  • Too many morphs or should I just give up on this?

    Those look pretty nice!!

Geoshells are definitely very useful, especially if you have the ability to paint seamlessly to get the right effect. (I cannot do that yet. Attempts to learn in Blender have failed.)  Those "pants" look a little tight, though. Great for leggings. I'd have to ask you to change your clothes if you came into the office like that. ;-)

However, there's a particular mermaid tail that uses geoshells. I got it and found it very very hard to work with.

Yes, I like the geoshells best for cartoon outlining. (The manga shaders were a real break through for me.) I've seen them for makeup as well, and that's a neat idea except I like using resources and saving the skin that's created for later use.

Now those wrinkles, would they show up as an actual wrinkle using pwtoon without the use of bump/distortion if you turn the model to the side? Or posed it differently?

I once tried to drape a goeshell for giggles. That ended very badly. LOL!

  • How to I find out if my mesh is problematic for DAZ?

I had thought of the shader/face double-sided situation, but I was also seeking a bit of depth. As I largely work with pwtoon, it's not feasible to use bump or anything like that.

I decreased collision to .1 and it's working pretty fast considering I've got half the computer I did when I was in this forum last. I was worried I was going to have to change the mesh somehow. As far as I can tell the mesh is clean, but I've never tried anything this advanced before so what do I know. I also, however, subdivided the model because I didn't like how the other was draping. Too many bumps and triangular edges.  I may experiment with a triangulated mesh in the future. I've always liked how the triangulated meshes drape.

Normals appear to be out but also facing the right direction. I've had a lot of fun twisting them around in Blender. But I like to unwrap. I've unwrapped some old model doozies just because I was bored.

With the increased mesh it's draping reasonably, and I've been able to fix a joint easier than before. But i admit i dislike the thought of there being too many vertices. It is what it is.

For me, its not just to get to that end result, but also figuring out how to make that end result happen. Like last year when I figured out how to bruteforce Sketchy Toon for Iray into making stuff that looked like PWtoon, or like when I figured out how to make great toon images with dzDefault's toon shaders, a shader set most people just flat out ignored. I wouldn't have gotten that kind of satisfaction had I just fed a bunch of my renders into program and said "Okay, make these look cool!"

I'm like this, too. I've been learning Blender the past few months, which is why I stopped posting. I love/hate the shader engine. I'm starting to understand it better now, and have started experimenting on days I don't feel like working on sculpting the bits for my project.

    vrba79,

All I can say is that one man's gold is another man's junk. Whether the cat is black or white, does it really matter? So long as it can catch the mice. Live and let live.

This navel gazing is ruining a good Friday vibe! To wit, as the King would say, a little less conversation, a little more action, please. laugh

Yeah. I recently installed PWToon and it still worked. It just doesn't work well with G9! The eyes have a weird transparency issue I cannot solve. I suspect this is a bug, but because 3DL is no longer a priority, they didn't look into fixing it.

guys ,  pwToon still working with new version of DAZ studio ? @vrba79 do you still have pwToon installed in your machine?

I`m thinking about  generating bunches of complex shadows (which I can also use as masks) plus color id  for postwork flexibilities  . If I remember correctly pwToon + free automated Lighting scripts , faster than any solution I`ve ever tried .

And since my old DAZ studio installer already gone , I wonder if I can still using pwToon

    Thanks

    @vrba79 :

Some of us are still here.  I read the thread almost every day (when time permits), but don't have the current time for creating new NPR work to participate.

Also, love the work you have been doing lately with the Iray Sketchy NPR shaders.  I purchased that one too, but have not had time to play with it yet (or PWToon, MangaStyle, VisualStyle, and OsoToon I also purchased).

So, to help my favorite thread along at least by one post  --  Here are a couple of very old NPR I have'nt posted here :

!!! NOPE !!!  --  Forum will not allow me to upload images right now, so I guess it still isn't fixed.

That is a great way to help diminish an image thread  --  Will try again next month...

  • Help with Getting DIM to install where I ask it to.

Help Please!!! I have been fighting with DIM  for years and it never cooperates. I have a new computer  build so I jst placed the "MY LibraryFolder " in a folder on my desktop. I used the default directory settings for the 64 Bit Software Base thinking that this is where the actual DAZ Studio Exe. file , or program would be installed. There is in fact now a DAZ 3D directory under C:/ Program Files Which contains directories named DAZ3DIM1,DazCentral1 and DAZStudio4. I selected my desktop folder which contains My DAZ 3D Library as the content directory, so I thought all my content would happily be placed in that folder. No No, Some how DIM ended up having all kinds of diferent locations selected as Content Database path, Content Base path, 64 bit software base,  32 bit software base ......

Even if I try to make sure that my desktop folder containing My DAZ 3D Library is selected right before I do a new install, files end up in a directory called "My DAZ 3D Library/Applications" Many things still work fine such as installing characters, but I could not get PWToon to install correctly without manually moving things under "My DAZ 3D Library/Applications". I still cannot get Fluidos II to install correctly at all.  DAZ Central is cunfusing as well so I have "DAZ 3D" directories all over the place and I never selected the places for different installations.

I know I jacked this up, but can anyone give a bit of advice about to unscrew this mess? Thank you!!

I don't normally do serious or "finished" pieces. I'm usually in it for the fun.

Before I retired I rarely had enough spare time to spend as much time as I wanted in 3D, so I would normally use the time to do quick tests on purchased items knocking out "first drafts" more than anything I'd think was worth posting. I normally do toon renderings and I spent years running almost everything through PWToon.

Here's a couple of tests I did way back when Stonemason's Castle Ruins came out (2011/2012). I liked the quick tests, but never took the time to "finish" them (e.g. add footprints in the snow, frosty breaths from the giants, etc.).

This is the kind of stuff I enjoyed doing, just for the fun of it, and for the quick little rush you get from thinking up an idea and seeing what it looks like on the screen a few minutes later; it's why I love DAZ Studio, there's nothing better for doing that (for me, at least, if I could sketch better that might be faster and cheaper).

Wow nice! Tks for sharing! At that time I probably still made short stupid animations in OGL to enjoy my friends;) Rendering in 3DL was out of question. It could have been a Mac G3 at the time...

    I have a quick question.
Does PWToon work with the latest version of Daz Studio?
I'd like to update mine (currently using v. 4.15), but my current projects use and rely heavily on PWToon, so I'd like to know bofore doing it.

I admire people who manage animation in Daz - I tried once, and realized it just wasn't something I had the mindset for, or 'the eye', I suppose... or the patience.  As a sidenote, the bridge would largely provide an ambient light, or a nice IBL sort of all-round illumination, but I have no idea what that would do to render times!

Thanks for your reply; I think I'd need to use 3DL and some other lighting, which really cranks up the render times for my simple animation. I remember puttering briefly with similar lighting almost a decade ago, but since I was using a lot of PWToon at the time, I found that Uberenvironment worked best for me. I'm hoping to try out Filament with some HDRI products I have once DAZ Studio 5 comes out (I'm using Macs and while I've tested Filament a few times on my machines, it's awkward and when something doesn't appear to work, I can't be sure if it's the product's fault, my fault -- mostly likely -- or running Windows in a vertual machine). Theoretically, Filament should render as fast or faster than OGL once it's implemented and provide better transparency and lighting options than OGL. Hopefully it won't be much longer...

Hey all, I like never post in the forums but going through the NPR and some of the other shader help topics helped me finally get a workflow down for the style I wanted. I do book covers and am a writer and I wanted not only to do my own cozy covers but maybe do some short comic panels for promos. Anywho, I wanted to share because without these forums I wouldn't have gotten to this!
So, this is mostly done using the PWtoon in combo with the free JSflat, free geoshell, crescents free pw shaders, and the free soft tint. Basically what Juvesatriani and Cresent recommend in their posts.
Then I did some minimal photoshop work. I posterized the background only, added a color lookup and a camera raw to tie everything together.

That turned out nice. Good job!

  • Using Daz for comics - Q-32

3DL is defintely the render engine for choice for doing cartoon-shaded comic art. VSS, the discontinued PwToon and the free but formidable dzDefaultToon are all excellent ways to achieve comic-style art with Daz Studio.

This pic is an example of why I started to move away from Sketchy Toon for Iray. I wanted the skirt Joy is wearing to be shiny, but when trying to use Sketchy Toon, you can either have a consistent cartoony look, or you get to have specular highlights. You don't get to have it both ways. This isn't a problem with my dear old friend PwToon.

     vrba79,

We have a good representation of NPR techniques, wouldn't you say? Phloki3D's technique using Octane, which he graciously shared, reminds me of juvesatriani notes for !JSFlat. Even Artini's use of Unity has been very interesting. Speaking of PWToons, I do find folks asking in the Commons forum about Daz NPR add-ons. The examples you and others shared lately should be inspiring.

    Cheers!
