  • Morph WIP: Christopher Reeve for Genesis

Hopefully you can see some of the difference in the angle on the face and where the top of the forehead is and how much longer your lower face is.  Don't forget the ears.

didn't want to go off topic, but gotta ask . . how did you do that Cris ?

I took the image of Gregorius' morph into Photoshop with a desaturated image of Chris Reeve.  I overlayed one over the other and lowered the opacity so you can see how they line up.

thank you, there is a model I just cant get the nose right, and cheeks, doing something like that might help me get her dialed in closer.

which is why I asked, I tried something like that but never could get it to work, seemed I just covered up the image with another, never had thought of desaturation  or doing anything like that.

Yes, have that already.  Like I said the drive won't power under what ever USB feature this unit is offering.  I need an external way to power the drive so it spins up to make the data transfer back and forth.

Please re-read my post. What I said was to purchase another external drive that has it's own power adapter such as this one: https://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-FireWire-Desktop-External/dp/B000WBJDUA/ref=sr_1_20?ie=UTF8&qid=1472696526&sr=8-20&keywords=powered+external+Hard+Drive THEN you could use that adapter if needed

ETA to provide link for hard drive

  • More real looking skin texture(too smooth)

Yeah actually. I'me useing HD Jazmine and there is an HD Morph Slider one for the face and one for the body. I slid them both to 100%, but nothing seemed to have happened..

Do you mean "nothing happened in the Viewport" or "nothing happened in the render"? The visibility of HD morphs in the Viewport are very dependent on the SubDivision Level setting (on the Parameters tab, General>Mesh Resolution). You won't usually see any detail to an HD morph unless the SubD is at least 2 or 3, and not all characters load with the SubD properly set — e.g the default for a pristine Genesis3 figure is a SubD of 1. If you dial up the HD morph manually instead of using a Character preset, that will not affect the SubD setting.

A cautionary note; if your scene has too many high-poly objects like Genesis figures, and their SubD settings are too high, it is possible to crash D|S. Remember that each time you nudge the SubD up by 1, you quadruple the system memory needed to hold the object data. If you're rendering in Iray, this may also blow past your graphics card's VRAM and the render will fall back to (slow) CPU mode.

I looked at that option just now... not sure if that's the route I need.  I looked at AC USB powered hubs and found that most folks mentioned that they are not used for actually powering up a drive only for data transfer.  :-( Since the RCA using USB 2 tech I guess any drive I attach to it needs an external ac power supply to make it go zoom zoom!

That would be a better option. Buy an externally powered hard drive such as some of the WD "My Book" drives. Even if it has regular USB plug you could use an adapter such as this https://www.amazon.com/BestDealUSA-Female-Mini-Adapter-Cable/dp/B00841AGCO/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1472692045&sr=8-4&keywords=usb+to+mini+adapter to convert it to mini

  • virtual penny 4 yor carrara thoughts ?

I wonder how closely Genesis 2 and Genesis 1 match up for poses.

I have two (at least) RawArt characters for Genesis 1 that come with the same, cooperative "Hoof" morph called "Genihooves". Both my Demon Rafael and Satyros use the same morph for their hooves - and it looks great. No geograft necessary!

Oh... except for the horns... they are geograft and I don't think I've ever had them working.... Been a while since I've played with them

But for that I can easily add or model something else to just paerent to the head... this whole leg issue is different.

but it would be nice to have a character builder / dressing room in Unity from DAZ 3D and created for DAZ 3D / Poser characters and an exporter in DAZ Studio that allowed me to export characters, clothing, and so on in DAZ Studio that I've customized directly in DAZ Studio to that character builder in Unity...............................

I just checked the Unity Asset store for a standlone character builder / dressing room from Morph 3D that you just add your own DAZ models too without buying other models"

Hi I would imagine that there are Licensing
    restrictions.
Those morph3d MCS models are under a different license
for use in potentially Commercial game releases,
    than our existing poser/Daz models.

  • Heard a rumor about V8

That makes sense then to go back to the different figures, I didn't think of it that way.

As for the morph packs, in order to use this character here http://www.daz3d.com/isa-for-rune-7 you need to purchase this base model http://www.daz3d.com/rune-7.  I do not understand what makes this addition any different then any of the other muscular morphs?  You used to be able to buy something like She Freak and she came with a ton of body/face morph abilities instead of just a shape.  Why the addition of so many simple body structures like this?  Why not just make a Morph pack with all the morphs and be done with it?  It isn't like those details in Rune are much different then Kalea and so on.  What makes it worse is that in order to use certain characters in the store those sets are required for it to work properly.

I don't know about Isa, but I bought From Russia for Rune 7 (which I don't own) and it works quite well with Victoria 7. The end results are just slightly different from what I see in the promo images.

For myself, I have reached the level of "Good Enough" with G1 and G2, because they suit my needs very well. I only buy G3 stuff if it's something I can't find with previous generations, like the aforementioned From Russia or Imari. I probably won't buy anything from G4 at all.

And for the people who say things like "Oh, if you don't buy the latest computer/graphics card/figure, you'll be left behind!" it isn't an issue. This isn't a race, and as long as what I have does what I need, I see no reason to buy something newer. V4, G1 and G2 will continue to serve me well.

Now anything that can be used with all generations, such as buildings, shaders, environments and props are a different story. Them, I'll keep buying!

  • virtual penny 4 yor carrara thoughts ?

OK, did a little experimenting.  Here is another possible strategy.  Load the G2M minotaur.  Select the legs.  Unconform them from G2M.  The shaders should look OK now.  Select the G2M.  Select the actor level and enter the modeling room.  Select from the feet up to about mid thigh.  Create a new shading domain.  Go to the shader room for the new shading domain and set the alpha to zero to hide the legs.  Apply the same pose to the G2M minotaur and the minotaur legs.  See if they line up.  Note, I got an error when I tried to apply a minotaur specific pose after I unconformed the legs, but I was still able to apply other G2M poses.

Might be a bit tedious, but I think you can experiment with the shading domain until you get a good alignment.  And again, I think applying some hair might hide some seams.  I haven't done animations so I don't know if this would be a workable solution over a whole cycle.

EDIT: remember, you will be able to morph the meshes in the vertex modeling room.

  • Heard a rumor about V8

I heard it was in the development stage... is this true?  If so this would be very - very tough.  V4- V5 didn't even last- V6 maybe a little over a year- V7 now I am hearing of V8 - Gen4?  This is costly, and constantly having to buy clothes, hair, poses, utilities... :(  not good news if it is true.

V4 has lasted a lot longer then a few years on her own, and content is still being created for her, didn't even last, wrong statement there.  I still use her and her male counterpart quite often as do many others, she doesn't have the morphing capability of Genesis but she can be and still is highly utilized.

It is hilarious that when Genesis came out it was the best advance in a figure model and yet even with it's capability of being able to be morphed into any shape or character you desired, which in my mind made it quite useful, they went back to creating two figures so you had to buy more and more just to use it.

The main reason for reintroducing the split into male and female was to make life easier for content creators; modelling to fit a female form on the neuter base was very tricky, reverse Source Shape from Target needed fiddly touch-up work for an item that was going to be sold.

Same with the morph packs, why have different morph packs just to get a bit of a different look to your character, why can't there be simple ones like a muscle pack to get that built look, a shapely pack to get more body shapes from lean to heavy, and a creature pack and so on?  Why do you have to have a ton of different shapes packs on the market just to get a subtle look that other morphs can give with a little work?

I'm not sure what you mean here - there are base body and head morphs, just as there have always bee, and PA add-on morph expansions, just as there have always been (and I can't think of many characters that require any of the PA packs).

That makes sense then to go back to the different figures, I didn't think of it that way.

I can understand the need for different packs for Aiko, Star, as well as different age groups, because those characters are quite a bit different anatomically.

Maybe I don't understand the point of selling a dozen morph/texture sets with subtle differentces between them, when just simple morph packs can do the trick, it isn't the first time Daz found a great way to confuse me. blush

Do you remember the Elite line for V4/M4?  They were $30 high end textures, and then you also had to purchase $30 morph sets that only had 3-4 morphs each for body and face?  I tend to think of the various characters since Genesis (V5-V7, etc) like those characters, except that instead of getting the texture separate from the morphs, you get 1 texture and 1 morph, along with a hardly ever used custom UV... :)

There were plenty of characters after the Elite Morphs were released that theoretically required them, but you could usually get something close without the Elite morphs.  So too can you get a character for Rune 7 without actually having Rune (unless it uses her UV's, which hardly ever happens any more) it won't look quite the same, but the skin texture and the majority of the morph is usable. :)

  • Standardize rigging and posing between 3D programs!

Actually if DAZ wanted to sell more models & Game Dev License I wonder if it would be possible for them to make a Unity Game Engine module that could handle DAZ models, well let's be practical, Genesis 3 models natively in DAZ Studio including LODs.

    This is the business model

I knew about the Morph 3D as I own a couple, well actually their only 2 base models. As the realistic style is more for those folk doing completely different type of games than me the style is not suitable for my game style.

When I bought a DAZ Game Development that also made buying such Morph 3D models a redundant expense. I've looked at the script UI/API and it's OK but it would be nice to have a character builder / dressing room in Unity from DAZ 3D and created for DAZ 3D / Poser characters and an exporter in DAZ Studio that allowed me to export characters, clothing, and so on in DAZ Studio that I've customized directly in DAZ Studio to that character builder in Unity that that fellow talked about and it menu options and such be populated. I guess expecting a port of DAZ file format is a bit much and a waste of effort as Unity's physics and such is geared to rigged FBXes with bones and blendshapes and works quite well.

While most programmers can do that work themselves Unity, like DAZ, has many, many hobbiests that don't know a whit about programming or 3D modeling so I will continue to watch what DAZ 3D does.

I just checked the Unity Asset store for a standlone character builder / dressing room from Morph 3D that you just add your own DAZ models too without buying other models and it must not be finished yet as there is none in there.

I admit that I bought and still buy for G2 male and female, I like the figures and may invest some money in the G3 male and possibly the female because of some of the characters on the market available to them.  But another new shiny figure so soon? Unless it has something radically new and useful to me, and can utilize the older generations textures and clothes without a whole lot of hoops to jump through, it won't be worth my time.

They (Daz) keep going at this rate this place is going to be just as costly as if you were to shop at a certain other 3d store that starts with a T.  Think about it, the technology gets better they will want more profit, and where does that leave the hobbyists who made this place what it is?  I love supporting my favorite vendors, I will even go so far as to buy a character set that I cannot use yet to do so, but if things keep heading that direction I'll just simply take my leave.

  • Strange Problem with G3F and V7 shapes

OK, sorry, I thought the header you posted was from the actual morph file not the scene file. It was late so I was not reading very well.

Since it was a scene file that it comes from it makes sense that it mentions animation information, even when there is none.

Sorry I couldn't help but as you said uninstalling and reinstalling is about the easiest approach.

Thanks for trying to help at least :)

I found that saving as a Character asset had no strange side effects so I guess I will avoid Figure/Prop Asset for now.

  • Standardize rigging and posing between 3D programs!

"DAZ studio only could exist because Poser allowed other software inc Carrara, Shade and Vue to use cr2 etc which seems to have been forgotten,."

Yes as a temporay hedge against the potential loss of the singular platform that supported its content business model,
Zygote/Daz created an alternative to the floundering poser application based on the CR2 Figure format.

However The poser based CR2 is a Bloated& unweildy format not given to Expandability or innovation.

There are very good technical reasons why Daz has adandoned it
    for its native figures.

"it stands to reason more DAZ models would be sold if other softwares could natively open duf. "

Forgive me but  to what "other softwares" do you refer??
I hear this quite often from DS users and it is quite an incorrect leap in Logic.

Note how the aspring games content division of  The  parent company that own owns Daz3D,( Morph 3D) is not trying to convince the makers of unity to support the "DUF" format.

Proprietary formats tend not to do well in a competitive consumer market..ask Sony about this.

From what I can see it seems to transfer over very well to 3delight.  He's added some comments and examples I believe.

  • Creating Morphs in a posed position

I've been eagerly watching some of PhilW's excellent tutorials, and one of them was about creating morphs for a posed figure. It's an aswesome functionality to have within Carrara, and it works a treat on Victoria 4 - as shown in Learning Carrara 8.5, clip 1510. Thanks for talking us thorugh those steps, Phil!

So I thought, let's try it with Genesis and Genesis 2. Sadly the menus and supposedly the workflow has changed rather dramatically, and I can't seem to make it work. Here's what I've tried:

    • Load Victoria 5 or 6, add some clothing, discover ghastly pokethrough
    • Select the clothing item's Actor level
    • Select Edit Vertex Object (little wrench icon, top left in the Assemble Room)
    • Receive message that the topology is protected. Hit OK.
    • Now we're in Edit Mode, seeing the unposed garment and a posed figure.
    • Under Morph, we can now create a new Morph Area, or select an existing one that matches the vertex group we want to morph.
    • In the dropdown underneath, we can create a new Morph Target in our chosen area.

So far so good - but now I'm stuck. I can edit my morph now, but when I go into Animation Mode to see the (supposedly posed) garment, it's only half posed, and I can't seem to select any vertices, no matter if I'm editing the morph or not. Vertcies show red when I'm not editing my morph, or green when I do.

And of course, as soon as I hit validate, Carrara crashes on me - which makes me think that I'm doing something majorly wrong here, or this functionality isn't implemented successfully. Can anyone shed some light on how to create morphs on clothing for posed G1/G2 figures?
