Confused by DS download, some questions
Richard, I was on the DAZ Central page, and thought I was downloading DS from there. I was wrong as DAZ Central was involved in that then.
I assume if I download DS through DIM I will have more control over where DS is located, and where my content is stored.
Is that correct?

What helps me in the similar situations is just closing Daz Central, reopening it, and installing again: it usually picks up where it left off. Last time when I was installing the whole Studio, it often took multiple restarts of the DC for the installation to finally pick up.

The launchable thing is kind of silly, but otherwise I like the new DIM. Startup is much faster.
It's a feature Daz Central has that some segment of users seem to use. The whole thing can be turned off 9well, hidden) - see the change log for 1.4.1.18.
Oh, I disabled it as soon as I saw the option. This also removed the "Launchable" category from the top of the installed items list. I don't use Hexagon often enough to need to see it at the top of that list.
UltraScenery - new territory [Commercial]The render reminded me of Greece and California, wine country or the central coast area. I am hoping for a Mediterranean regional pack might be coming.
The render is just lovely Howie. Home.
Transferring DAZ to new/different ComputerDoes the file you are activating have an icon?
And have you tried other clothing for V4.2. Or tried a newer generation content, to test if it is only V4.2 that has problems or it is more general.
The problem seems to be with that set of content. I only have a hair accessory which will load correctly.
If you go to your Content Library > Products > Steampunk Outfit for v4, which icons are there then?
The icons are there and it all looks like it should. They just won't load onto the model. They also turned up in "lost and found" whatever that means.
Those are native DS materials auto-loading when a PZ2 Poser material is loaded - it is not loading the basic outfit, which will be in /Users/Shared/My DAZ 3D Library/characters/some folder/. Don't try opening this through Daz Central, try loading it directly from the Content Library under Poser Formats>My Daz 3d Library>Figures>Some folder (I don't know what some folder would actually be called)
Obviously it will be different on my system. So "poser formats"....?
Aha!!!
They load a base mesh and then presumably you go to the content to load the textures. That did it.
Gee.
Got to say....that's a bit of a tough one to figure out unless you are highly clairvoyent. I'm not that new to this sort of thing. :-(
However - bravo for knowing about poser formats. Thanks for the help.
Edit....so it loaded the mesh but the shaders and accessories still will not load. This is such a bizarre workflow and way of doing things. I guess it makes sense if you use it a lot. Any idea why the shaders won't load? I have the mesh loaded up but they will not load the shaders.

Installing of Daz Studio stoppedTry using Install Manager - it should pick up the settings from Daz central but seems better able to cope with recovering partial instalaltions (in this case, I suspect the application and perhaps some cotnent are isntalled and other content that is part of the basic Daz Studio product set are the problem).
Installing of Daz Studio stoppedHello All,
I installed Daz Central, but Daz Studio installing stopped at 89%, this is the situation for neary 1 week now.
Can someone help me how to solve it or what can be the issue?
installed contentI have just completely reloaded my operating system, windows 10 home, because my computer is reasonably old I install Daz studio using install manager instead of Daz central.
When I load Daz Atudio to use it I have no content, althogh according to Install Manager it has been, I get this error message at the start.
A valid PostgreSQL CMS connetction could not be established, several Daz Studio features That require a valid PostgreSQL CMS connection,
such as context aware content views and loading content installed using Daz connect service will not be available.
Check your network anti-virus and firewall settings for conflicts.
If anyons could help me in this matter, it would be greatly appreciated, I have this problem on both of my main computers.
Thanks in advance, Cheers.
Transferring DAZ to new/different ComputerUpdate: V4 turned up in smart content "figures". I could get the model loaded. Not as much luck with the Steampunk outfit. Just like with the Mac, on the PC I can get to it via Daz central (the content shows), but it won't load onto the model. There was a hair accessory which did. Trying to get more information via right-click yielded a webpage "page not found".
Any idea how to get this paid content to work? When I opened the model there was a check box for "legacy...something something something". I don't know if that might be the reason and I'll check next but any further help would be greatly appreciated.
Transferring DAZ to new/different ComputerOn the PC now:
- I open Daz central, and I can see that I need to install the V4. I click install and it downloads. When I click open I get this:
- It should show an image of the V4 and it doesn't. Duly if I try to drag in it in to the viewport area, nothing happens. On the Mac, this was avilable and I could drag it into the viewport, but I could drag on any clothes. Its worked in the past but its not working now. I really can't figure it out and this not my first rodeo with software. There are no error messgaes that clue me in to what might be missing/required.
Transferring DAZ to new/different ComputerHi - what is the process for transferring all Daz content to a new/different computer?
I currently have Daz on a Mac, and I am looking to move everything to a dedicated Windows computer running W10.
- The Windows computer has latest Daz installed with everything I think I need. However, after downloading my content the download manager will not install it. Do I need to uninstall from the Mac first?
- Some of the content is visible in Daz Studio on the PC, but it won't open.
- Experimenting on the Mac, my V4 cothing is not loading onto the V4 model.
- The install manager has uninstall options. Presumably uninstall everything and then delete the manager?
- Just on the Mac...I installed Daz Central and wanted to open the Library Steampunk Outfit for V4, and also Victorian Innocence for V4, it guided me through to the location of the content in Daz Studio which I had already found anyway, but the clothing articles will not load on to the V4 model. The same thing occured on PC, but presumably the content had not been installed there.
- Opening Victoria 4 from Daz central also does not work.
- Double clicking on content I am trying to load takes me to a 404 page not found error on the pop-up screen in Daz Studio (on mac).
I think there are 2 parts to my query; 1) how to successfully access my content on a new/different computer and remove Daz from the old. 2) Why the V4 model which loads fine into Daz Studio will not load the accessories for it.
What happened to the split-up outfits?Sevrin said:

I liked the split items, and I don't see how it would hurt folks who didn't like them. You could still buy the entire garment if you wanted to.
And have a huge mess in Daz Central and Smart Content as every single piece was counted as separate item. Same for the store, for that matter, scrolling past countless "piece of outfit" items was somewhat annoying.
Makes me wonder what the sales results were for full outfit vs. pieces, but I doubt Daz will share any ratios/percentages.
The extra items in Smart Content were my only problem with this. If Daz could some how ship outfits like outfits for people who bought the whole thing, I'd like to see separates come back.
Smart Content is kind of a mess generally right now, what with Lost & Found overflowing with items. It's a feature I use a lot, and hope that it will get some attention.
That is a matter of getting the metadata corrected, Smart Content and Categories are just reporting what that says.

How to find out about updates?NyX said:
I know it's not popular, but if you use (or check) Smart Content, items that have an update available will show a little circle type thing on the thumbnail. If you click on the thumbnail to open the product, there will be an "update" button underneath the main thumbnail.
That is only if they are installed through Daz Connect, and Daz Studio has been online since the update was issued. If the content was installed through DIM, Daz Central, or Daz Studio itself then an update (any change from the downloaded version) should be flagged.
AI is going to be our biggest game changerAI has become the most game-changing movement since the Industrial Revolution. Is it surprising that the resulting paradigm shift will potentially upend society as mechanical automation did? Nevertheless, most people who discuss this topic inevitably focus on the wrong aspect, IMO. Again, not surprising, since artists are the ones who are most passionate about the changes that will take place. But, as Bluejaunte noted, it's an interesting conundrum and it will cause many to rethink issues that previously went unnoticed. For example:
If commissioned to create an image of a Kakapo, what is the first thing you would do? The vast majority of you would probably Google it for lack of awareness of this rare flightless bird. Can any of you draw or paint a picture of it without such a reference? Would you go as far as to hire a photographer to stalk one in the wild or would an internet image search suffice? After you had gathered several different photos of the bird (as every good artist would) and completed your artwork for your client, would you consider tracking down the creators of the reference images to compensate them? To take things further, as an artist, could you create anything at all without some sort of visual reference? There is a very interesting article about a man who was born blind, yet created paintings (https://theconversation.com/how-a-blind-artist-is-challenging-our-understanding-of-colour-93872) with accurate colors. It is a very outstanding example of human creativity, but what shouldn't be overlooked is his father's role in training him to "see" images and colors. The obvious, yet often missed message in all this is that the same rule applies to machines as to humans: if there is no input, there is no output. Conversely, if the input is substantial, meaningful results can happen. For humans as well as machines.
So why haven't artists historically charged fees to human onlookers of their intellectual property? Primarily precisely because we are humans. Art, most art, is meant to be shared and admired - the wider the outreach, the better. When patrons walk into a gallery, the artists aren't suspicious that they are examining their work in order to duplicate their style. Even if they were, it takes humans years of examining and experiencing inputs for us to develop our artistic talent to the level of professionals. Humans need more time. Humans love to admire art. And many humans eventually pay for it in some fashion or form. So historically, humans looking at an artist's work have not been perceived as a threat but was actually their goal. Then came the machines.
Let's be clear: Machines don't love art. They are not attracted by aesthetics. Their primary (only?) objective is to analyze it in order to fulfill their programming. They are not consumers or patrons who wish to one day purchase or even create art of their own. They were designed to do one thing and do it well - to assimilate input and create output defined according to prescribed algorithms. While it used a roughly similar method, gathering data from sources outside itself to reach seemingly independent conclusions, it does it way faster than humans...and therein lies the threat. The efficiency and blistering speed of machine learning has turned an innocuous action, examining artwork, into an existential crisis for many artists. But for all such paradigm shifts in the history of mankind, the central issue has never changed and it doesn't change here. The machines aren't the problem. The problem is us.
AI isn't evil. It isn't good. It doesn't need rights because it doesn't desire anything. Too many people are focusing on the "I" in AI and not enough mention of the "A". The "A" stands for artificial. It isn't really intelligent. It doesn't want to "steal" your art. It has no motivations or dreams or inherent goals. AI is a tool and therefore an extension of the user. Let's not forget that. If you feel your IP is being stolen, it isn't AI that is doing it. Stealing implies a thief. Thieves are motivated by greed or need. AI has neither feeling. It was created to accomplish a general task. Humans use it for specific purposes, whether to enhance their own creativity or to duplicate Disney characters for illicit intentions. This is an age-old problem. As humans, we are our own worst enemy. Someone created a hammer, we use it to bludgeon our neighbor. The Chinese invented explosive powder, we use it to create mass destruction. A new computer technology arises, and many will use it to foment chaos and for selfish gain. Because this is who we are.
Nevertheless, AI isn't going away. Even if the court cases are found in favor of artists, the economics of creating art will change more in favor of the corporations and those who are inventive enough to take advantage. We can gripe and complain, but the future is as crystal clear as the past. Jobs will disappear (remember the Shoemaker and the Coachmaker? I thought not) and other professions will arise. And people will use this technology to do nefarious things. AI is groundbreaking tech and I plan to use it as far as it helps me meet my creative requirements but let's not mistake the villain in this story. Mankind always takes the low road.

Thanks Sevrin and melanie for the replies.
One final question I have is will DIM recognize the products that have been installed through DazCentral? Hopefully that will be the case so that I don't have to 're-install' everything again in order for DIM to see and recognize it.
Install Manager will pick up the settings and actions from Daz Central, and vice versa (if you chnage the paths in Install manager, so they no longer match the options Daz Central gives, then its settings will say that the paths are being managed by Install Manager).

Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply. So based on the answers that have been provided, it seems that people prefer to use DIM which does provide notifications of updates. Does anyone know why DazCentral doesn't flag products that have updates? I thought DazCentral was the downlaod application that was supposed to replace DIM.
And as I had asked in the other threads, what are the ways that product updates are communicated to us, i.e. how do folks find out about updates? Is the only avenue available to us through DIM and possibly by monitoring the forums?
Daz Central is a simplified version of DIM - think of it as a pen knife compared to DIM's Swiss Army knife.
Back in the day, after making a purchase you pulled up your product library listing and started downloading. One item at a time. And every item was an executable installer, which began to cause problems with Macs as older installers became obsolete and had to be rebuilt. We found out about updates mostly by accident. There were requests - in some cases, demands - for a better way.
We got DIM.
When you log in to the store it walks your product library and compares it to what you have on your system and shows you what has been updated. It gives flexibility on where to put things - downloads, executables, installtion directories - and it can restart interrupted downloads. It was - glorious. It has been expanded and updated, adding features like pulling down thumbnails and linking to a product's readme page.
Some people were overwhelmed with the flexibility - so two (three?) years ago Daz added Central - effectively a stripped down version of DIM, that was easier to configure. Central should be notifying you about updates but I'm not sure. I looked at it when it came out and realized it wouldn't work for me - I have my executables on the C: drive and content on the D:, E:, and F: drives, with my downloads on an external K: drive - so I haven't paid any real attention to Central since it came out.
How to find out about updates?Daz central is rubbish, I don't even go online when using daz as I cannot even stand Daz connect, so it's DIM all the way!
