AIUTO...CHI CONOSCE L’ITALIANO? PARTE QUATTORDICI
AIUTO...CHI CONOSCE L’ITALIANO?

I've resigned myself to the fact that most people use "medieval" to refer to anything pre-Victorian... which is at least closer than the time I was doing a promo event for the local Renaissance festival and was (for that day anyway) the handmaiden to a noblewoman in full (quite accurate) regalia.
We got asked if we were from "the Titanic era."
I'd say I lost so much faith in humanity that day, except that by that point I already had under my belt several years at re-enactments with patrons asking if the fire (or the food I was eating, or the baby some woman was nursing, or...) was real.
From my personal experience as a viking re-enacter and food stall owner at medieval faires here in germany in the 80's it was quite different here and then. People weren't totally clueless, even though we managed to surprise them with historical facts like the lack of potatoes on the menu and other details. Might be that living among architecture that sometimes is 500+ years old widens the mind a bit.

I think it really might. For the most part, folks in America think our own revolution is super-ancient, and really don't think back past that much. The recent uptick of historical shows (Tudors, Vikings, etc.) has shifted that somewhat, and in fairness there have also always been patrons who get really into the whole thing... but we still get way too many that we have to convince not to find out the hard way that the fire is, in fact, real. (Maybe they just think our props budget is far, far bigger than it is...?)
As an American I can attest to the cultural hallmark of overstating size as a compensation for our insecurities.
Those huge pickup trucks and overconfident pickup lines toward women all come from the same place. And our country is also a little kid compared to the ages of others out there. But on the topic of the Victorian style, I am definitely a fan. I love all the art of that era, and one of the reasons Cecelia 9's bundles is one of my favorites in recent times. I also find that our appropriately named Victoria perfectly also fits the look of that era. She has that medieval look where she can be a damsel in distress, or a leader of an army. Freja is a great option for a viking look-but I still prefer Victoria. Add about a foot in height, some muscle and she's got it!
I'm also wildly in love with Victorian era fashions, especially the later 19th, and I positively adored the Cecelia set - can so much relate!

Victoria 9. As usual.

I was quite confused myself. Victoria 9 remains one of the most unique models, despite her being the first of the generation. And that applies to her face and her skins. For me, Chloe somewhat resembles Elena 9 but I don't see any reference to Victoria or any celebrity either.
Personally I think Chloe 9 is loosely inspired by Carriejune Bowlby, made famous by some FB/Reddit sh*tposter.
Old versions of VickyWhen I started with V3, the base character cost $39.95 in December 2004 from my receipt. Now 'only' $11.95, so something has improved a little.
The Victoria 4.2 starter bundle cost me $34.97 in December 2006, now showing as $51.95. I guess this shows that DAZ thinks V3 is not used much while V4 still is used. Thinking about it, I've just had a search for new V4 releases at Rendo and.. the most recent was 3 April to fit a LAF2 hair to V4. So that's pretty current for a close to 20yo base character.

The forum bugged out and deleted my initial post about the model, I thought I recognised her from the banner image, especially the right hand model and simply asked if she was based on anyone (they usually are).
If not then, OK.
This forum can get tetchy about some trivial queries.

Free Toon Characters coming July 1st, early download available nowIn case you missed the announcement on July 1st, they're now available at:
https://webboids.comThe latest version of the Webboids is always available from the front page, and new freebies are being uploaded regualrly. Check it out, and have fun!
Previously:
One of my favourite set of 3D characters to date has been 3D Universe's Toon Generations, the original version. I've loved every other generation they've done based on Genesis versions 3-9, but the original version – based on an all-original mesh – is still my favourite.
Before I retired, I commissioned Steve Corder (3D Universe) to make me a modern, standalone version of the original Toon Generations, of sorts. I requested a body style that was a little more definition and a wider range of morphs, and he applied a quick sample of body types that was our starting point.

A quick word about Steve Corder. He's a brilliant artist and one of the easiest I've ever worked with; moreover, he's fast. Very, very fast. It was a pleasure to work with him and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
Once the basic body types were set I gave him a list of different morphs I wanted added to the heads, and he turned everything around far faster and far better than I could have hoped for (despite me adding more requests as things progressed).
Once the basic toons were done, I made a second request; when Aiko 3 and Hiro 3 first came out, they came with Stephanie 3 and David 3 body shapes, in case you wanted to use your Aiko 3 and Hiro 3 clothing on more "realistic" characters. I wanted that.
My second set of requests were to have male and female "semi-realistic" head morphs added to the base characters, and again, he delivered exactly what I asked for.
I used the toon versions of the characters in my very first attempt at 3D animation, two episodes of The Hrimfaxi Adventures (you can see them on Youtube, my channel is "Studio Hrimfaxi", or on my website, "sterdan.com"). They were lots of fun to do and more of a "proof of concept" than a shining example of modern 3D animation, but I learned a lot and should I make any future 3D animations, they'll be much improved.
I've had a lot of fun with the characters – and still do – and I've decided to share them with the DAZ Studio community, for free.
My original hope was to find a PA to donate them to (no charge) so that they could update the characters and sell them to DAZ as a future freebie (ensuring a wide distribution to anyone interested and a stable site for hosting) but the artists I approached had too many of their own projects to take on another.
I hope to make some simple clothes and hair to include with the characters before I post them and – with any luck – I'll have everything ready by 2025/June/22 at the latest. If I have enough extras made before then, or I realize I'm not ever going to be satisfied with what I make or have time to do them, I'll upload the characters before that date.
I'm currently looking for options of where to make them available. I had originally planned on useing Sharecg, but they're in the process of closing down so I'm looking elsewhere. If anyone can recommend a site, please let me know.
Here's a few test images I did to see what they can do. The images are a mix of full toon and semi-realistic.
The characters come with clones to help them wear Genesis 3 and Genesis 8 clothing, but using those (and base Genesis 3 and 8 males and females) you can use any clothing from Micheal/Victoria/Aiko3/Hero3/Freak3 (or anything you have clones to be used for Genesis 3 and 8), as shown in the images.
The characters can usually use Genesis 8 poses and animations with minimal adjustment.
There are no iRay textures, they're made to work well with 3DL and OpenGL for fast rendering and animation.
I'm committed to some game programming for the next few weeks so I may not make a lot of immediate progress on the clothing/hair modelling, but I'll post progress images as I do.
If anyone has any questions or comments (or knows of a good site to host the files), please post away.
I've included the original body shape samples that Steve provided before starting the project, a render of the base male and female toons (bathing suits are included as morphing clothing), a render of the characters with some semi-realistic morphing applied (with a touch of "young", there are some age morphs included), samples wearing V4 and M4 Uzilite Next Adventure clothing and the Aiko3 and Hiro3 bodysuits with Project Z textures applied, a sample of a female character's young and old versions, and a pair of young space cadets.

Here's something I created for a fanzine. I definitely spent too much time making this, but it was a learning experience to try recreating the coloring effects/processes of comics from the 1970s-1980s. My workflow is pretty standard: Original renders created in Poser Pro 11 with the Comic Book Preview. I then clean up and composite the work in Clip Studio Paint. I used a new toolset for this that I purchased from the Vintage Texture Supply Co., KraftTone. KraftTone is a set of brushes designed to duplicate the look of old comics. It's an interesting set of tools that has a lot to offer. I'm just scratching the surface with this stuff, but I think this mostly came out okay.
Figure is Victoria 4 wearing the Red Sonja costume by TerryMcG.
I don't know if the shading tone dots are going to reproduce well here, or not.
Iray (etc.) hair that works well in FilamentI've been experimenting with Filament and using the wonderful FilaToon Converter tool by V3Digitimes to convert objects and scenes to filament and I've noticed that, for these purposes, not all objects are created equal. Some hair objects especially turn into an absolute mess when converted, usually because they have a "skullcap" and are very very strandy, resulting in the hair becoming a black Afro and/or having a black scalp. There's no discernible pattern to which ones will work, though - there are ancient and recent hair models that convert nicely and ones that convert terribly.
Top ones to avoid seem to include Andrew Flip Hair for Gen2 male (just becomes a black Afro if you size up the outline for a wider angle shot) and Ashley hair for Gen3 female (somehow unable to host an outline) and the Hair Set for Gen8 males, which universally becomes just blackness because of the closely packed strands. Lani hair for Gen3 female also seems to be mad after conversion, although its textures convert nicely if you turn off outlines.
In the middle ground, DeRoca hair for Victoria 4 etc. is a Poser asset, which probably explains why its outlines take on the texture you assign the hair and become opaque so correcting the outline material just turns the whole thing black. However, if you're careful to have your texturing done before you apply the outline, it looks gorgeous. Similarly, Carla hair for Gen8 female accepts outlines and doesn't go weird if re-textured, but has only basic edge-of-the-model outlines rather than any sort of detailing, so you'd need to apply detailing by means of custom textures. Charm Hair and Dream Hair for Gen2 female (very similar models) are the same, but also have very very pale highlights round the edges that may or may not work with your aesthetic. Armani Hair from Gen8 Starter Essentials accepts textures fine, but outlines are hit or miss depending on your angle of view - some angles make it look like Sonic the Hedgehog while others have basically no outline - and the Toulouse hair is similar. (The earlier versions are similarly dodgy on outlines but otherwise seem fine) The dForce Starter Essentials dForce Mohawk Hair accepts outlines, but they appear as grey (and make it really hard to see in viewport as they obscure the strands and are the same colour as the background) and render exclusively as the base colour selected in their Surfaces parameter - with random grey areas where the outlines just obscure the hair. Filippa Hair for Gen2 female inherits strange outlines and has the Charm/Dream weird highlights, but accepts new textures fine and looks alright as long as the outlines are small.
On the other hand, the Hall of Fame for hair that accepts outlines wonderfully, translates textures in a pleasing format and accepts new textures without incident post conversion:
- Bonnie Hair for Gen8 female
- Eirgrid Hair for Gen9
- Elegance Hair for Gen2 female (surprisingly similar to Charm and Dream, but the outlines work fine and the highlights aren't too high)
There are bound to be many more, I'm curious to know other people's experiences with this and which products you'd recommend for use in Filament renders.
