Looking for an Mi-24 Hind.

Because its big and ugly and an enduring symbol of Soviet military power.
I checked Rendo and Vanishing Point but no luck there. Anyone seen one before?

depends on how good a quality you want and how much you want to spend, google found several free ones but the quality is probably only good enough for background element and not high enough for close up renders. for close up renderss only ones i found are at turbosquid and those tend to be quite high in price. as far as rigged ones none i know of for either daz or poser.
Well, I suppose that ill check out some of the free ones. I forgot to check shareCG. Turbosquid is a bit out of my price range for the moment. I wanted it to be a background model but still relatively close enough to show it off a bit.
At 540000 polys, I bet this one would look sweet in IRAY http://humster3d.com/2015/11/26/mil-mi-24/
Anyone got an extra $150 laying around, LOL
be careful of the sites advretising the free ones, many of those are kinda iffy and the mesh probably is just as iffy on where it came from.
"Big and ugly??!! Like the A10, if it's on your side and you're on the ground, it's the most beautiful thing in the world!
There are a few decent models at the 3dwarehouse for sketchup. I picked one that seemed the most accurate, changed the format to .OBJ and tested it out. it didn't have any UVmapping, so I mapped it, threw on a texture or two and then some iray shaders, about 10 minutes work so depending on your 3D skills, you should be able to get one of them working for your project fairly fast
A little pricey but not super-extravagent: http://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/mil-mi-35-soviet-3ds/267183
ETA There is also a free one in Blender format that is not too bad over at CGTrader
I've bought a few models from Turbo Squid but too often you have to assemble them in an organized nice fashion like they were some unfinished school assignments people decided offer up for sale. Given that, they are very expensive models indeed.
Thats nice alright. The price is waaaayyyyy out of my league.
Yah, thats another excellent example of military power. The A-10 and the Hind are defenitely my kind of ugly.
I was looking at those earlier. Thats not a horrible price. But at that price id like to see some example renders and not promo shots. An Iray conversion would be nice as well. Ill check out CGTrader, I havent heard of them before.
That actually dosent look too bad. 3dwarehouse is another one that I havent heard of. Would you be willing share your UV map?
Also, is that the HIND D that you have there?
Hmmm, defenitely not what I would expect from price tags like you find on turbo squid.
I just took the model into ultimate unwrap and did a quick box UV map, You can use UVMapper classic (free) for the same process.
This thread inspired me, extracted the Hind from COD (i own it) and threw it into DS just to see what it looked like
http://www.turbosquid.com/3d-models/mi-24-helicopter-3d-model/692112
but at $259 not an attractive proposition. The obj format should work in Daz/Poser.
How did you do that??? Which COD? It looks great!
Yah, 259 bucks... Im assuming that these are full license fees for total use of geometry, etc in games, movies, whatever? Im not sure why else they would be that expensive. Even then, I would still expect multiple weapons loadouts, crew and uniforms, poses, the works.
Welll, im not quite sure how to go about this. How do I convert the model into obj? I tried messing with it in hexagon but had no luck.
There are a few options depending on what apps you have installed. You can convert sketchup files (.skp) from ulltimate unwrap with a plugin or use the trail version of sketchup pro to export to .obj. DS does import collada files, and most sketchup files have that download option, so you might try that if avaliable.
Once you get a format that hexagon can import, you can them apply a UVMap in hexagon
Ok. The model is converted. I ran it through UVMapper and created a box UV. How do I apply the UVto the model?
Didnt think youd be teaching a 101 class today did you?

Great, now I am assuming you saved the new ,OBJ after you created a UVMap for it, correct? If so just load that new .OBJ into DS and then head over to the surfacing/rendering tab. If you use the surface selection tool (under tools) you can select the various parts and apply either a seamless texture or a color or both to them. In my image I had bought some seamless camo textures at Rendo and used one of them. You can tile a texture to make the design smaller or larger. You can also apply any iray shaders to the various parts also (like glass) Hope that helps
here's a WIP progress render for you, Thanks for the incentive as I was looking for a render idea, LOL
Nice! Ive had some luck with the model. I think im going to try to add a couple material zones but otherwise its looking fine. Thanks for your help!
