I can agree with a lot of the sentiment in this thread.  I just did a count up and I have 63 Genesis 8 pro bundles and a lot of Genesis 3 pro bundles that I got free when I first came back to Daz after a long break.  I think I've bought two pro bundles in the past five months.

I do have to wonder though what it is like for someone coming new to Daz - they could build a small library of core figures, clothing and hair from a huge choice of pro bundle content, a lot of it often on sale.  Perhaps part of the reason that I don't buy a lot of content lately is that when I start building a scene and realise that I need something, I can search through content that I bought years ago for Michael 3, Victoria 3, Victoria 4 etc and then adapt it with iray shaders to look good enough for a one-use still image render.

Right now, I can't see what Daz can add to a Genesis 9 figure to make me want to buy it, given the existing technology within Daz Studio - it really would have to be a massive leap forward.  But, when they do eventually start a new Genesis series, I plan to buy a couple of core bundles and then be much more selective in what I buy after that - likely adding just a few PA figures to the mix instead of the core Daz figures.

Agreed, wish I could spend more time in there than i do.

It's funny seeing some of the reactions to VR (virtual reality) in this thread and to be honest, it sounds like me to a point before i got my headset last year. Since then my Steam game library has increased to over a hundred games, I don't play any non VR games any more and I get into VR almost daily (I am typing this right now in my virtual beach room).

I truly wish DAZ would get involved more into VR other than avatars for VRchat. I already use DAZ models in other VR apps (which is amazing working with lifesize victoria), but would love a VR option for DS.

i just preordered a new HP Reverb G2 and if it lives up to the hype, it will be a game changer for me.

Shortened her hair on the right side to eliminate (I hope!) clipping... gonna be a busy week, so I suspect this is my "final" entry... but i'm still interested in advice, comments, and critiques.

Shortening the hair really changes her look.  It is softening and eliminating some of the shadows.  It isn't always easy to deal with hair clipping.

Not that I'll have the time (or skill) to do anything about it, but do you have any suggestions on how do deal with the issue? I played around a bit trying to move her hair without shortening - but those still had clipping issues except moving the hair back, which totally changed the look and practically eliminated the shadows all together...

maybe move/mess/add/change the lighting? Right now there's just the HDRI (stock) and a single spot, coming from her right and above...

Hair can be tricky and I can understand you not wanting to lose the shadows the hair created on her face.

A deformer might have moved those strands just enough to prevent the clipping.  A push modifier might work.  No one tool seems to work in every instance.  Sometimes, if you have the time and patience, you have to experiment with different things to see what might work in any given situation.

1. We did succeed in making a new .cr2 to load the original plus the new morphs, so that is doable.

2. The Rachael morph needs a little more work about the eyes and eyelashes. {I'm seriously not good with those lashes}

@ mic685_ddf880de57   When you can get the eyes, lashes fixed and also applied on the Rachael figure ... if you send the mass over to Hexagon, rename it to Victoria 4.2 then ship it back over to a Fresh Load of Victoria 4.2 - make the morph. Then run the script again but this time make it to have a new name. Hopefully that is how we can get all the morphs together.

It certainly will not kill your GPU, it will run at the same clocks and temps as it always does when you run Iray. So play around as much as you like. I monitor my temps with with software like MSI Afterburner, which I also use to control the GPU fans. I have it set so my fans kick in harder and quicker in order to keep my temperatures down. I always advise users to do track their temps when using Iray or gaming.

Morphs that are not HD will not show any additional detail when dialing up subD. Dialing up subdivision increases the mesh density, that is all it does. So if imagine for a moment a ball, and this ball is made of 100 polygons, it is going to look blocky. If you increase subdivision, it will increase exponentially. The first step up will be minor but still visibly smoother. The next one will have a lot more density and look quite smooth. If you have carved details in the ball, it depends on what subdivision you sculpted them at. To sculpt a fine detail like a vein you need the subdivision to be high enough to do it. It is almost impossible to sculpt details like that on a base mesh.

So if you do not use any HD morphs, you will not see much improvement beyond subdivision 2. It might make edges smoother at higher resolutions, but not increase fine detail very much. The HD morphs can only replace their respective normal map. Like Victoria 8's HD is made for her, so you will not need Victoria 8 normal maps in conjunction with her HD. Beyond that, you are mixing and matching things, and results will vary. That is the more fun part of Daz, the models are very modular and you can mix and match whatever you want to your heart's content.

So the only way to know how things will turn put is to experiment a bit with what you want to do. It is going to depend a lot on your render resolution and how close to the camera your model is. If you are not in a close up, odds are that you do not need EITHER normals nor HD.

Post-Apocalyptic is an okay theme, but it's not one that I do. Not in the Mad Max sense, anyway.

The outfits for Celani 8 seem more tantasy/post-apoc. I guess the sci-fi wrasslin was only a temporary thing, and now we're headed back into fantasy-land?

Just thinking back to Genesis 3. Victoria 7 came with a little more daring Post-Apoc outfit (oh no, human skin, the horror), and Gia 7 did the Walking Dead Michonne outfit with the Wall Ranger.  Celani 8 is deifnitely not in the same apocalypse as the Wall Ranger, IMO.

If I were more into this theme, maybe I'd be more interested. It's just a lot to buy for only a few things I'd end up using.

My morph pack list is pretty extensive, but you may be able to 'make do' with other morphs if you don't have one or more of the morphs listed below.  FWSA Finley and Victoria 7 are pretty much essential, though...

This should give you a decent starting point, and you are of course free to make your own adjustments.  I'm sure that others may be able to improve on this formula - Please share with the class if you are so inclined!

I used Finley's skin textures as well, so it's probably easiest to just load Finley and then start dialing/adjusting from there.

Note that some morph dials control other morph dials, so if you see 'extra' values, this shouldn't be a problem.  Just make sure the ones listed above are set to the right values once you are done.

It might not hurt to do an Edit > Figure > Rigging > Adjust Rigging To Shape... when you are done.

I think that's it.  As for skin adjustments (all of them, plus the lips)...

Translucency Weight 0.15

Translucency Color: 0.65 - 0.00 - 0.00

SSS Reflectance Tint 1.00 - 0.93 - 0.87

Again, adjust to taste!

For the face makeup, I swapped out the default 'Base Color' map with FACEMU09_1001.jpg for the purple eye shadow.  Note that if you don't assign this manually, you'll need to go back and change the translucency color, weight, and reflectance tint again, hence why I suggest assigning this manually.  You could also change the Translucency Weight, Color, and Reflectance for the Skin and Lips after you've picked your makeup and lip options...

For the lips, I went with FWSAFinleyFaceLips02-10001.jpg (base) and FSWAFinleyFaceLipsSSS_1001.jpg for the Translucency map.  Use whichever ones you like of course!

For the eye color, I went with FWSAFinleyEyes03_1007.jpg (purple color)

 

Again, consider this a baseline.  Feel free to adjust to taste!  Also, as I noted above, if you are missing a few of these morphs, there may be other morphs in your collection that might get you to where you want to go with the face and body shape, if the results aren't quite where you want them...

@andya There's definitely something odd in your blender settings then. I see a strange "black" skin in your render. I mean Victoria 8 is what we used for testing the volumetric skin together with other characters and they all look good with the default settings. You just have to let the plugin update for minimal requirements. It may be that we overlooked something though.

What blender version are you using ? The plugin is tested with the 2.83 stable release. Also can you please make a render with cycles and full global illumination settings ? This will check if the issue is in the render settings.

Another useful test would be if someone else can check Victoria 8 with diffeo. She works fine for me and the others at diffeomorphic.

@Padone, thanks for the suggestions. 

I don't want to hijack this thread to discussing how to improve the results I get using a fresh download of Blender (2.83.3, portable zip) and leaving the settings as provided (N.B. 'full global illumination' is not selected).  I am certain there are many ways to improve them, for both plugins, and enabling the full global illumination light path preset is very likely one such way).  Instead, my intention was to share the results obtained in Blender with the bare minimum of user input.  I think one advantage of Iray in Daz Studio is that you can often get a pretty good render with the standard settings.  Now that Daz has released the 'official' Blender bridge, some people may think of trying Blender for the first time.  As Blender newcomers, they may well not make any changes to the default settings initially, whereas you or I would.  So I was interested to see what results they might get in that case. 

If there are particular settings required to get the best results from either plugin, I believe they should be clearly documented as necessary, or enforced by the plugin itself.  (The Daz Importer does not enforce the selection of full global illumination for me, and I don't see it mentioned in the docs but perhaps I missed it.)

To stay somewhat on topic, here is a Blender render  - the result of 5 minutes updating the materials on Victoria 8 from the Daz Importer, face/lips/ears only (full global illumination not selected, rendered in 21 seconds to 100 samples).

"OK, I have tried dialing all manner of combinations, and I cannot nail down the Daphne look. She seems to have a fairly simple face but getting her to look right in 3D just might be impossible. Tj I'm not having any luck replicating what you did either...........*sigh.

No worries!  I wasn't very happy with my 'stand in' so I took a more serious stab at Daphne.  What do you think of this one?

She's based on FWSA Finley for Victoria 7, with some additional morphs.  I was trying to keep the angled eyes without her looking Asian, if that makes sense...

Also, I used the mesh grabber tool to adjust the hair so some of it draped over the head band better, while pushing in other parts of the hair underneath the headband, in an attempt to clean up the headband area so that I wouldn't need to do a lot of post work/edit out a bunch of strands that were poking thru the headband.  I didn't do any post work to this image, other than to apply the gradient background behind the render after resizing the image and adding my sig.

Finley for Victoria 7 is now added to my wishlist, considering the second attempt looks very close to that of the cartoon counterpart.

Saving them as png will loose information; they are enormous because of all the information they contain. How much it will matter (if at all) will vary between rendered images.

Compared side by side at 100% in Photoshop? Yes. In an actual render? Not likely. I'm super anal when it comes to image fidelity and I've never noticed a difference. 

On a separate note, I took a look at Babina 8's normals and they seem much smaller in file size than other normal .tifs that I remember...I wonder if they are now compressing their .tifs. (Yeah, they have to be because Victoria 7's normal .tifs are 48mb compared to Babaina 8's at ~3mb...so what I said above would only apply to uncompressed .tifs.)

That idea of yours looks very close to what Daphne should look like.  I may consider this idea when I have some extra money.  I already do have the Lollipop Hair, so the hairband is taken care of.  I do have a scarf, but it was a bigger one and it was a freebie on another site.

So all I really need is Ruby, The Girl 7, Aiko 7, the Layered Fringe hair, and the Super dress and leggings.  I may already have restaurant server shoes, as I believe I have a waitress uniform in my inventory, unless it's an underestimation.

So now that we got Daphne taken care of, all we need is to find out how to do Shaggy and Fred and even Scooby.

I wasn't all that happy with my previous attempt, so I gave it another go, using FSWA Finley for Victoria 7 along with some other morph tweaking:

This looks a bit closer to the cartoon art IMHO, for the face (body is a bit wider ATM).  What do you think?

 

I'm having a devil of a time figuring out how to use any of these - seems they all require figures that are only available for purchse? I can't seem to find any that will work with only the free content you get with Daz. Paid content is a non-starter for me as I have no income at the moment thanks to all this crap going on. I'm not trying to do animation or anything, I just need a variety of characters in TMP and/or TWOK uniforms in a couple of different natural poses (walking, standing at a console, standing and talking, etc.) to populate still set renders like the one attached (which was made in Blender). The reference image I used in creating the attached render shows some good examples of what I mean. I'd greatly appreciate any help anyone could provide.

I was about to call you out on lifting pictures from seanr on scifi-meshes to use for your own nefarious purposes...lol.  I enjoyed your bridge renders back in the early 2000s, and am glad to see you're back at work!  Daz just released a free (at the moment--I'd grab it immediately) Daz-Blender bridge that might be of interest to you, in terms of rendering Poser/Daz figures within blender itself.  I use both, but personally prefer Daz for figure work, given how it was designed for that purpose in particular.  If you go to the first page of this thread, there is a compliation of free Trek stuff for Poser/Daz.  If you're looking for a TWOK uniform to match that set you're working on, that's where I'd start looking.  The best TNG-era stuff I've found is by nvent3d on Rendo, in my opnion, but it's not free.  There are still some uniforms to be found on sharecg that mostly make use of Valiant and Courageous, which are outfits for the old Victoria 4 and Michael 4 figures.  Those outfits can be used on the newer Genesis figures with auto-fit and figure clone  techniques.  As for poses, the free Genesis figures come with basic poses that can be used for getting started.  You just need to install the "essential" packages for Genesis, Genesis 2, etc.  For free or nearly-free stuff, that's where I'd start.
