pwToon is a Shader. The proper way to apply a shader is to Select the Figure in the Scene Tab, then in the Surfaces tab select all the surface areas to apply the shader to. Then with All of that still selected Double click on the pwToon preset like Cartoon Classic. Then Render when finished.
Also Shaders only funtion properly in the 3DeLight render setting.

  • pwToon Help

I've been using Poser for a couple years now. I'm completely new to Daz Studio and I've just bought pwToon. I'm completely clueless on how to use pwToon with Daz Studio 4.6. I managed to find the pwToon Resources in the Content Library and I see Airbrushed Red, Cartoon Classic, Clean Drawing, etc...

When I click on a figure/character in the Perspective View (middle screen) and then in the Surfaces tab, I randomly click on a Material. Then I go and double-click on Cartoon Classic (for example). Nothing happens (even after rendering the image), I don't see a toon render or the words: Shader: pwToon anywhere on the Surfaces tab.

Can someone enlighten me or provide newbie steps (maybe with pictures using Daz Studio 4.6) that I can follow along to get this to work?

  • Fix black area in Cartoon 3Delight render?

    jestmart said:
This is a known flaw, surfaces that are close to parallel to the camera view will appear black. There are a number of toon shaders that gives better control and results than the built toon render.

Ah ok. I guess I'll look at the other shaders. I kind of liked the default one but I already have PWToon.

    Thank you very much!

  • Applying built-in Daz 4 Toon shader to single objects

Is there a way to apply the cartoon shader build into DAZ 4 to a specific object in a scene, rather than the whole scene? I would like to combine it with PWToon using PWtoon for some objects and the cartoon shader for others.

Any help would be great! Thanks!

  • Rough outlines with Crescent’s pwToon shaders

Hi – I have found that the outlines created by Crescent’s pwToon shaders are relatively rough or pixilated looking. I’m rendering at high resolution but that doesn’t seem to change anything.
Just wondering if this is an inherent quality of Crescent’s shaders or something I’m doing? I’d prefer smoother outlines if possible.
Thank you for any help on this.
    roberto

BTW - The outlines around the hand are the most obvious.

  • 3Delight Surface and Lighting Thread

Not really close, yet, but at least it is sort of heading in the right direction with pwToon.

Edit: Added one more try before sleepy time :) The last try is actually the top one.

Don't think I got any good Noir presets for pwToon, should be doable, but I would have to dabble with it. I got quite decent Cel Shaders for pwToon (Crescent's presets). The only good Sin City style presets I got are for the Visual Style shaders.

If you don't want to deal with surface group then render in Point Cloud mode. It's quicker, and saves from the ID Group messing problem.

Soooo... so that script does enable point cloud for everything we throw at it? Or are you talking about writing pointcloud scripts of our own?

Yes the DS Scripted render Pointcloud mode does the job. Just disable the Occlusion light if you don't want an additional light in your render

    Taken from 3delight Manual :
There is no more subsurface groups: groups are implicitly declared by the geometry rendered
and baked in the point-cloud file.

As for my shaders, I didn't do anything since a few month. Too much work and was too tired most of the time or busy with other things. But I'm a nice guy I took the cissors and did the job and made a sort of panorama (Thanks to XnView which was very handy there)

If you want a look at something see here and here. It's too big to post in the forum. There are various tests and got some cool accidents sometimes

I add two renders here. The first one is one I cropped the head. Why? because with my unrealistic head morph it can distract from judging the shader. That's what I thought when I looked at it earlier. Because when I rendered it, at that time I thought it was not good. But seeing it today I think it's not so bad.

Second one is some playing with NPR shading with Sin City cartoon comic in mind. Question for people having PWtoon : can you achieve this type of render easily?

It looks like my pwToon shaders no longer work; I can't apply them, nor do models saved with the shaders render correctly (models' colours render super flat, textures blank).

I'm on a Mac; can anyone confirm?

    Thanks,
    Walt Sterdan

I just applied and used it. pwToon has files that installs into the Studio folder. You may need to reinstall the pwToon product.

Thanks, knowing that it should work is all I need. I'll track my problem down.

Thanks for the quick response, it's very much appreciated.

    Tracked it down.

DIM has decided to add an extra "DAZ 3D" folder into the install paths; very, very irritating.

Below, the first snapshot shows the path I set for a fresh DAZ install to test where it's going; the second shows the path settings after the install.

This is the first problem I've had with DIM since it came out. Any suggestions that will fix the issue of the extra level of "DAZ 3D" welcome.

    -- Walt Sterdan

Can you post the top of the Settings > Installation tab, that shows where 32-bit and 64-bit software installs?

  • pwToon not showing in Surfaces Tab DS 4.6 Pro

Issue resolved by Re-installing DS Pro 4.6 using DIM.

Seems I may have messed things up when I moved/merged everything from to
some time ago after the initial install. Forgot about that.

One thing though, is that pwToon doesn't seem to be compatible with DS Pro 4.6 64bit ?

Anyhow, Thank you again for the assistance.

OK. Thanks. That's helpful. At least I know I'm doing things correctly. I might try a fresh install of DS 4.6 and pwToon and see what happens. I'll post back with results. Probably tomorrow.

  • pwToon not showing in Surfaces Tab DS 4.6 Pro

There is something wrong with your shaders.

I just tried this. I loaded Genesis, added UberSurface Base from Shader Presets > omnifreaker > UberSurface I then selected Genesis again in the Scene tab, and in the Surfaces tab, and applied pwToon from Shaders > pwToon_DS4 > pwToon Resources > Airbrushed Red.DS, and it works perfectly well.

You may need to update your shaders to get the latest versions?

The name in the Surfaces pane changes to Shader: pwToon for all selected surfaces. I am using Win 7, DS 4.6.0.15

    Thanks for replying.

Yes, I just tried selecting just the G2 face. But once again no pwToon in shader tab. Just the original shader which is omUberSurface.

The non pwToon default DS shader presets all work fine with multiple objects.

Something I've noticed is that if I use a pwToon shader such as Airbrush Red, the selected object surface changes to red but the shader tab keeps showing omUberSurface. The diffuse color setting in the adjustments panel on the right changes to red as well.
