. Are you getting any errors? Do a render, then go to Help>Troubleshooting>View Log and scroll right to the end to look.

Did you accidently turn down the "Opacity Strength" or the "Cutout Opacity" in the surfaces tab?

    Refraction can make things disappear.

I figured it out. It has to do with the set I was using. I didn't realize this, but it has an underground  (or tunnel) as well as an aboveground/street level. Apparently this underground is actually the ground level as far as the set is concerned -- so the characters appear below the street level by default.

As long as I was viewing the scene in wireframe, the street was invisible, and the figures appeared to be aboveground. As soon as I switched to a shaded drawing setting, the ground appeared and the figures were hidden.

I feel like such an idiot.

Thanks for your help everyone. I learned a lot just by trying your suggestions. I ended up exploring tabs and "pushing buttons" I normally never would've!

Oh I should have remembered that - I've had this happen to me too. This happens a lot when a set is an older set with a "ground" plane and if it's actually possition below the ground level it will not show up in the render - until you drag the ground plane up to above the ground level. I'm glad you found the issue and was able to fix it! :)

Yes, push buttons see what happens, just don't push all of them at the same time or what happens is usually KAABOOOOOOOM!

  • Sorry to dig up an old thread but this might help someone.  I had the same problem.  The figure dissapeared when I moved the camera around in an empty scene, when I found this thread, then It occured to me to turn off Draw Ground in the Iray Environment settings as I was using a blank scene.

And is the camera below the "ground"?
