  • Genesis 3 UVs for Genesis and Genesis 2 [Commercial]

Very nice! I do appreciate being able to apply skins up and down the generation gap.

Agreed!  There are a bunch of character shapoes unique to Genesis that it will be awesome to use with G3 skins without having to covert the entire shape via GenX.  This will be a quick buy. :)  That said, I'd hate to see this be the last in your legacy sets, as there are a few skin conversions that I wouldn't mind seeing, like something for Star and Aiko 3 skins to G3F so they can be used with Sakura 8.

    Arrgghhh!!

I thought Aiko 3 used the Victoria 3 UVs.  There were tales (somewhere) of the V3 Legacy UVs set being used quite successfully with Aiko 3 skins - but I can't find a link to them at the moment.

Aiko 3 (and Hiro 3) had extra surfaces so mat poses won't work, but they do use broadly the same mapping as the rest of the 2rd generation figures - there were subtle differences between them (in the eyebrows certainly, possibly in nipple placement) as I recall.

Don't you mean 3rd generation figures?

Indeed, I will fix that. Thanks.

One thing's for sure, Daz will have to start including Genesis 2 in the Legacy content, or promos like this one will have no "incentive to buy" for me. Probably true for anyone who's been around here long enough to already have just about everything we actually want from the Genesis era and earlier!

This for sure.  I am full up on V4/M4 and Genesis items and characters.  I just don't need anymore.  I did pick up some stuff from Sedor, but I hadn't used my coupons yet this month so I got it all for $12

    • Little Devil Poses for Victoria 6
    • FWSA Liam HD for Michael 7
    • FWSA Vampire Expansion and Hunter Kit for Genesis 3 Male(s)
    • FWSA Liam HD + Vampire and Hunter Kit Bundle
    • Star-Crossed Lover - Poses for Victoria 7 and Michael 7

I picked up the Fantasia Hair because its different enough from what I have and it was under $5 and got the Dragon Bridge for free, The Dragon Bridge has been on my wishlist for a long time.

Actually, I mistyped G3f for G8f, since I want to be able to use the A3 and Star skins on Sakura 8.  That said, I'd still buy a dedicated A3 to G3F setup due to the reasons others have since stated.

  • Which DAZ Genesis 8 M/F characters are the most realistic/beautiful?

    3. Here are even more images. Again I argue that color variations and other surface features we think are so important are highly secondary to a truly convincing normal/bump/displacement and proper specular settings. Let me know if you agree.

    4. Here are some people with a little more age. Do we need to bake little dots into the texture itself to represent the pores? Etch litereral lines into the texture for wrinkles, or should we use a flat albedo texture and use displacement or normals or bump to get us there? I think we need a combo as you've said. Some degree of baking but not too much, as I'm going to give the rest of the job over to my surfacing details. I feel that only the most EXTREME wrinkles and pores need to be baked into the texture. Otherwise, I think it almost always better to use surfacing tech.

So as you observe here are my questions

    1. Do you think that undereye wrinkles on most of these people can look convincing as mere lines on a texture file, or do they require some amount of 3d surface detailing?

    2. When you look at the lips, do you think there are actual dark etchings on the lips, or are all those shaded regions merely shadows coming from surface disruptions of some sort? Do you think the lips would look as real if the texture maker sells it to me with those lovely shadows baked into it?

    3. Do you observe huge variations in the skin tone? And if so, do you think that these color shifts are more important that the surface specular behavior?

    4. Look at the amount of specular and the width of that specular. Have you EVER seen a render at Daz3d that demonstrates bumpiness and specular width like this? Isnt it interesting how it never looks like plastic?

True, the only way to get real specular variation like that is to actually affect the mesh.  But then you are talking about a figure with far more polygons than a base DAZ mesh.  Now you are venturing into the deep end of the pool.  You are talking about 3D scans and polarized textures.  Most importantly, you are talking about more knowledge by the artist about how human skin works with its many layers and opacities.  What you are not talking about is a simple photorealistic digital human with an EZ button for $19.95!  The work required to use human figures of that quality far exceed the budget, computer specs, and skill level of the hobbyists who use Daz Studio.  How would they be modeled?  In the neutral pose?  What would happen when a user applies one of those god-awful Daz expression morphs to their digital double?  Why not just put your brand new Ferrari into the hands of a teenager?

These days we have some incredible tools and technology that make it seem on the surface that anyone can instantly create anything.  No need for skill or training, just push the EZ technology button.  This couldn't be further from the truth.  Artistry can't be democratized and passed out like McDonald's hamburgers.  You can't push a button and say BAM! I made a human.   Daz Studio offers some incredible technology for amateurs to play with, so have fun and enjoy.  But let's not kid ourselves into thinking it can create instant art.  It can't.  If you want real art, you will have to work for it.  Here are some good places to start:  https://www.triplegangers.com/    https://www.cgcircuit.com/course/mari-projection-painting  https://texturing.xyz/collections/human

I'd commit to pay a lot more for the right character....I think if you kept the price under $100 (USD) so the amatuer market such as myself don't get priced out like they do with the high end stes that shall be the nameless resources of my Hollywierd conterparts... You should do very well in the long run..  Just thinking out loud.  I could see paying that for a extremely well done character..
We aren't looking for easy... Even the poor need their Picasso tools to work with..  Ours happen to be the divine figure of our fellow humans.. Make it beautiful.
Take care and be blessed.. wonderful learning from you.

Here are the steps that are required to get that perfect human of yours:

    1. Get a 3D scan of the face you desire.  This is crazy expensive, but there are alternatives.  I have a design for a small carousel that rotates 360 degrees and has room for a chair on top.  I have also designed a special rig that carries 4 DSLR cameras vertically.  By slowly rotating your subject on the carousel and snapping as many photos as possible (my remote), one can capture about 100 high resolution (16K) photos of the entire head.  For completeness sake, you will want to do this process again and again for facial expressions.  About thirty scans will give you complete emotional freedom according to the FACS method.  Google "FACS" for more info.

    2.  What to do with all those photos?  Now the fun part starts.  It involves some software from Agisoft called Photoscan.  It will take all of those photos and create a 3D mesh along with diffuse texture.  At this point, it will be raw and not useable in Daz Studio.  Another step is required.

    3.  After cleaning up the raw scan and baking out displacement maps, we can then retopologize it in the modeling software of choice.  Blender has a good retop tool.  There are many.  We can use any Daz base figure as the target.  When you are finished, you should have a proper mesh to use as a morph target in Daz Studio.

    4.  Next step is preparing the diffuse texture for making your other textures.  This process is explained in the referenced tutorials at the websites I previously linked.

    5.  Finally, you can bring all these assets into Daz Studio and begin making your morphs and iRay shaders to bring your figure to life.

I have a mind to do this for my personal project in Maya.  The work should carry directly over to Daz since I am using Daz figures.  It is a lot of work.  I am not sure enough people are willing to pay $100 per figure, but it is something a dedicated individual can certainly do.

A word of warning if you decide to go this route.  Beware that in your quest for the perfect Barbie that you don't instead find you have unwittingly acquired a white elephant.  This is because you have only succeeded in creating a photorealistic human head!  It will look out of place when coupled with a regularly textured Daz body.  In fact, unless you plan to take just head shots, you will find all your assets will pale in comparison to your new beautiful beast.  What about clothing?  Hair?  Props?  They all must be brought up to the high bar you have just set.  What about other figures you plan to bring into your scene?  Right, there are no other figures.  At $100 a pop, you are already in the poor house for the one.  And at such a price, how much variety will the market be able to bear?  Will everyone be willing to pay for the pleasure of owning the exact same Victoria 2000 and do they have a beefy enough computer to handle it?  These are things you have to think about and why there is an explicit separation between the hobbyist and the professional market.  There are creative ways to manage this, but they must be thought thru carefully.  I'm just saying, think about it before you decide to take the red pill.

You'll see my post "PC specs" as  believe after goign from my 960 to 1060 i also noticed things are slower. Adding the CPU as a resource slows the whole thing down even more. I am sure we both have latest Nvidia software installed.

I've render the image below but it took around 2hrs to do. Navigating around in Viewport in Textured shading is a pain if i have more than 2 characters, actually 2 chars it is slow. Not sure if you can view the image....

This upcoming June will be Victoria 6's fifth birthday, with her release being back in June of 2013. For her first birthday, she was offered for free for a limited period during the month of June of 2014. Do you guys think she should be offered for free again during the month of June of 2018 to celebrate her first five years. I am holding out hope for that!

  • Charlotte 8

It makes me sad that I work in a medium where the human form could quite literally be redefined yet all I see being pumped out is bland Caucasian ladies. Thank god I didn't have to wait any longer for Darius and Monique.

I actually thought today might be the release for Mei Lin 8, so I was quite disappointed. While obviously we can customize our own characters, it would be great to have more diverse "base" characters. How about a slimmer black man like our last US President? How about Southeast Asians? Middle-Easterners? North Africans? Middle and South Americans? Lots of other diverse groups to choose from, as well as diversity within the general "black" or "Asian" group. Kimo and Kalea were quite cool, for example. More of that, please. And would love more fantasy/scifi bundles that aren't just the same variants of vampire, zombie, demon, etc. (e.g., Centaur was also pretty cool).

5 minutes before reading this post I was looking at a photo of the Hawaiian queen, Lilioukalani. I find her to be interesting looking and was wishing I could make someone with her look. I am new to Daz so I do not have the knowledge base that you all have. My first impression is that it's lots and lots of pretty, thin, white girls... So thank you for your wish of diversity.

You know, there are lots of white girls in the entire Daz store.  But as far as the Daz Base Characters go, there is a fair amount of diversity.  All you have to do is look down the major character list to find representatives of most ethnicities.  Maybe you'd like to see more ethnic representatives from PAs.  But, the base characters are pretty diverse.  Also, I think that Marika is Latina and Aisling appears to be Eastern European.

It's not that there is no diversity, but I out of the first five G8 female releases, do four of them need to be white? And even with G3 bases, most of them were white.

Just finished watching MTV's latest season of Are You the One (not counting the reunion shows). That cast is more or less what I'd like to see reflected in the characters here (well, could use more Asians, but I'm biased).

Well, I suppose you're right about the order of character releases.  I mean, Victoria obviously represents English Caucasian, Stephanie is the All American Girl, Olympia is Greek, Monique is African American, Josie is clearly supposed to be the teen representative and is clearly caucasian.  Lucas and Michael are both straight up white guys.  Darius is the male Afro American.  And now, Charlotte is perhaps, the British Teen to Twenty - but with lots of ethnic addon characters.

Personally, I could care less about the order that the ethnic figures are released in, simply because I usually create my own characters as needed.  And, I have a huge runtime full of every ethnicity for G3.  But, I can see how you might want to speed things up if you are waiting on a particular ethnic character.

Just by tradition, I will always expect Victoria to be the first release of any new generation - along with Michael as her counterpart.  I don't think of this as a political statement as much as following a long time tradition.  The original Victoria was the "every woman" base character.  So, it was the mesh object and rigging that was important, not the perceived ethnicity - which could be changed by artists and end users as needed.  Back in the very early Poser days, you didn't have specific races of base character, but rather a set of morph dials that you could alter race features, and then set the skin tone to approximate what you were after.  It's with the advent of "Base Characters" that Daz has opted to make representatives of most general ethnicities.  I don't know how much this has to do with racial equality, or simply, marketing to cover a more diverse user group.  For whatever reason, I think Daz does a pretty good job of making sure there is enough racial variety to cover the broad ranges.

If I have any slight criticism of the base characters, it's usually that I find them a bit bland and without a lot of personality.  This is silly on my part, though.  Because the base character should probably be designed for expandibility and adaptation rather than uniqueness.

Sorry, that was the long way round....  I do see your point.  I can't say I think it's really a big deal, since more base characters will soon follow...I'm guessing Mei Lin will be up soon...or Aiko.  Charlotte was a surprise.  But hey, I always look forward to the Asian characters as well. :)

BTW...Who do you think among the Gen3 characters best represented the Hispanic races?

Good question. I actually can't think of any explicitly Hispanic G3 character. FWSA Oscar's pretty good. But thank Saiyaness for Benita! Obviously, I'm greedy and I want more!

    Yours?

Yeah, Benita is awesome...just not a DO base.  I don't think there really is one for either sex.

Which is really strange, given the number of Hispanic people in the world. A DO base for Hispanic characters is long overdue!

Well, there are often included addon Latino / Latina characters in the bundles.  Maybe that's why Daz hasn't ever needed to do a Hispanic base character?

Well the issue with "hispanic" characters, is that being Hispanic is not a race. There are hispanic whites, blacks, and mixed of the conventional "region/races".

  • How to import skinned body part or cloth?

Ok, I think I found out how to do it without redoing anything in Daz. So, I just write the steps here for memory:

Step 0: export g8f, open in maya, create your new mesh and rig to g8f skeleton. Export the new mesh and the skeleton (not the g8f body) as fbx.

Step 1: import in Daz, you should have a Genesis 8 Female node with your mesh inside. You should see your mesh and the G8f skeleton. Unparent your mesh from Genesis 8 Female node. Delete the G8F female node. Now you have only your mesh node.

Step 2: click on your mesh, go to Edit>Object>Set Default Compatibility Bases. Fill in the form. Important part, content type should be "Follower > attachement > ..." and compatibility base /preferred base should be "Genesis 8/Female/...", like in the pic before.

    Step 4: save th .duf

Step 5: you can now fit it to basic g8f figure or to victoria 8 using "Fit to..." command.

    Which is pretty awesome!
