Good Intentions
What books?
Liz the librarian intern at the Central Library decided to deliver the third and final "delayed return" note herself, to show some good positive spirits. The address was down on level 51, in the power generator district. Larry Rokka, known as Larry the Roach, a merchant of smokable flowers, was the borrower. When her colleague heard that Liz was going there, she told her to bring some muscle, just in case.
When they came down there and met Larry, he just replied, books, what books?

Is the figure in the centre of the world (no translations) or further out? Try switching the Instance Optimisation in the Editor tab of Render Settings to something else (and then back again if there are isntacnes in the scene), does that help?
Yes, I haven't moved them at all from the world center. However, in testing, the phenomenon still happens even if I move him off the central grid.
I've played with all the settings under Render Settings > Optimization, including Instance Optimization, but there was no change at all on this phenomenon.
Casement windowslorraineopua said:
I've never seen an inward opening window here in NZ, they are all outward, either side hanging or top hanging, or sliding. Sash windows are in 19th, early 20th C wooden houses, wooden outward casement in later 20th C wooden houses and now aluminium joinery from the late 70' onward.
Given the globalization of manufacturing, I imagine that a lot of it depends upon the manufacturers who build hardware locally or import to an area and what kind of regular stock the local wholesalers/retailers in that area decide to maintain.
I decided to dig a little further on this, and it seems that in North America, the "default" casement window opens outward with a crank. One that opens inward is specifically referred to as an Inward Opening Casement, with the most common reasons for choosing the variant being ease of cleaning, use in combination with external storm shutters, and use in area with extremely high winds. The following is a cut and paste from one window manufacturer describing the five types of casements -
Outward Opening Casements
The window swings outward from the building, which comes with several advantages:
- Creates excellent ventilation by "catching" passing breezes.
- Keeps interior space clear of protruding windows.
- Prevents rain from entering when the window is open.
- Allows for easy screen installation on the interior.
Push-Out Casements
A variant of outward opening windows that uses a manual push-out mechanism instead of a crank:
- Opens with a simple push after unlatching.
- Often used in traditional or historic-style homes.
- Usually has a friction hinge to hold the window open.
- Commonly includes a limiting stay to control the opening angle.
Inward Opening Casements
- Allows for easy cleaning from inside.
- Better suited for buildings exposed to strong winds.
- Requires interior space clearance when open.
- Often used in combination with exterior shutters.
French-Style Casements
These are paired windows that open from the center:
- Both sashes open outward from a central meeting point.
- No center post or mullion when open.
- Provides a wide, unobstructed opening.
- Excellent for emergency egress.
Top-Hung Casements
While technically a different category, these are sometimes grouped with casement windows:
- Hinged at the top and opens outward from the bottom.
- Good for ventilation while providing rain protection.
- Often used in combination with regular casements.
- Common in commercial buildings and modern homes.
So, now you know, and knowing is half of the battle. :)

Complaint: I was woken at 2:30am MDT by one of the fire alarms chirping that its battery needed changing. After changing the one outside my door, I realized it was the one outside my flatmate's! He had closed his door. I waited until he got up, and found out it started chirping at 11:30pm previous evening, when he woke up, closed his door, went back to sleep. I went to change his battery, then found the lid was broken, could not sit properly due to breakage inside and the chirping continues. An urgent workorder to the apartment maintenance team may be answered next week. Of course I have a doctor's appointment within an hour of their arrival for work today.
To add to my fun this morning, Charlie my cat who threw up on my bed Wednesday when I was out, started to do it again this morning. I managed to run in the room in time to shoo him off my bed just in time. So he has been spitting up all over the floors. Sigh.
I have a headache.
(Thom has been known to sleep through the fire alarms going fully off.) (Me, I have 'Mommy Radar' and the slightest noise out of the ordinary triggers me awake.)
Ugh, sucko day for you. I'm sorry. I hope it improves.
When I was a teen I slept through my dad accidentally setting off the fire alarm by making too much particulate on a renovation project he was doing. Now I have really weirdly selective things that wake or do not wake me. My two kids don't always have synchronized sleep schedules, so often my older one is up and about while younger one and I are asleep. (Older child is of an age and responsibility level to be self sufficient about many things, and able/willing to come get me if something crosses into 'need mom' territory, so no biggie.) If my brain classifies something as 'kid going about their thing' noise, I sleep right through it. Including them using the hand vac, which is NOT quiet. Anything else, and I'm awake in a flash.
Especially the soft, repetative noise of a feline about to hurl.
When I was a kid, my younger brother toddled out of bed to inform Mom that he didn't feel good. (Bedrooms all with doors onto the same central hall.) He didn't even get the full sentence out before she was out of bed, had grabbed him up, and was bolting for the bathroom. I remember thinking at the time that she had to have super powers or something.
Now I get it. Not wanting to scrub the carpet at 2 AM is a powerful motivator for speed.

The update has bricked Daz for me:

Anyone got any solutions?
try saving the crash report, using the button on the right in the screenshot, and attaching it to a post. What are your system details? Does this happen if you launch a differently named instance with its own settings? Are you launching the application itself or double-clicking a scene file or using the launch command in DIM (or Daz Central)?
New update jammed my custom actions menuRichard Haseltine said:
That means their location no longer matches the saved path - that is more likely due to an inadvertent move (e.g. system assigning a diffreent drive identifier) or something damaging the file so that paths are not correctly stored rather than something in DS itself.
Yeah... I don't know what happened... I didn't move anything and I discover that: 1) I didn't update yet (in my laptop); 2) this didn't happen in the desktop that updated correctly; 3) worse of it all, it's not only the scripts that disappeared... if I try to set a new action (and remake everything), the new action doesn't show up in the menu... I guess this installation on the laptop is a little problematic because it's from Daz Central times... It was my first, and I didn't reinstall it... I'll try to update and see what happens... B.t.w., there's any way to revert to the old coloring... Didn't quite fancy the green shadings and I liked the colored translation and rotation sliders.
Thanks,
Bruno

Curses! Foiled again! ;) I had a couple of those wishlisted. That'll teach me to read this thread more often.
I did get Rural Crossroads (now removed) along with Neighbor's Treehouse & Lo-poly SUV last week. The Crossroads reminds me of places around here (north central Arkansas). And I have plans for that Treehouse.

If I get a product that is NOT compatible with daz 4.2 can I down load it with dim and use it in blender?
Yeah I should have started with that: The Central District Subway | Daz 3D
Compatible Software:
Poser, Daz to Maya Bridge, Daz to Blender Bridge, Daz to C4D Bridge, Daz to 3ds Max Bridge
File Formats:
Blender, Unreal, 3ds Max, Maya, Cinema 4d
Never understand why daz has things for sale that dpo not work with their software, or at least put up a BIG disclaimer so I don't have to deal with returns.
The Doctor Appreciation thread
Just an oddball mental exercise. How might have Sutekh's prison/tomb appeared if "The Pyramids of Mars" were produced today? Rather than the confining chmaber with the abstract Jackson Pollack paint scheme, we probably would have seen something on the scale and granduer of the Brandon Frasier "Mummy" flicks. I used the "Temple of Anubis" as a starting point, but I chucked the jackal headed statuary in favor of the hawk headed Horus as he was the Osiran who defeated and imprisoned the psychotic demi-god.
But I couldn't even attempt this project until I had Sutekh distinctive mask and pectoral collar I could affix to one figure or another. I have literally searced "on and off" for a few years trying the find something. Anything for download depicts his "real face" usually just a straight up jackal, not the Egyptain themed "Man in the Iron Mask" type helmet. Well, that's not quite true. Some 20+ years ago, there was a group called Who3D that intended to animate missing episodes of Doctor Who using...Poser. One of the members, Adam Bullock, had a collection of models one could download in a format called "Anim8or". One of those was a whole Sutekh figurine. Let's just say the central part of the helmet, the teardrop section with the Ehyptian themed bas relief dertails was usable, the rest, uh, not so much. Well, the other week I got off my a$$ and tried to "box model" (in Wings3D) new "frills" for the mask and whole new collar/yoke. The "frills" were almost too easy, the collar, well that took two full on modeling sessions. Here's the result.

Once I got it to a passable level, I "parented" the props to a vintage PoserWorld figure called the "Evil Keeper". I chose it as it had a great "sitting" morph that bent the "skirt" section in a believable way, closely capturing the pose as Gabriel Woolf sat in the original story. After assembling the simple granite chair, I placed everything within the setting and puttered with lighing for a few days. This is the result.

Thank you!
I don't know how to dress today. It is cold this morning but warm this afternoon. I don't want to carry a jacket around because it's cold outside right now but won't be later.

ShareCG was still up at around 4am central time this morning and I was able to grab a few more items.. darn now its gone for good.. wish I would have stayed up and grabbed a few more items

I was also trying to capture details about usage for individual items.. some were unrestricted use while some were all rights reserved. I did have to log in multiple times in order to finally "get into" the site and managed to contact a couple of artists thanking them for their artistic talent and hoping they would move their items over.I mainly grabbed the "Unrestricted Use" items as I knew I could repost them elsewhere for others who may not have been able to get them. I ended up downloading about 600 assets. Now I just need to find the time to get them posted on Renderosity and/or RenderHub and make promo images for the assets that meet each site's guidelines.

Matt_Castle It's retroactive!

My signature banner disappeared, since it was in the gallery and not uploaded to the forums - I put it on my own site now. Linwelly's signature banner is gone.
Look at your images in the Render your buys! All time challenges page: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/657491/render-your-buys-all-time-challenges/p5

Oh, you have got to be KIDDING.
I've specifically used the on-site gallery for years because it should have avoided the issues with yet another image hosting site going dark or changing its user agreement, and because despite the gallery's poor integration with the forums it's still massively more convenient having one central gallery rather than a load of forum attachments strewn across hundreds of posts over dozens of different threads (with a search function that is absolutely, totally, completely and entirely useless for almost any actual purpose), but no, apparently we can't have anything nice.
This is utterly unacceptable Daz. The community has already been suffering for some time for a decline in the actual art content - back when I first arrived, product release threads were alive with people posting renders of what they'd done with it, while now we're far more likely to get a barrage of complaints about the price or how mediaeval market places shouldn't have potatoes (how dare you get that wrong, I have twenty seven degrees in history, and this product is useless to anyone and every one, blah blah blah).
You know what would really make that whole thing worse? Making most of the art that has been posted entirely disappear.
I really hope this is a temporary bug or oversight that someone is going to fix sharpish.
Chloe 9 thoughtsI see the render by Netherfalcon of Chloe9 in a top:
And see that there is no complete character specific projection morph if I'm reading the odd shaped wrinkles in the top right. The front of her top looks, frankly, a bit of a mess with odd creases radiating around each breast, having a slight central bulge in the top between the breasts and an apparent crease in the top where the unisex base figure's pectorals go. If I'm right, this shows a terrible missed opportunity to have a small chested 'state of the art' character showing how it should be done for future G9 characters. Instead, I am sadly disappointed. A missed oportunity to get this sort of thing sorted once & for all to show as a reference for how to do it.
Regards,
Richard.

AI as render engineA thing to keep in mind is that, if things continue as they seem to be going, that art created by AI programs will be be far less protected by copyright, if at all. Beyond that, I've tried a number of the various programs, most of them still have a lot of issues with basic anatomy. That said, I recently bought Gigapixel to enlarge some old images and I've been experimenting with using the AI function it on some of my newer images with the enhancement/extrapolation levels set very low, then using the reuslting image to augment parts of the original render. Where it really excels is on cleaning up digital hair and creating realistic... if often way over the top... wrinkles on cloth or on the skin at joints like the underarms. Unfortunately, where it's still incredibly weak is on things like hands, feet, and smaller skin details like nipples , navels, small details like text tends to become gibberish, and while the AI will refine some elements of a facial structure, it also tends to make the characters look significantly different from the original model. In other words, it's still a long way away from being something that I'd be ready to trust as the central point of control for creating anything I was going to put my name on.
