I would recommend the pwToon shader first and foremost. The visual styles shader is neat and all, but I find that the pwToon stuff is far more useful for making anime.

ah, I thought it was a homebrew, sadly I don't have pwToon or visual style shaders, but have added them to my wishlist. cheers anyway :)

Actually the toon shader was the most useful thing. Though I found the outline and inner line settings to be too high, and the glossiness too high as well overall. I also played around with some of the Visual Style shaders, so there is some other stuff mixed in, and the lighting I think plays the biggest role with how the shading and the whole look comes out for the picture. If the light is too intense, it really screws up the render, and if its too soft it destroys the cartoony vibe. The rest is photoshop post-work. So if you have the pwToon shader, you should be able to get close to these results with fiddling with the adjustments. The Visual Styles shaders can help too.

I found the no postwork clause very hampering, I only have a 32 bit system and constantly run into memory problems, if I need more items in an image than my comp can handle I render in layers and compile in photoshop. I wanted to use more than 1 Rancor but DS just crashed.

    Hope I got it right

Thank you for entering scorpio64dragon. A very nice render. You have it almost correct. For your renderosity and sharecg links we like to indicate that you must register to get these freebies. I usually put a * at the end of the line to indicate that registration is required but you can do any thing you want. We would also like to see the links to Adam's stuff you used. I took the liberty and they are below.

And the last thing we like to see is what you rendered in. Since you say you used PWToon it is kind of obivious you were using DAZStudio but which one? We are interested.

Like I said you have a nice render. Sounds like you found the challenge a challenge. That is one of the purposes of the freebie contest try and get the best from the render machine. Now that you have entered the "raw" image, you can go in and do postwork if you want. You can say the postworked image is NAE and perlk will not put it in the gallery.

Thanks for entering and check you PMs for the link and password to my shaders.

Sign me up! I'm having an awful time getting stuff to work and getting something I want to show in public, Bryce or not. Studio seems to be confused as to what I'm trying to achieve and Bryce just down right refuses to play nice. So, since I can't sing I might as well criticize...or something like that.

Thanks LG, you are on. If your muse comes back and she will you know you can still enter and we won't let you forget to not vote for your own!

What are these shader mixer toon presets that you speak of? No, i found them, I just have never used them. I normally just render with the toon setting in DS, instead of default. Or I do postwork in Gimp, there is a cartoon filter. How are the presets used, and how do they compare to the render setting.

here is some of what I've been working on. NAE, since there is a great amount of postwork. Some I actually traced by hand then scanned back in, some are the cartoon render setting, and some are combinations. Some of these are completely hand drawn. My style is all over the place, I'm still trying to figure out the best way to do it.

It all looks pretty good! I have pwToon but I don't think it was updated to work in DS4, sadly. If I'm wrong, somebody please let me know.

I have no problems with PWToon and transmaps.
With PWtoon you can save presets and apply them quickly.
I don't use Poser so I don't know about its toon capabilities, I find PWToon fast to apply and easy to adjust to get the look you want.

If you are doing a comic with thousands of panels then you need to be able to toon a whole scene in a couple of clicks. It's time consuming enough to dress the figures and pose them in a scene and put a few objects in the scene.
PWtoon I think from memory maybe had a problem with transmapped items. It didn't look too bad, but I find shaderworks in poser with olivier's artmaterials 1 much quicker and looks quite good I think.

On a few Japanese sites you can find some toons shaders for the older Studio 3.

For Studio 4 pwToon and a few other shaders Daz sells will work.

These links may be of use to you One is to some videos that you'll want to watch. He give some info on how they were done in a few of them.

Also do note that cell style render do work better with some figure.

You may need to light a scene differently too to get a good cell style render.

This will be fun but I AM going to miss the sketch engine in Poser

Why will you miss it? You can use Poser if you want. DS has a basic comic render mode as far as I know, but I don't know if it has the options to do the sketch type effect that you mean. I have never tried it. I have pwToon for DS, but I don't know if it works in DS4. I think a lot of things haven't been updated for DS4. Still, as I said, you can use Poser. The sketch engine isn't a paid add-on, is it?

    Dana

I can not use Poser because I don't have it. I used to have access to Poser long time ago and I loved the sketch render option. There is nothing close to it in DS. Actually I have never seen anything like it any where else.
There was a major revamp of Shader Mixer with DS4 and some shaders from older versions will not work.

  • A little Shader help?

I'll experiment a bit with the Velvet and Suede shaders I found among the Supersuit files.

I'm trying to replicate in DAZ Studio a style I'd used in this image:
    Old image

The effect of the inner black done with some of the DIgital Carver Studio plugins for Carrara. It's a nice effect for simulating that rim light effect without having to use rim lights. It's an effect used in comics and animation. PwToon even offers a way to get this effect with its toon look.

I want to try and replicate this look in DS4.5 but without the softness associated with velvet. Maybe a sharper line between the light and dark...

  • A little Shader help?

I'm looking to make a shader which simulates the effect of the blue/black clothing in this picture:

    Marvel's Cyclops image

I've figured out how to do this in pwToon (and in Carrara's shader tree set) , but I'm looking for a more "realistic" look in DAZ Studio 4.5. I've been looking through the shaders which come with the Supersuit Pro Bundle and there are some velvet and suede shaders which might help with this. They might work, but I'm a bit confused on how to adjust the Fresnel settings to get the right look.

If anyone has any help to provide, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I did read it and tried to follow the instructions. Maybe I am misunderstanding what they do. I was trying to save presets with a texture channel so that I could reapply and either keep the texture or keep the texture channel. But when I saved the presets, it seemed it did very little.... I'd have to apply your base shader first, and then my own preset, and then alter to add the textures. It was so time consuming I pretty much gave up. :(

Are you planning on redistributing these presets? Because the preset script is only for making presets for distribution (which the documentation states). If these are only for personal use, you can use the normal Save Preset dialogue. Also, when you save a preset the textures paths are saved too, so you shouldn't have to redo the textures every time you use your own preset.

    belovedalia said:

Glad to hear that 4.5 is a bit better, but I've been holding off on the beta candidate until all the plugins work with it. I have too many shaders and plugins that i can't function without!

So how well does this set handle the textures? Is it better? Because I would totally love this ability. Better yet if a person can be able to add more textures to the shading options- you know, like plaid or bubbles or or diagonal lines, or vertical lines, etc.

Both diffuse lighting and diffuse textures (not to mention bump maps and displacement maps) are all part of the equation, so any textures used will also be screentoned.

As for the screentone pattern, it's dictated by an image file, so you can create and use your own. Numerous patterns are already included, such as lines, dots, and scribbles. You can see examples of this on my tumblr, which i've linked to in the first post, but here it is again.

    http://bishyt.tumblr.com/tagged/Manga-Style-Shaders

Were you the one who did a picture of manga black and white shaders with a helicopter? I think I saw you post pics of this like way back when you were just starting??

No, that certainly wasn't me. I've only been working on this shader for a month or so, and I don't typically do renders of helicopters. :P

Want to see more pics of these shaders :) how well does it work on animals? or settings? can you use these shaders in conjunction with other shaders? like pwToon or visual shaders?

It's a surface shader, so you can use it alongside other shaders. Glad you like what you see so far, and thanks for the support. :)
