Replicate a face from a frontal photo, at hand, no plugins that fails
Speaking of which: there are a lot of very talented people on this thread. If anyone is interested to be a beta tester for the upcoming HeadShop 13, please send me an email to [email protected]. To preview the new version, follow this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s5IhOtNPzhI

Replicate a face from a frontal photo, at hand, no plugins that failsWow outrider I love your input in most threads. you give alot of great information, but do the pictures I post look like caricatures ? I took a grand total of about 10 minutes to use a program that does a very good job creating a "likeness" with only a decent photograph. It is a 3D model after all, even if you got the absolute perfect dimensions down to fractions of millimeters as soon as you apply a generic expression your perfect measurements are waisted. Unless you are willing to watch hours of video to capture every particular nuance the real person applies then customize morphs accordingly what would the the point of exacting perfection be? Cartoonest give impression of what they are trying to convey through the use of a particular media and most people can interpret the intentions of the artist, which is the same thing you are doing with 3D Art. Take a look at the pictures I attached which are all of the same person, stangely they are all based on the same dimensions yet render a different impression of what the person looks like in each picture. They look more or less the same but not exactly. I would be willing to bet that it would be very possible to make many renditions look very much like the original without applying exacting measurements. Unless you use some type of scanning apperatus lazer, depth sensors, point cloud and a hollywood budget to study how a person smile, how they talk, blink, walk sit and so forth it is just an indication and imatation of who the person is, much like portrait done with oil paint would be. By the way my intent here is to be constructive not argumenative as I said I do value people with expetise like yours chiming in. But please if you have examples of your work that will help resolve the issue in this thread that many of us are trying to assist with, add to actual progression by posting a file. Seriously I alway want to learn better techniques and I'm guessing we all do.
You extracted a bit too much from what I said. I wasn't trying be argumentative, but IMO Facegen is only the start of a process if you want to capture a fuller likeness. Most of Facegen's work is simply applying details from a photo to the texture. The actual shape that Facegen makes is very rarely that close to be honest. So the resemblance comes from what you see in the texture more than the shape. This has issues, as soon as you turn to the side, most of the time the illusion falls off because Facegen generally uses the one photo. Even when you use a side photo which Facegen can do, it only applies that detail so far on the side, and sometimes it even backfires. If I use all 3 photo options that Facegen gives you, I have had a hard time getting that to work well. In theory it should work best, but because Facegen makes you manually place dots, it is very hard to do that consistently for both sides of the face. The result is more asymmetry than there should be, and sometimes the photos blend poorly together even when they are all lit the same. Besides, there is always a clear cut off point where the Facegen part of the image ends and the Genesis base that you used begins. The side photo is more about shape than texture.
You can use other textures besides the default, but Facegen is "tuned" for the base textures. If you use a texture that is wildly different from the base, lets say African, then you will probably not like the result. I have seen textures come out purple from Facegen! So what I do is edit the existing textures. I like to remove all the moles and specific spots from the face and torso. It gets weird to see the exact same moles in the same places on different people. So what I do is make a 'clean' texture, and then later add in moles or whatever to make that texture unique. You can always use photos to add in that detail later.
I am not saying your renders are bad. I have offered what advice I can, that most of the source photos are problematic here. This is the vital part of the whole thing, you have to have a good photo, which is why everybody has had so much trouble pinning this lady down. And I outlined what makes a good source photo. Without that photo, this is going to be tough. Yes, you created a Marie Osmond quickly, sometimes it works that way. It is apparent that with this girl that she is going to be more challenging.
I have discussed Facegen in more detail in its own thread. This thread is not specifically about Facegen. It is about replicating a face from a photo, which could mean dial spinning, custom shaping in Hexagon, and lots of things. And it is apparent that zilver desires an accurate likeness as possible. A lot of this stuff is simply trial and error, there is no right or wrong way if you can get the desired result.
Obviously nobody stays the same. People can look very different from day to day, even hour to hour. Any recreation of a person, whether it be a cartoon or 3D, is going be about that one particular moment in time for them. The pictures you posted, 2 are album covers, one was released in 1984, the other was released in 1988. Obviously with 4 years of time between them, she is going to look different. Also, because they are album covers, these photos are professional creations, with make up and lighting. I think it is pretty clear that the first image, from 1984, is a younger woman. The 2nd is slightly older and more mature, this is reflected in her face and attire, and this is probably intentional to reflect on her music has changed in the 4 years since the previous. The 3rd pic looks like a screen cap from a VCR tape, it is very hard to even see, but she is giving a live performance, and certainly the conditions are going to be different than that of a professional photo shoot.
So if you want to see what I have done. Here it goes. I did try this girl but I didn't like the result at all. The photos are pretty difficult to get a good result from. So here is another I have done before. I have done this picture with Facegen, Face Transfer, and Headshop as I have all 3. In the end, I liked the Face Transfer more.
This is the original image. This is Devon Aoki at an early stage of her career. She has very unique face, perhaps because she is Japanese and German. She is sort of like the human version of Grumpy Cat, LOL, and I mean that in a positive way, not an insult.

This is the kind of pic I am talking about. A straight ahead shot with mostly even light and no expression. BUT it still isn't good enough. See the light reflections on her skin? That will be baked into the texture, so that's not what we want.
So I edited it. I worked out some of the flash and I tinted the color a bit because the result was too dark.

This image would work for Facegen and Headshop, but Face Transfer cannot use it because her head is cut off by the pic. So...lets give her one!

As goofy as it looks, this will work for Face Transfer. It doesn't have to be perfect, as long as it is human and you are keeping the hair out of the face. I also upscaled the image using an AI upscaler. Sometimes this works, sometimes it doesn't. It can help get rid of some of the nasty grain in the image. I fed this to Face Transfer.
I used the Face Transfer Shapes set from Phil, which as I said before are essentially required. I applied the main fix shape around 60% and a little of the Asian Face. I don't think I did anything else.
Face Transfer then spits out some textures. Maybe some of have noticed, but Face Transfer does not apply any other textures at all, no bumps, no gloss, and most important, no translucency maps. Not having trans maps will kill you, this is why the face turns red when you render. You have to apply some maps. The default Genesis 8 material preset looks frankly terrible, so I opt for something else entirely, a bluejaunte material preset. I think I used Misumi for this one, but pretty much any of them will work. Apply the preset, then swap your Face Transfer textures in for the color and trans maps. Turn down the trans value to around 0.75-0.85, and the bump map strength, too. You may need to adjust the one of the trans color values.

Face Transfer did a nice job capturing her eyebrows. The white reflection you see is an actual reflection, not something baked in. I then did some work on the face texture, the texture has a dark black line where the lips meet in the photo. It is not too visible here, but when you open her mouth it will be. Then there are the eye lids, which often look off and sometimes the sclera ends up on the face texture. The nose usually needs a touch up, the black Face Transfer applies to the nostrils is too large sometimes. Face Transfer gave an ok eye color here, but I wanted to use a better one. I can't remember whose eyes they are. I also made the lips glossier.

So there she is. It is not perfect, but I didn't custom sculpt her.
FREE upgrade to HeadShop 12.5 for G3 and G8 (Commercial)We made available a free upgrade or HeadShop 12 for G8 and G3 users. No license needed, only you need to have an installed HeadShop 12 for G8 or HeadShop 12 for G3.
Installer will upgrade existing files in the “DAZ 3D/HeadShop plugin” folder (see READ ME). https://printahead.net/product/free-headshop-12-5-upgrade-gen-3/
The new upgrade:
- Texture Blending. Provides much improved blending between the face and the body color. By measuring colors in three distinct areas of the original photo, it changes the base maps for Face, Torso, Legs and Arms so that they match the persons natural skin color.
- HD (High Definition) monitor support. New upgrade works with HD screens and does not distort or shorten dialogs in the HS mode
HeadShop 12 HelpAll these Face transfer Softwares are just horrible, I buy them all and they have no good tutorials Video or reading, Like WTF !!! for a newbie like me I am just wasting money and tons of time, if they come out with new stuff shouldn't they have "GOOD" reading material tutorials to learn about the software, they show these video's on youtube with very little about the software and thats it, I bought the Unlimted and upgrade to Face Transfer that came with Daz 4.12, then I bought FaceGen, everyone looks like a Monster in there, cant figure it out, no good tutorials to learn, now a new HeadShop 12 comes outr, I buy that , one again no Good Tutorials to learn, for a newbie to the PC world like me this is horrible, I don't mind reading and learning but THERE IS NOTHING TO READ !!!!!!!!
so I use this new HeadShop 12, and this is what I get, Take a look at the pic..... no where in the Help section, no where in tutorials no where at all does it tell you how to adjust getting the eyes to match up with the Morph on the right, so you export the morph and you have this FREAK LOOKING MORPH !!!!!!!!
So, Please tell me people, ...is it me, ...?? I mean should I not be doing this type of stuff, or should this stuff come with more directions and tutorials, am I just to dam stupid and can't find how to adjust this stuff..??
I am wasting so much time trying to figure this stuff out, I JUST WANT TO MAKE A F#$KING MORPH OF MY DAUGHTER SO I CAN PUT HER IN COOL FUN OUTFITS AND PRINT PICS OUT AND MAKE HER HAPPY !!!!!!!!!!!!
Jubie, the issue with G8 eyelashes is something of a DAZ problem (they made them separate for G8). What you can do is erease the eyelashes and load new ones that can be adjusted. And as the developer of HeadShop, we do bend backwards to explain how the app works (teach panels, how-to videos, 35 page manual). I am happy to skype/screen share with you and walk you through your issues. PM me.
A little FYI: we just released HS12.5 FREE update. You can download it at abalonellc.com, it has better blending and works better on HR screens.
Hello
Thank you for the reply about HeadShop, and sorry about what I said about HeadShop, but I just couldn't find out how to get it to work properly, I would love to do a Skype Tutorial with you if possible, that is very kind of you to offer that, I messaged you and sent over my info .................Thanks again

I purchased HeadShop 12 with LoveChild WIN - Upgrade from HS11 from DAZ. I went to your website and added the free updates to my cart; but when I try to checkout I keep getting a message "PrintAhead refused to Connect".
Will the updates be available at DAZ ?

HeadShop 12 Help... edit ...... IMPOSSIBLE to guess where your Genesis 8 Morphs eyes and mouth will be, and once you hit Apply it brings you to the picture on my last post and there is no way to go back, so you need to start all over,
... edit ...For placing the dots, one is not guessing where they might be on the morphed figure. One places them to their locations on the photos. One is telling the program where the lips are for example so it can take that area to the lips and make [hopefully] more accurate morphs.
It helps to spend some time just experimenting, not necessarily trying to save files.
Thank you for your reply Catherine, In the FaceGen software I understand about placing the dots, that was easly figured out, when I said "Guessing" I was talking about making the adjustment in HeadShop after you hit the Apply button,
and yes I did see the Youtube video for Headshop, it really does not explain the software very well at all, it skips over many different things and never even mentions anything about the problem I ran into at the beginning of this post.
HeadShop 12 HelpJust a couple of Facegen morphs using the default G8F textures and Belfry hair. [served purpose, I have now removed them]
To make them one simply follows the directions one step at a time, selects the figure it is for and the appropriate saving place {where the base figures are kept} and exports it. The nifty thing with Facegen is that one can export out the same morph for each of the Genesis figures!
Oh yes, for Headshop I trust you found this video {was linked to on the product page}.

HeadShop 12 HelpI don't have HeadShop, but what I can determin from your attached image, is that HeadShop assumes that there is a full head on the picture. So when you have cut the top part off, it reduces the rest proportionally.
My suggestion is to try with another picture where all her head is visible.
Felis, Thank You for your reply, but its not that, I have attached another pic, I put bought my daughters in there to morph them into one, when that happens you can see the results, it cuts off the top half and the bottom half, and if I only use one of there pictures it does the same DAM THING !!!!!!!!,
OH, it also has that top piece in the middle that you can adjust and move higher or lower, but your taking a guess at it, an d if your not right which is like IMPOSSIBLE to guess where your Genesis 8 Morphs eyes and mouth will be, and once you hit Apply it brings you to the picture on my last post and there is no way to go back, so you need to start all over,
How do these people have the nerve to sell this stuff !!!!!!!!!!!!

No it's not just you. I did not buy Headshop 12. There are tutorials on the product pages and sometimes over at Youtube.com. It used to be called Faceshop.
The photograph used appears to be a double take, the unexpected additional info may have confused the calculations. I edited the image and tried a few things to see how Face Transfer could handle it. The eyes do not match up ... my thoughts are that because these programs are expecting adult images, the eyes of a child are larger.
You've purchased 2 of those programs inside of 30 days so if you cannot make them work for your project, you could put in for a store refund/credit, at least for one or the other of them, or both, your call.
n.b. that it is not unusual to make some texture improvements to match the face to the model. The eyes themselves do not need to cover the eyeballs for example, one can use any one of the myriad of eye presets that came with all those delightful characters we've been collecting. The eyelashes normally get erased off of the image too as the models come with eyelashes and we do not normally require 2 sets ;-)
Another way of getting a character to look specific is to find some characters that look close and dial in various percentages of their morphs. Then there are the 'growing up' series of morphs [for example] which assist to bring the adult figure down to a child figure.
...................
Face Transfer IMHO does the fastest best job to align images to the model. You have that one ... it's helper is this product:

HeadShop 12 Problem, Not Loading Properly "Please Help"So I just Purchased this and followed all directions on the install, double checked everything like they asked to make sure it was installed the right way, when I open Daz 4.12 and go to Edit / Start HeadShop , everything seems fine until I get to the "The create new project window" it does not open all the way, and HeadShop Loader window says waiting for HeadShop and my mouse curser has the Hour Glass when I am in DAZ, when I move the Mouse into the Create a New Project Window the mouse is fine and I can even start the project but the window is so small that it just is not loaded all the way, and its not like I can expand it
Then when I close it down it tells me "HeadShop closed before it can Create the necessary files" , and the Genesis 8 Morph that was loaded in Daz has just her limps showing, no body or head.

Headshop 11 ProblemsQuick question:
I've installed HeadShop 11 for the general release version of DS 4.12 and it works, etc., but it doesn't show up in 4.12 Beta. Not a big deal but would that have to be a separate install or is some other step needed?
Some good face transfer programs?HeadShop can mirror better half of face over to the obscured one. Pls. upload the picture that you have problems with
Some good face transfer programs?Hi all,
I have tried Face Transfer and HeadShop 10 for putting real faces onto a Genesis 8.
However, it seldom works for woman. Once there are a few hairs nex to her head of the lighting is a bit off I get the most stranges output from the programs.
Its truelly horror...Now my question follows; is there any really good face transfer program out there which can interpret some hair nex to faces and can deal when the lighitng is a bit off?
The programs above only work when you basically have a photo which comes close to a neutral expression portrait. Thanks in advance.
That is pretty much how all of them work, you need good source material to get the best results.

Face TransferBy all my pictures, I get why I get 'face transfer failed to generate try a different source image' What's wrong, notting work. This isn't funny !
Just tried out face transfer free and I was getting the same message for almost every photo. The solution was to rename the source image, and remove all special characters from filename (eg. spaces, dashes, accented letters, etc.), just give it a simple very short name. Btw. Headshop has the same problem, it also cannot process long special filenames. Also make sure the path either does not contain special characters. After this all photos were accepted.
