What you are looking for are Godrays, and in Iray, they only work in a foggy surrounding, or by using tricks.
The "no purchase veresion needed" tutorial is here: http://www.deviantart.com/journal/Tutorial-Creating-Dust-And-Atmosphere-in-Iray-522291773
And the buy-able products are:
The first one uses atmosphere settings like the turorial. Just insert a strong spotlight. The other two uses planes with images on it. That renders much faster, but the effect is a little bit different from the scatter in the dusty atmosphere one.
This here was made with regular Iray lights, and the manual method:
And here's the same effect of a light mounted to a torch. Of course, you can get better effects by making the light stronger.
EDIT: Replaced first link with the correct one, as the one originally posted was for 3DL
did one 2 weeks ago.
i loaded up 2 regular old ds spotlights. trick is to crank the intensity. cranked up to 200%. had the lights fairly close to subject.
2 spot lights
environment lights turned off, headlamps off. only light source was the spotlights
some awesome stuff in the links! thanks guys. Hey misty would you give me a link to your DA page by message? was curious to see some of your work.
i've only done the 3 iray renders. rest are mostly 3de and carrara.

might try another iray, experimenting how to do artsy iray shadows
Basically, you want to turn a spotlight into something that looks like how a flashlight acts where you can see the cone of light and not just where it hits the ground. I haven't seen any products that do this. I tried to do something similar in this image:
As you can see, I didn't quite hit the mark. I'm still trying different techniques. In this image, I used Expanded Godrays for Iray by Sickleyield and Marshian and attached that to the flashlight from one of the sets here. The flashlight did have a light that could be turned on, but it had the usual problem in Iray where you can see the light at the start and where it hits the ground, but not in between. I had to make more unique opacity map for the light cone so it would look more like light from a flashlight. I'm still playing with it, but it has moved further down on the list of things I want to figure out. To get this to work, the opacity mask would still have to be tweaked more and possibly using bloom which I didn't for this image. One of these days I'll get back to it. It would be nice if some enterprising vendor came up with this. I haven't seen any flashlight models where the light works like this in Iray. I've seen lights like this in 3Delight so I'm assuming there is a way of tricking the light in 3Delight to do this, but I'm not that good with 3Delight yet.
But, it you have the Expanded Godrays for Iray, I would start there. If you happen to find an actual prop that does this, please let me know because I could really use one!
I knew I forgot one... http://www.daz3d.com/architectural-lighting-rig-for-iray
This uses IES profiles in addition to the light, which are basically "shaping" the light beam. It works wonderfully in addition to the Atmospheric camera. And some reading: http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/57470/ies-profiles-in-iray/p1
I'm looking into the Expanded Godrays, keep you posted.
Hahah What a fantastic render! I love it! WELL DONE!
That little guy is like me in the morning "must ...have ..coooofffffeeeee" lol
Is it something like this? I loaded a flashlight, made the bulb emissive and parented a primitive cone to it adding volume, thin walled off and added some SSS. Translucency .62/Scatter and Transmit/Refraction Index and weight 1.0. Turned on emission for the cone 6500/two sided off/100 cd/m^2 and Firefly Filter on, Luminance 10000. Bloom filter on 0.10/1000.0/1.0.
