Advice about sharing an asset

Hello everyone!

I've been a long Time D|S and Blender user and I have seen many people (including) having trouble tranferring D|S characters into blender. As an excersise in rigging (which I am learning), I am making a blog about creating a reusable rig that works with an Exported Genesis 3 Female with (hopefully) no weight painting involved.

My question is: Once I finish the rig, is it a violation of the TOS to share it?

Comments

  • Is the rig all your own work or a modified version of the daz rig, after passing through an export-import step? Would the rig need to include mesh or would it be purely the joint settings and a list of weights?

The rig does not include the mesh. So far, the base is a slightly modified skeleton of the G3F after import plus my own metarig for FK/IK and other functions.

  • Are the weights stoed in a way that will work only with the G3F figure, or could they be applied to other mesh in some way (without loading the Daz mesh)?

The custom metarig has constraints and dependencies that will not work without the (tweaked) G3F Bones. The imported G3F themselves have no weight information so, yes, they could be applied to another mesh, provided its has been weight-painted, parented  and the vertex groups match the bone names.

For the sake of Blender's mirroring functions, the imported bones have also been renamed to have the left/right prefixes as sufiixes

  • If it can be used on another mesh then may not be sharable - the EULA allows derivative works if they add to or require the use of the Daz item they derive from (which is why it's OK to project the weights from a Genesis figure into clothing). It's hard to judge whether this would fall foul of that or not, but I rather suspect it would.

I see. Well, glad I asked, thanks!
