Isn't it quite easy for an artist to create mirrored versions of his product?

For example I would like so much to have the wonderful Victoria 5 Elite Ponytail Hair parted conversely.

Victoria 7 is a morph of the genesis 3 female base - and it looks like you don't have that installed. G3F starter essentials is free and in your product library; download and install it and things should look a lot better.

  • Lesson 1...

I'm hoping for a older generation sale to happen sometime at the end of the MM sale... But it will be properly be tough even then to find something I have not already purchased. I usually participate in most sales & buy tons and tons of content  but lately not so much  I did buy some new shader packs and a couple of environment sets.. but nothing really has grabbed me in interest to justify buying anything.  I don't shop by gimmicks.  for example.why do I have to buy this or that I don't need to get a discount for other things i do want or need. so I think that may have a lot to do with it.  it would be great if daz just had straight up 50 --60% off sales. with no side gimmicks.  plus i don't use genesis 3  so that also limits my options for MM sale as well.   & since MM sale started  I've asked questions on sales gimmicks and even made some request for different  sale offers all of which were ignored. so I guess I just sit and wait for something good to show up that I want or can use. other wise it will be the first MM sale i spent under $100 bucks since I started with daz...lol

I got a new catalog from Victoria secrets their having a foundation &  lingerie sale. maybe I'll make my hubby happy and go buy some real, sleaze wear of me instead of my 3d characters. its all about the same price anyway...lol

Ooook ... I did what I could with what I had to work with.  There's an "oopsie" with the leotard which I'll fix in Photoshop.  I'm still learning DForm, and that suit just didn't want to behave.

Regarding her expression ... I played with her eyes, brow, cheeks, jawline, lips, etc.  It seems in the original she is clenching her jaw (or maybe gravity is giving that appearance?).  I'm using Stephanie 4 figure (different skin), along with Victoria morphs; any tips on pulling off a "jaw-clench" look would be appreciated.

    Here's the result:

I thin you need some lighting on this model she is bit too dark compared to the orignal.

That's the High Definition body addon for Victoria 7. I'm honestly not sure how valuable it would be for me personally, but other users might want the extra details it can provide.

Alrighty, gotta ask since it's another weird omission in one of these sales...  I don't see Bethany 7 in the sale. Her Starter and Pro bundles, but not the character by herself. Whereas I see Eva, Victoria, Karen, Michael, etc... right by their respective bundles.

Edit: and testing shows the additional discount does not apply to her and only her of the DAZ Original G3F characters in this sale.

I'm not familiar with a product that is so of the lack of descriptions don't help me. Body copy is invaluable, especially when you are selling something, so maybe this is something I want, maybe not, maybe by the time I ask and find out the sale is over and I don't want it now that it's full price again. I have no problem keeping my money if you wont tell me what it is, but I'm curious; not only to what it is but why Daz thinks the lack of description is a good business model for anyone not familiar with the product.

  • Hair Color

Which "legacy hair" are you referring to, specifically, lucartl?

Hi. This is the product that I bought Sixds: Legacie Hair for Genesis 2 Female(s), Genesis 3 Female(s) and Victoria 4 from goldtassels.

    Hello lucarti and welcome......

Did you have the hair selected when you tried to change it's color ? The item you are changing in any way needs to be selected for changes to take place, another way of trying it is to use the 'surface tool' from the tools menu and open the 'surface' window from 'windows' tab, now when you select anything in your scene you will see a run down of all the surfaces in that item and once you select the item with your 'surface tool' you should have no problem changing it's color.

Hope that's clear for you dude ?

Yes I think I know what you mean. I'm going to try that. Everything it's a little bit difficult at the moment, and unknown, but is FUN!

                      Thank you both!

Aiko 4 like the other generation 4 characters (Victoria 4, Michael 4, Kids 4, etc...)  uses a morph system that can't be installed through Connect. They install through DIM or manual install. Something about how they have to have all morphs in the same runtime to work properly...

Very nice so far. I think a little more lighting for your actor would be helpful to really appreciate the posing work you've done. As far as "jaw-clench", I'm not sure. It's really just additional muscle definition I think and I'm not sure how to dial that into the face. Maybe some of the face morphs can be made to work? I look forward to seeing your progress.

  • Novica & Forum Members Tips & Product Reviews Pt 7

Making good on my promise to showcase items bought in the 90% off sale that Daz_Steve so generously put back on the site. Starting with Nabila. (got her for under $3)

Rating:  Recommend Nabila morphs, Be Pacific swimsuit (TEN materials!), and Elite Ponytail Hair- however it needs bangs morphs IMO. Very limited with what you can do with the bangs which are swept up onto the forehead/crown.

Try Nabila for a unique face- she has an interesting nose. I tweaked the slope of it and the nose tip slightly (and the lips.) There are FOUR HEADS to choose from. The first render is Gingersnap's skin with Nabila tweaked morphs, the second one uses her skin with a slightly different mouth. you can play with the skin materials to lighten or darken, this is out of the box.

The Nabila morph will provide an interesting nose on other characters.  I picked her up during the 90% off and got her for under $3.  You'll find her under FWPixAnson in Content Library under the G2F characters.

The Elite Ponytail Hair  did not have bangs controls, only Hair Forehead Height. Any of the wind morphs that blew the bangs, blew the entire hair. It appears there are 10 morphs for the ponytail, but I just couldn't find any for bangs. I broke it down in scene and also did Parameter>Actor>Pose. If anyone finds bangs, I will change the review.

The Be Pacific Swimsuit is a lot of fun with many material options. TEN!  Highly recommend for a family friendly one piece swimsuit! It loaded correctly, no tweaks needed. You can even raise the neckline if you want to, which is nice. (I didn't.)

HUGE render (1200 pixels tall) CLICK TO ENLARGE, click again.

Nabila morphs were put on Gingersnap's materials. The lips are extremely shiny. Here's the fix if you want a bit more matte.

For the gooey lips, to reduce the shine on these, the two numbers represent the original setting and the new one.  You can also change colors; I stuck to the original and only focused on the shine.

Bump Noise Strength 0 / 4.8   (more bumps, less shine)         Specular Glossiness   93 / 78.3               Specular Noise Density    70 / 73.70  (do that one in small increments)
    Specular 2 Glossiness  65 / 61.8          Velvet Roughness  20 / 21.5

The background is one of the five free ones SereneNight posted for us.

LIGHTING: Using Malibu Overlook from HDR Labs.

I have some questions.  Looking at these settings: Dome Only, Infinite Sphere, Draw Dome Off, Environment Intensity 1.53, Environment Map 1.10, Dome Y Orientation 110

    1. If I have Dome Only, that means Scene isn't active and Scene is spotlights, distant lights, etc, correct?

    2. So if I have Dome Only, and Draw Dome Off, it's still lighting the scene but the image on the dome doesn't show up?

    3. What is the difference in Environment Intensity (I assume how strong the light is?) vs Environment Map increases? (Does that make the image itself brighter?

    4. If I have Dome Off, does Dome Orientation Y still make a difference so far as the program reading the map and doing the light?

  • Tutorial: Converting Textures from Gen2 to Gen3

A little update to questions - in general, Blender texture conversions work very well, but i found 2 main problems - the first is the genital texture maps, which cannot be converted via Blender baking, because there is no clones for Genesis 3 and Genesis 2 gens yet.

Ok, so on the gens converting. While there isn't specifically a clone for gens, if you export them while fitted to the character with the clone active, you will at least get the seams to line up. The interior topology is vastly different, so you'd have to do that by hand. The Map Transfer utility in DS won't work because you need to have both UVs available to transfer between on a single model.

The second is material and shader presets (DUF material files), where amount of surfaces and reference links to texture maps differ very much. But they need to be converted too to keep the desired look of character skins. How do you manage with all that?

I make new utility maps. Otherwise, you have to convert each type of map set one at a time. I've done that as well, and it's not so bad once you have the base figures set up.

For gens, as I found, there exist a way of Map Transfer within DAZ Studio, but the only tutorial about this way I found on DeviantArt is a bit unclear for noobs - is there any illustrated or video tuts about DAZ Map transfer? Or there is any simpler way how to create gens texture in Photoshop etc? I made several attempts, but Hip surface on the torso and the gens don't fit (visible seams and color mismatching). I guess Seam Guides for Genesis 2 gens (Male and Female) would help, because a simple white template doesn't help much. Are there Seam Guides for Genesis 2 genitals?

There might be, but I doubt it. The genitals don't come with the base figures, only with the Pro packs for the adult morphs (Victoria, Michael, etc).

As for ther second problem with DUF, it is not easier too, because DUF files are very hard to edit manually in any text editor - they contain shader info and a great bunch of reference links to maps, and these links mismatch too (G3 Eye Socket should be replaced with Lacrimals and EyeMoisture with EyeReflection - at least, these are best counterparts I could find or I am mistaken?) Is Dimension 3D DSON Editor capable to make such replacing surfaces faster and easier, or there is any other easier way, aside from struggling with text editors? What do you do with such mismatching surfaces, especially for eyes? I tested Genesis 3 Native Eyes with replaced G3M converted textures for irises - but on G3M with all shaders and presets eyes look much better.

Notepad++ is what I'd recommend for editing duf files in a text editor. I am not real familiar with Dimension 3D's editor, so I can't speak to its capabilities. I have my own shader presets that I've set up within DS, so I just use those.

And the third problem is textures made specially for IRAY - diffuse and bump maps look the same as for 3Delight, but specular maps look strange as if inverted and SSS maps sometimes gray. I don't use Iray and now switched to Reality 4, but sometimes it needs adjusting native 3Delight maps.  Do I need to convert Specular and SSS maps too via Blender or I'd better to remake them by myself from Diffuse? Are such Iray maps usable in Reality or 3Delight?

No idea about Reality. For 3Delight it just depends on how your shader is set up. You can convert the maps or make new ones. If you want things to look exactly as they are from the other model, convert every set of maps, copy over the shader.

  • March 2016 New User 3D Art Contest “Posing” (WIP Thread)

OK, I'm an admitted skeptic concerning Victoria 7, as seen by my activity in recent discussions.  So, I decided, skeptic that I am, to see just how flexible V7 really is.  So I dug up a picture of a contortionist I found years ago.  I know that Genesis can't do this, and had never tried contorting G2, so I wanted to see if I could break V7.

Hmm.  Turns out she does pretty good.  Can't get the pose exactly, because V7 needs a third abdomen to do this, but not bad I would say.  Does this convince me to go out and buy G3 stuff... the jury is still out.

It will need some postwork to add the flow of tea into the cup.

[Edit - need to resize the ref pic, it's too big]

Ugh, I do feel kind of sick looking at this but you did a great job with the pose, I believe the original has a bit more of a side twist in her hip, but that is kind of nitpicking.

  • A new UHD line of characters with 800'000+ vertices at base resolution?

    just my two cents here.

I think the first problem is peole confusing vertices and polygons.

Vertices are just points, i could easily put a million verts on a line, and have no polygons.

Polygons are collections of vertices, either in triangles(tris) or Quadlaterals(quads).

So even with 1,000,000 verts i could have 250k polys(quads, just quick division, not real numbers as the actual poly count could be higher or lower)

About 3 times as many polys as v4(77k estimated)

The discussion regarding poly counts is also fairly irrelevant, for one simple reason,

You aren't discussing distribution of those polys.

Puttin a high number in the head would be a good idea, the eye, not so much, the shoulder area meh, the collar area definitely.

The size of those poly is also an issue. You don't use the same size poly for a nipple as you would for the leg. it wouldn't make sense.

The next problem will be diminishing returns.

So you've got a super high poly model, How many can you put in a scene before the system gaks on ya?

Also how high poly count do clothes have to be to look as good or even work?

Now figure that a victoria 4 takes about 300mb presently to load(a bit high really for the base mesh) And triple that, so for one character you are already at one GB, without any morph dials, textures, clothes, hair, props, sets etc.3

Now you're looking at several GB or ram just for that. I've actually had scenes like that with over 4gb of ram taken up by the time a render was started. and that was with "low" poly stuff.

I've actually created a custom v4 with around 1k morph dials in it. converted a bunch of the pbmcc/dc stuff over via the version 3 script, as well as using poser to create a few more. That sucker, without any additional polys, takes1.5GB of ram to load.

Take a look at the difference between a base G3f, about 200-300MB base, now add in various character morphs, add on morphs etc, and she quickly balloons to the 1gb level before adding a specific character and skins.

On aveage these days my g2f takes about 1.5-2Gb to load. So even on my 32GB work station, i can only get about 16 total, unclothed and no hair with just the base texture.

In reality i did a smoke test and after 8 g2f, 5 g3f, 3 g1, and one vickie 4, all clothed and with hair, as well as 4 mid poly vehicles, and a set piece, a couple mesh lights i was over 24.5 GB, and basically the graphics card wasn't having none of it past that.

If you did a poly count on that, it's easily over 1million total.

There's a lot more than just poly counts to figure in.

Really the biggest problem is that most users of daz studio don't even have the system to use it well to begin with.

They might have a dual or quad core processor, an average of 8gb of ram and maybe a half descent graphics card(2gb of ram).

I speak from experience on this one.

Used a dual core athlon 3ghz with 6gb ram and a 512mb graphics card for years.

Heck i learned zbrush, 3ds max, keyshot, and a few others  on that thing and after a certain point the system would just stall.

Frankly i'll just boil it down to this

If you want an insane poly count figure, then go make it and see if it sells.

Stop whining for somebody else to do it for you, and just do it.

To make a long story short if we want more polys its going back to V4/M4 and working with those figures.  I found a product on  Runtime DNA - WMV4: Weight Mapped Victoria 4.  It looks like a weight mapped V4 but its for Poser.  There are other products that improve her bends which is the main benefit of Genesis 3 characters.  I love the G3 characters, but must messing with V4 tonight and seeing much more realistic renders with her....
