  • Is Daz studio useful in any way?

That's an amazing render, Kyoto Kid. I really like that. The fact that you used a photo background is barely noticable. It just looks like part of the scene. Love how happy the girls look and how detailed the render is.

This is an example of what I usually do. I guess I'm more interested in portraying the figure than anything else; DAZ people are so cool. The background is by Sveva. I got the Genesis 8 character for free during the recent DAZ DAY thing. She is Neiva HD for Victoria 8  by Emrys and Fred Winkler Art. I like how she's got a snowflake geoshell to add to her sort of strange beauty. The lights are the PTF Very Cool Lights that were a Christmas gift freebie last year.

Apparently I've now gone past the 12 GB on my GPU as it only renders with CPU now.

Thanks!  And wow, that looks great!  I never really paid that much attention to the height, but you're right, looks like V8 may be the tallest and then they shrink down a bit.  I wonder what Victoria 10 will look like?

    The Last Hipster

To solve the riddle, Victoria and Karen needed to find the answer to a question, a question that only one of the last Hipster could answer. The last hipster was the only surviving hipster from the great purge in 2347, and have been kept alive even since, together with three clones, just in case. The question they needed the answer to was:
    - "How to you make a perfect vegan chai expresso latte with almond and soy milk?"

I've taken a break from spending on DAZ assets. I realized it became more about the shopping for me than creating art. Also, my main render machine gave up the ghost after 6 years, and I don't have the money to replace it. I've found that making little pictures on my laptop is soothing, and for some reason when I did a completely new install of DAZ on my laptop, which is a newer machine, DAZ Install Manager works great for me, which it never did on my desktop. I'm not tech savvy, so I have no idea why. I am on a fixed income, and DAZ has always been a hobby. Not spending so much and having a rather small SSD on my laptop has forced me to choose which content I really want to work with, and which to uninstall to save hard drive space. I was stunned when I looked at the amount I had spent on DAZ assets. And I had kind of a sad feeling too, like is what I've spent really worth what I am getting out of it? So yes, I am taking a break from spending for now. I did try going without DAZ completely for a couple months and I missed making my princess and fairy pictures so much that I put DAZ on my laptop. We'll see. I enjoy this thread because it shows me how others are dealing with their "buyer's remorse." Oh, I also stopped my subscription to DAZ DEALS because while it is incredibly useful, even necessary, for shopping on the DAZ website, it was only encouraging my shopping habit. I wish the OP the best of luck, and hope you can find emotional peace and still enjoy a wonderful art form while staying within budget.

...in a similar boat here regarding a fixed pension and hardware, This is what makes it difficult to adopt a whole new generation of characters so I stopped at G8.  Oh I have a few G9 characters, all of which creatures and monsters, as that is where it really shines.  For humans (and elves, dwarfs, etc) G3/G8 are more than sufficient as between the two there is 7 years worth of content which often gets deeply discounted these days (even ending up in Lightning Deals at ridiculously low prices).   So yes, my purchasing of new items has dropped measurably, save for props, vehicles, and architecture as I have all the character development content I need (a good portion of which is merchant resource and utility based)..

I am still working on a system I built13 years ago (yeah real old school as it still uses DDR3 memory) which has reached the limit of how far it can be updated.  It is so old that the RTX 3060 I picked up a couple years ago isn't compatible with the MB's ancient BIOS.  It is also still on Win 7 so am stuck at Daz release 4.21.0.5 as it is the last version which uses an Nvidia driver that supports the old OS for rendering. I have an upgrade planned to make it Win 11 and RTX 3060 compatible but basically need a small "windfall" to do it (and some components for that are already heading towards "legacy" status).

Even with these limitations I manage, it may not be as fast as the newest tech but it does get the job done (though sometimes dForce crashes the display driver).  I do hold my breath every morning when I start it up and breathe a sigh of relief when I see the Windows start up screen appear.

Indeed this not a hobby for the financially limited unless one is resourceful and patient.

I totally get where you're coming from, Kyoto Kid. I admire that you are so resourceful in keeping your render machine going and using the assets you have to their best advantage.

I'm going to take some time to think about how or if I want to go about getting a newer desktop. In the meantime I will try not to melt my laptop rendering stuff.

I basically stick to a figure with hair, an outfit, and possibly some jewelry and do portraits using a 2D background and different light sets. I know using a 2D background is somewhat frowned on because it's not "real" 3D art, but it uses less resources and is what I like to do, so meh. The other store has a ton of 2D backgrounds to choose from. I have figures from Victoria 3 on all the way up to Genesis 9, but I don't have a lot of Genesis 9 content because it's so expensive. I found I have a ton of G8 content, and I like to use that. It works great and looks good still.

And I have to agree with FirstBastion that DAZ Studio is useful, for artistic expression etc, but I guess like anything else, in my case moderation is best.

  • Marahzen's Musings on Creating Characters (and other matters)

A lot of my summer has been hijacked by non-art-related things, but I had some time this weekend to tinker a bit, and I decided to put the recently released Young Victoria shape to the test for my purposes - that is modification of my custom characters.

    https://www.daz3d.com/young-victoria

Because a significant part of my story involves parallel story-telling of events that occurred when my main character was a young teen, contrasted with a "present day" in which she's a young adult - literally, a four-year gap for much of it - I was game to try out a new product offering a "14-year-old" version.

Here, I am testing with a character I've been doing recent G9 product testing with, essentially the same character as from my July 4 post. Specifically, she's actually a Man Friday conversion of a G8.1 character created by the original Face Transfer.

So I set up a test scene with this recently acquired High School Bathroom so I could compare the overall impression, and then also did a close-up of the face. Young Victoria offers a one-click option for Age 14 and Age 18, or new dials - Victoria 9 Young and Victoria 9 Young Proportions. The one-click applies the Victoria 9 shapes - my test only includes the new Victoria 9 Young dials dialed at 100%, which is what the one-click for Age 14 applies. (The one-click for Age 18 applies differing values closer to 50%.) In my case, I'm not working with Victoria 9 - I'm working with a custom character, so I only wanted the "Victoria 9 Young" shaping.

    Here are the results:

Custom G9 Franken-character: No shaping, left; Same character with Victoria 9 Young and VIctoria 9 Young Proportions = 100%, right.

Same character. (Ignore the lip texture issue, which isn't related to this experiment. smiley ) No shaping, left. VIctoria 9 Young shapes as noted above, = 100%, right.

I'm pretty satisfied with this, actually. Presuming they make a "Young Michael" version, I'll probably pick it up. (I didn't test this one with a G9M custom character, but I wouldn't expect it to do that - there are some female-specific considerations to "de-aging" an adult female to a young teen female.) Of course I do have all of the other G9 age/shape products, but I like having an assortment of tools to choose among.

As a footnote, for anyone who wanders across this thread, as I mentioned in a previous post somewhere, I've generally had good success using G9 character "shapes" on my custom G9 characters, though sometimes you can't crank them to 100%.

How does that work? I can type in a celebrity's name and get a good likenees, even if they don't have a digital version in the store. (see attached image of dwayne johnson, the rock)

So they are producing a TON of art using products that DAZ does NOT have in it's market place? I say this as I can generate so many images of scenes that have items in them that DAZ does not sell. I can also generate images with clothing items that DAZ does not sell.

A LoRA is just training and enhancing the checkpoint used, so just because DAZ used their own art to train the LoRA does not mean that is all the user will get, only that the user can be more specific if they WANT to use DAZ items when they generate an image. Like if I wanted to tell the AI to genrate an image of victoria 9. If there is no LoRA for Victoria 9 plugged in, then my results woun't look anything like Victoria 9 unless there are a ton of Victoria 9 images on the internet.

Daz AI is Daz's LORAs over Stability's SDXL base model.  LORAs are like morphs, adding or changing the weights of the base model.  That's why you can generate things that SDXL has learned but are not in the LORAs.  Also, the model only knows what it was trained on, not how many pictures of something there is on the internet.  The training dataset for SDXL I do not believe has been disclosed but it contains both images from the internet and synthetically created images.

  • Where exactly are the lips on Genesis 8.1?

    felis said:

The image your are showing is with a subdivided mesh.

Base resolution is like the attached.

Lips don't have a sharp edge. It is a blurry line.

For defining where you want the makeup, try to look at the screenshot of base G8F

Thanks felis.  The image is actually the template I downloaded from the Essentials pack.  I have no idea why they would have it subdivided.  laugh

It's actually 8.1, but apparently it's just the model and possibly morphs adding to the issue - Victoria 8.1 skin on Kiko 8.1, with some morphs for the head and nose (mosly Aiko).  The lips on the map are a bit small.

And I agree on the line.  That's why I like a product from outoftouch for lips, it's old and sold at the other popular store.  The lipstick files are all PNGs with transparency so that I can edit them in Photoshop.

I think I was just up too late, a lightbulb went off this morning to look at the normal map.  smiley

I went in and edited the normal map to align up with the lips and it's much better.

  • G8F anatomical element seamless textures?

    felis said:

I don't think I can follow your argumentation.

    Below are 3 images:

Victoria 8, out of the box

    Image removed

Victoria 8 with genitals and gen texture

    Image removed

Victoria 8 with genitals and torso texture (modified UV)

    Image removed

I would not say there is much difference.

If you look at the more intime parts, there might be differences, as the torso texture don't relate to those, but these could not be generated by a script. Because where would you get the input to be able to create a texture?

It's too hard to explain without being able to show the appropriate images. I think I understand your examples, even if the images were removed. It depends on how the genitals are painted on the torso texture map, the more detailed they are, or the greater the colour variation there is the worse it looks using the modified UV. A crude example below. If I could show you actual screen shots it would make sense.

But a bit of messing around in photoshop, and I can get acceptable results.

The only thing the script does is it creates the edge which matches perfectly with the torso, it samples the specific area of the torso texture, the rest will have to be added in photoshop. That's all the "Texture Exchanger For G8M" does, it creates a seamless edge of all the used textures, diffuse, normal, bump and specular. It's then up to you to find a genital texture of similar tone and using the provided mask you copy and paste and adjust the elements until you have a finished texture.
