Ok got it! Yes I always thought 6500K was the appropriate default value and always start with everything zeroed out (doge burn and saturation). I find it easier to adjust those things in the end;)

Wowie did you actually solve the HDRI diffuse sampling thingy? I just tried turning off everything but the environment, zeroed everything and loaded an HDRI. Looks clean enough to mesurprise. Even Kettu's shadowcatcher seems to work much better? Only one HDRI tested though...

...so pure HDRI light, same skin...

    image

Enjoying this info/thread on the update. Thanks for posting your progress/experiments.

I was curious about the nature of the HDRIs you're using with AWE. We've got 'standard'  3DL and Iray HDRIs widely available as well as loads of external HDRI sources out there, etc. Add parris's (PA) "IBL master" product to the 3DL/Iray mix and the head spins a bit...

Can I ask how you would describe the most 'plug n play' HDRI format you use? Considering the collection of both IRAY and 3DL HDRI products I've got, are there any favorite conversions or setting-hacks you would recommend to get them to work with the AWE toolkit?

(If you've already covered this in one of the (your) AWE threads, please just let me know and I'll happily go find your notes. Some long forum threads I'll slog through, but I really enjoy your explorations and thoughts as you go, and always wish there were more when I get to the ends of them, with wowie and kettu's comments and insights making for fascinating - if often slightly over-my-head - reading).

    tnx to all,

  • Using Daz for comics - Q-32

Hi all, I'm new here on the forum, but not new to Daz. I thought I might share some images of a comic/graphic novel I'm creating titled Q-32. It's a story about a young woman who becomes enslaved by an ideological cult and eventually ends up going into space. It gets complicated, it gets political and it gets a lot of corny slapstick gags too. It contains adult themes, but nothing pornographic. It's a big work in progress, about 40 episodes and I'm just about to start writing episode 7 so you can see it's a big WIP, which I may never get to finish. Who knows? Chapter 1 was published by Amazon and is still available. When it was published, I was very disappointed by the quality of graphics on the Kindle system, so I decided to self publish and put this work up on my own site. I keep the graphics high quality as best I can and run the episodes on 1900 x 1080 px big screen. It is not phone screen fiendly. So much for backstory, now on to the topic - short story, I adopted and adapted a sytem of shaders, I found a tutorial on by John Monk, "Daz3D Tutorial - Advance Cartooning with Manga Style Shaders (Part 1)"  I love the style and presented here for discussion are some selected frames. It began in a minimalist style and then developed into the more standard comic format. Technical: all done on Default 3DL, four times oversize, TIFF, to keep quality and post worked in Photoshop. The renders usually require considerable post line work (inking) that varies depending on how much detail there is. Next, I take the finished TIFF, convert to PNG and do the final comic frame assembly in a very old Macromedia Flash 4 program which gives me great flexibility with text and outputs the finished images as PNGs to size 1920 x 1080 px. These images are too big for good web performance and I was fortunate to find some good people who compress raster files, for free, called TinyPNG. They reduce file size by about 75%. From about 2M to 500kb, without much loss of quality. Any comments or questions, please go right ahead. I love the style and I'm very happy with it, I hope you like it too. Cheers.

  • G9 Question

    morrisonmp said:

Not looking to stir up any controversy... I'm really hoping to get a good answer to this question.

After not being impressed at first, some G9 characters have started to trickle out that I'm interested in playing around with.

My question: Are the G9 figures still having issues with joint creases looking weird (like in the legs and stuff) when bending? I know this was an issue, has it been resolved at all?

    Thank you.

I would highly recomment you download the Genesis 9 Essentials free, then go into the Freebie Forum section and download a bunch of the free G9 stuff users have generiously provided.  there are 200+ morphs for G9, some shoes, an outfit or two.  Many of the G9 freebies have commercial use licenses.  It does not hurt to go play with the G9 yourself and see how it works for you.

No corrective stuff for weird bends, for me G9 bends worse than G8 in the legs and certain "normal" poses that worked in G3 or G8, when I use G9 I get wonky.  Part of this is due to the fact that are enough subtile little changes and a few major that G9 takes a bit of a different approch for me to use.

    kyoto kid said:

...OK so I installed the update, I checked to make sure all  the paths are correct, then proceeded to download and install what I purchased. However, when I exited, noticed a couple folders had disappeared from my Windows desktop including the one with all the shortcuts to my 3D programmes (which includes links to other software besides Daz). I did looked to see if it had been  moved to another area of the desktop as occasionally happens (it wasn't) after which launched a full search for the folder to see if it was moved elsewhere but that returned no results.

Now as with any new install there is the usual Windows popup that mentions changes will be made to the computer, but I never ever have seen anything like this happen before in all dozen years I have been doing this.

So not only am I unable to open either the 4.21 General or 4.21 Public Release from the desktop, I also cannot open Daz 3.1, Hexagon, Blender, Carrara, Bryce, or other software that had shortcuts in that folder as well.

    Wonderful bug there.

That wouldn't be down to the DIM update, as far as I can see. Did you check the Recycling Bin? Also, you should have links for the applications in the Start Menu

  • The I Miss the Old Days Complaint Thread

    ...late night (early morning?) complaint:

    Well that was somewhat annoying

I needed to update the Install Manager so I could download and install a few purchases I made. All of that worked fine, but after I closed it, I noticed that the folder with all my shortcuts to the graphics software I use was deleted from my desktop.,*poof" gone (I made sure it wasn't moved elsewhere on the desktop and even did a search which turned up nothing).

Never have seen anything like this before and it makes no sense that a the new version of the IM would seriously mess with the Windows desktop like this. So now I have to go find all the executables, start them manually one by one, and rebuild the shortcut library, as well as save a backup on a USB, as I am now concerned this may happen the next time and every time the IM updates.

Serious fail here by development as it seems it wasn't thoroughly tested before being released.

I wish we had a choice whether we wanted to update it or not, as several times in the past all my install paths were overwritten with the default IM ones and on a couple occasions, my stored password was deleted as well and the .ini file was moved from its proper location.

It's late, I'm frustrated and disgusted, I'll deal with it when I get up.

  • Brand New Graphic Novel Made in Daz Studio!

Apologies FirstBastion and ArtAngel for the delay in my response. It'll be so nice if one day we can do this full time instead of having projects at work to worry about laugh

Firstly, FirstBastion we're not sure about the sustainability right now. There are many, many projects currently in the pipeline, and first and perhaps most importantly, we do this because we abolsutely love telling stories. Writing and art is our creative outlet and even if it's ultimately not sustainable then we will continue to do much of what we already have planned. Like many others I'm sure, we hope that it becomes something more but we're also realistic. Hopefully we can continue to improve and your feedback on this forum will undoubtedly be a great help to us going forward. Early signs are encouraging but it is very early days.

ArtAngel i'm sorry but although we are looking at creating the paperback version soon, I don't currently have a page count for the dimensions you asked for. I will try and find that out soon because I'm very interested in a lot of the points you raised in your post. And I was very interested in your comments about your own ebook. I have also published another ebook before as a novel and I know exactly how you feel! I am just in the final weeks/months of the final edit of it after having taken it down off amazon for about two years as I wasn't happy with it. It was written initially just as a bedtime story for my kids when they were little and I would read it to them at night so at the time it really wasn't ready but I felt it was important to take it down now (even though I was already well into writing a follow up) to try and get it absolutely right. Hopefully it works out! Thank you so much for your advice and I will let you know about the page counts soon.

  • What is the deal with all the damaged/defaced warehouses, etc.?

    Cybersox said:

As the title said, what is the deal with so many PAs making products that only come in damaged/defaced/destroyed versions?  Lately there seem to be a lot more items that I would have bought if they had come in with a new/active use state version included, but have ended up passing on because I'm tired of having to create new textures and rebuild sections of products whose prices are already escalating by the month.  I mean, is there really a need for there to be nearly a dozen abandoned warehouses with partial ceilings, shattered floors and plants inside them in the DAZ store alone (double that number if one adds in Rendos catalog)?  If so, why are the three that I keep going back to use the three that are sold in working order and actually set up with stocked inventory?  (And that's made worse by the fact that two of those came from the same vendor, Ironman13, while the other set, from Stonemason, isn't set up for Iray.)  The latest briar under my bonnet is Lantio's new atrium set, which has a great design but appears to only come covered in a faux-Logan's Run plantgrowth version. I realize that dystopian is considered cool with the gaming crowd, but just because you can cover every surface with grime and graffitti, the end effect is that it makes it far more identifiable and therefore less versatile.  And don't let me even get started on all the vendors who've taken to working their name into the product in highly annoying fashion...

You might consider putting in a request in the Product Request forum.

  • [SOLVED] Subtle Distortion of Genesis 8 and 8.1 Female Figures

    PerttiA said:

Before doing it the hard way, you could try loading the "Genesis 8.1 Female Dev Load" into an empty scene, Zero the Figure and check the "Currently Used" list, the list should now show the dials that have their current value not at their default value (value of the dial is shown in white) - One of them should be the culprit.

The only items listed under currently used are the ones shown in the attached image, which were included in the dialog when I saved the modified assets as Richard suggested.

However, when I compared this to the Genesis 8.1 Female Dev Load on my old PC, I noticed a discrepancy; the morph "3DU London Age (in years)" does not appear under Currently Used for the dev figure on my old PC. I found that morph in the parameters via search. It is listed there with a value of 9.00 as well, however, the number is gray instead of white.

The fact that it shows up under Currently Used only on the new PC is confusing. Is that significant, or just a red herring?

  • Is G8/G8.1 abandoned?

    TheMysteryIsThePoint said:

I couldn't agree more with this. Probably the most important thing that keeps me from leaving the DAZ ecosystem altogether are the JCMs that are better than anything I am able to do myself, that deform a G8 so beautifully. G9s noodle-knees are as bad as another app's characters that made me close that app and never open it again. That was the deal-breaker for me, and the things at which G9s are actually marginally better wer just that: marginal, and not compelling enough to get me excited enough to re-design my characters and base them on it. If there were something truly innovative about G9, I would have to consider it, but it just doesn't solve any problem. A solution in search of one, like @wolf359 said...

Up until this point, Daz's characters were above all else as far as functional figures go, and much much cheaper than turbosquid's offerings, but while this is well-intentioned for content creators; it eventually ends up leaving the non-PA behind several generations with a figure that's comparable to V4 instead of the current 8/8.1 generation as far as anatomical accuracy is concerned!

What would help is if Daz themselves produced an update via G9 essentials, with at least an equivalent base JCM setup as G8/8.1, that way improvements from 3rd party PAs can continue, but earlier, and with much more frequency as they'll have a stronger and more focused base to work with!

Because as it stands, (from what I've read, here) PAs are having a tough time with it as it is... So the end user ends up with 'Ole, noodle knees until maybe a year or so, until KHImage can fix G9's bends, at least for me that is, as I heavily relied on their anatomically accurate corrective/JCM morphs ever since Genesis 2!

Also starting with Genesis 1 is the ability to interactively define the level of SubD directly in Studio. Blender will be a different story. You'll have to check out the Blender forum here at Daz - they are quite enthusiastic and full of help. I've used both the fan-made and the official bridges to Blender and thought they both worked well. But Daz Studio with Iray makes for some really nice renders!
