A Thread for Items with the "Editorial License"
My, this is poking at The House of the Mouse with TWO sticks. Not only is there a Nightcrawler clone, but some of those sales page thumbnails look A LOT like one of the most popular Star Wars villains, Admiral Thrawn. Please tell me that white uniform isn't in the bundle? Sorry, I didn't bother to look at The product page.
Anybody else hate . . .it's funny on deviant art few years ago I submitted some renders to a group only to rejected because they thought it looked real like a photo and not daz art provided links to all products to prove wasn't. But yeah it is funny now too with AI everyone thinks everything is AI made now because that's what's always in the news and such and so much of it, same with cgi some people think in movies and tv it's always been cgi used in effects and I see people commenting about poor cheap cgi in movies in old and really old movies and tv that used practical effects and glass paintings for large scenes like American Werewolf In London, Star Wars and even old black and white movies/tv

I am not sure if there is anything in this bundle that is not inspired by existing items or looks.
Even though they don't have Editorial License stamped on them due to some differences it just feels cheap to me.Kurt Wagner (x-men Harlequin) shapes, outfit and skins, even the poses look straight out of the comics
Tom Hiddleston look alike (debatable but with the long hair it looks straight out of Loki for me)
Star Wars Grand Admiral Thrawn outfits, Just missing the rank insignia's and other minor details,
Drizzt Do'Urden fantasy armor. You are right about the name, I grew up with the dutch comics where he was called "Harlekein" and for some reason my brain did the literal translation

I looked up the Drizzt Do'Urden as I was unfamiliar with the name. I found a rabbit hole in the Forgotten Realms Wiki and a rather fascinating character. Made me take another look at the Drow that I had otherwise ignored. But, I have a question for anyone, moderator or not. Can a named character in Dungeons and Dragons have issue with Editorial Licenses, to include their clothing and swords? I did like these items before I had read about them and would like to know for sure.
Let's just say that about everything legal involving D&D campaigns, settings and art is a huge blank at the moment.
D&D was originally owned by TSR. Wizards of the Coast bought TSR about 20 years ago (and then had the specific TSR brand name expire 3 years ago).
TSR and later Wizards of the Coast had a certain blank license for creators to make D&D stuff, including campaigns or settings, figurines, fan fiction, etcetera, since freely allowing all those things added to the popularity of the D&D game.
Wizards of the Coast then tried to one-sided alter the license agreement, demanding very steep fees. Which resulted in massive player backlash, so they withdrew that (for now).
Wizards of the Coast also managed to majorly peeve off the original creators of several official campaigns and official D&D art works, and are now in a couple of legal battles surrounding those, including the original Greyhawk campaign, but also the more well known Dragonlance and Forgotten Realms campaign settings. So, who owns the rights to Drizzt Do'Urden and his signature dual scimitars is kinda up in the air. Even the latest adaptations of this figure are clearly based upon the first descriptions and the first artworks for this character, and it seems the case is going pretty strongly in the direction that WotC doesn't have the full rights in the first place, and basically signed away any rights they might've had with the open licenses in the second place. It's actually fairly probable that they will abandon these old campaign settings in the future entirely, to replace them with new campaign settings, art and characters that are tighter under their own control. Just wait for the threethousandumptieth edition to be released in a couple of years for this to happen.Wagner 9Websoul said:

As with most things, I think it would ultimately depend on whether the celebrity in question 1) noticed your game, and 2) thought it was worth lawyering up over. Whatever the legal status, they probably have more money than you and legal stuff is expensive, so you'll wind up on the losing end.
That's the problem for 2 reasons.
1. I'd rather just not have a situation where there's a chance of legal battle at all.
2. If there's any viable case at all then they will fight - there's been many cases that seem petty because the defendant is obligated to legally protect their brand or risk losing it, even if it's just a small group of fans making a fan project. Someone like Tom Hiddleston may be so far out of reach of an indie game developer's social circles, but if you're selling a product with his likeness in it then his lawyer is going to contact you.
Even if I could fly under the radar and get away with having the likeness of Tom Hiddleston in my game, the fantasy armour that comes with today's release is an uncanny likeness to the armour of Drizzt, a distinctive popular character in D&D. The space officer costume is distinctively star wars empire officer uniform. I don't know D&D so didn't notice the costume likeness. I had it in my cart, thinking it just to be a great fantasy outfit.
Based on the number of products that seem to be making it into the store with interactive licenses, which would suggest original content, that are actually minor modifications on distinctive outfits from established fiction, I have to navigate what feels like a legal minefield to avoid accidental copyright infringement.
A Thread for Items with the "Editorial License"Naturally, I have no personal problem with Star Wars themed items under Editorial License, but each to their own... I'm more bothered about the lack of sidearm (empty holster) and no headwear (although I think the character that "inspired" the uniform only wears a helm when wearing combat armour and doesn't wear a cloth cap when in dress uniform).

Drizzt Do'Urden fantasy armor.Kurt Wagner is Nightcrawler. Or was, did his code name change at some time?
Thanks for the ID on the science fiction outfit, I thought it looked like a Star Wars one, but haven't kept up with the universe since Disney took it over.
Thankfully my gift card money is low and reserved. I do like the base character.

...The blades do not rotate at all. I already looked on the Net for ways to bypass the thermostat but could find nothing for this model.
If the blades aren't able to rotate at all, like if you can poke a finger or a pencil past the grill and flick the blades (with the power off of course), normally they should rotate freely even if the electrical parts are frelled... if they are locked in place, the bearings are fried... or the windings... 99% of the time it's the bearings though... the lubricant wears out and heat starts to build up, eventually cooking out whatever acts as the lubricant and leaving behind a varnish-like substance that eventually seizes up the whole motor... that's why sometimes a motor might run slow, but it runs, then when you turn it off and on it won't rotate anymore... the newly transformed grease to glue formerly known as lubricant is now cooled and set, fusing the motor shaft in place within the bearing... also by that point the bearings will often go "out of round" and even if one could remove the bearings and clean them (it's possible, I've done that, it's stupid because it's generally not worth the effort) and relubricate them, the bearings will most likely not be precision anymore and when they get warm, they'll seize up intermittently, regardless if they are lubricated well.
As far as Consumer Reports, one has to view their findings with perspective... They are generally trustworthy, but for factors like longevity of a product, they'll most likely use methods that accelerate wear and tear... which may not necessarily be the greatest method, but without a time machine, it's usually pretty much the only way to guess at what a product will perform like two or three years down the line... so generally if a product is kinda new, they are probably going to be running or using it based on what they have concluded is a normal amount of usage say in a year, times whatever their lifetime target is... so like if it's something most consumers use say a couple of times a week, they take that total times fifty two...
Or if the product uses major components that have been around for a while it's based on the past performance of those components... it's not perfect but it gives one an idea... but of course an individual item may be a lemon or been mishandled in shipping or even the company may have changed vendors after a certain point, etc, etc... One of the frustrating things about CR is more often than not, the particular item they tested isn't necessarily available or cheap... I can't count the number of times I've found a good item reviewed, but the only one I can find has a different item or model number... so say the item is fairly new and its model number is #12345 and it's $200, the only item I'll be able to find is #12346... it mostly similar, but the handle looks different and it's a different color... is that the difference or is the motor now different and thus it's not the same?... If I look for it online the only place I'll be able to find that exact model number will be on Amazon or a specialty shop where the price be $300 plus shipping...Thats annoying.
But generally, if I can get the actual model/item for the target price I usually find CRs findings accurate... and there's another good thing they do, which is update findings... like for example if they reviewed an item with a Samsung power source and the manufacturer now uses a Crapco adapter, they'll usually note that if it still has the same model number.
Either way it's still way more accurate than other online reviews... like forget Amazon where people give great reviews because of color or quick shipping... okay, so you are giving it four stars because it arrived on time and not on fire?... great. Or you are rating it one star because you ordered an indoor product that caught on fire because you used it outdoors and it got rained on...? Ugh.
Anyway... that was an overly long reply... sorry about the fan and the accelerated wear and tear on your eyeballs.
So apparently they have these Amazon Vine reviewers. And people don't trust products with zero reviews, so product makers will just send products to these Vine reviewers in exchange for their "honest" review of the product. So now there are hundreds of "honest" reviews of the product from people who received it free. I don't know how one gets on the list to receive the expensive appliances and consumer electronic devices free but I doubt you get there by saying they don't work. Anyway, one of my early experiences with these Vine reviewers is a guy who declared the new Denon receiver was a great product with the one downside being you have to control it with an app on a phone because it doesn't include a regular remote control. Never mind that the remote control can be seen in the pictures. Never mind that I have the same remote control beside me right now. It's as if he did the whole review by reading the promotional material for the device and didn't bother to open the box and look inside. I don't know if it's even possible to set up the app or receiver without using the remote control at some point. Somehow he managed to determine it sounds great though.
This may have annoyed me as much as the C-NET reviewer who said one of the downsides of the video camera he was reviewing was that it didn't have any manual controls. This, I was reading as I was manually adjusting the focus on the same camera. However, neither of these things annoyed me as much as the Amazon reviewer who declared that the recorder had poor video quality when you set the recorder quality to the lowest setting. Never mind the five other settings. Perhaps the same person turns the television brightness to the lowest setting and returns it to the store because the picture is too dark. Maybe they turn their volume down and complain that they can't hear anything. I don't know.
It got to a point that I only trust negative reviews if many people have the same complaint about the same thing and none of them have the same writing style. And I don't trust any positive reviews with exclamation marks. If they're this happy!!!!!! over a toothbrush then they probably work for the company who made the product.
I don't always trust negative reviews because suspicious me thinks they might be from the competition. That said, the first thing I look at is the negative reviews because I want to know the complaints first. Oftentimes I will find a negative review that exposes a flaw I cannot live with. I bought some cages ($150.00 a pop ). . . (medical housing for birds) and read a negative review about how flimsy they were. I thought maybe this reviewer is the competition, because they look solid and the details infer such. Bought haldf a dozen. They come in a box you have to assemble. And during assembly, I thought these thing seem to be flimsy. After I assembled them and used them for two weeks I sent them back. Took me three hours to, disassemble them, clean them and tear down boxes to fit them. And had to empty dog cages from my van to accomodate the boxes, drive tio UPS and return them. I should have embraced the negative reviews. The cages I was replacing were old and faded and looke weakened, but were far stronger than these by a long run.
Heart of DarknessAlso, I am not receiving notices when someone posts a reply, despite the fact I have the star higlighted gold. I will be checking this thread from time-to-time.

Vanishing Point is an interesting choice for Daz store. A lot of unmarked Star Trek fan art, some Poser stuff, some real world stuff, some weirdness. I like some of the models, even if the ones I like are older.
Weekend sale might be nice - There are a few items I missed the first time, but it will cost a little more. I'm hoping for sweeteners.
I don't know if this has been noted, you can't buy the same item more than once any more. The site gives a "this item can't be added to cart" notice and now routes to the item in your product library. I thnk that's a recent change. I don't think it did that at March Madness.
i'm really happy to see Vanishing Point here, they have some lovely houses and such that only need a little attention for more close-up rendering. And they do mention on almost every item store page that the models were originally designed for mid- to long distance renders, so one knows what one's getting. Prices are also more than fair. Got two wonderful derelict barns that had been on my Rendo WL for ages!
Agreed. I'm also glad to see them here. My wishlist just grew by some 30 items from their store. I was, however, a bit surprised to see them here. IIRC they were here some time ago and it seemed like it didn't go well because they left after a few months.
Hmm, interesting that days after the 'Welcome VP' sale most (if not all) the VP items in the DAZ store are also still available at the 'other' store.
Star Wars Renders 2013 +I picked up the Galactic Dancer outfit the other day as I needed something to trigger a sale, and I figured it was at least something I could have fun subjecting my characters to.
And I guess that while my characters aren't supposed to be part of the Star Wars universe, the renders are still enough on theme to share in this thread.
It took some conversion (as most of my characters aren't on G9), but I started with Whisky, whose measurements mean she's already reluctantly familiar with uncomfortable underwear:

And because it's me, I was also obviously going to think it was funny to put it on Jade as well - call it a satire or something:
