Smart Content "Greyed Out" after fresh installRichard Haseltine said:

Ok so I refreshed the entire database and got it back to where it was, all 4900 items just greyed out.
What would happen if I were to just highlight them all and click "install"? Would it re-download them all? Or, would it just add it to the database or whatever so I can access it in Smart Content? I tried it on a few, but I can't figure out what it's doing.
How did you initially install? The fact that you can see the files in the Content Library (I think, can't check since this has taken me to a new page) suggests you used Install Manager/Daz Central/Manual installation. Selecting Install within DS uses Daz Connect, which places its files in a different location, so yes it would fetch fresh copies of everything. If you did install some files through Connect then it should notice the files and just check they are current, but I've had limited success with that.
If you still have the zips it may be simplest to just let Install Manager reinstall everything.
Thanks again for your response, Richard!
I initially installed this all via DIM, and I specified in DIM a library location on a larger hard drive separate from the main one with the programs and OS on it. Since I used DIM, and I chose to delete all of the downloads, I did not keep the zip files.
1) All of the content downloaded via DIM to this external drive, and that's where the library is. When I refreshed Windows, I only wiped and reloaded the primary (C:) with the OS and the applications on it. I re-installed DIM, used DIM to re-install DS 4.15, and then I went into the DIM settings and pointed all of the library and path stuff to that external location. in DIM, after I refreshed it, I see all of the items in the "Installed" tab, as it was before I reloaded everything.
2) Now, when I loaded up DS, I went into the Content Directory Manager and edited all of the paths to be the locations on that external drive that already existed. After applying, I saw that it was updating all of the items, and as I refreshed the list in Smart Content more and more of the icons appeared (although they were grey). That's pretty much where I am at.
I DO have all access to the content in the Content Library Tab, however, and if I right-click on any of the smart-content items that are greyed out I can choose to show the item in the Content Library, so this is a good workaround for now because I can use Smart Content to filter and find my items (all of the categories work and everything), but instead of loading from Smart Content I can have it take me to it's place in the Content Library.
I suspect you are right about it just being easier to allow DIM to do its job again. I don't have that kind of data available to me at home, but I can take the machine to work and use our corporate network to pull all of the stuff down, so I think that's probably the right course of action here. This way, I know that it's all re-installed fresh, all of the management links are in the right place, and I'm back to where I started. I feel like deleting my 1.5 TB of library data is a bit of a waste, but I suppose so was blasting away my computer just to "refresh it", so that's on me.
Thanks for confirming what I was worried about with regards to Daz Connect installing... I would have been really frustrated with myself if I chose to download them all again, used up all of my space, AND incurred overage charges in the process, so just re-downloading is the right way to go here most likely.
I do appreciate you chiming in to help!

Why is it that clicking on DOWNLOAD DAZ STUDIO (on the main page) takes me to a page where I can download Daz Central, and Daz Central only? This place is like a psyop.
DIM is still here, but very, very, very hard to find ... don't ask me about my opinion about Daz Central.
https://www.daz3d.com/install-manager-info/
I'd be fine with DIM not being there, but I clicked on text that said DOWNLOAD DAZ STUDIO, and there's NO DAZ STUDIO. After hearing all the horror stories from the hapless guinea pigs, I mean, first adopters of Daz Central, I never went near it, although it is deceptively placed everywhere so that it can be inadvertently downloaded. Somebody must get a commission for Daz Central downloads.

Daz crashes when trying to render 3+ G8s (ACCESS_VIOLATION error)stemyl said:
It is some time now that Daz Studio crashes when I try to render 3 or more G8 characters. I can work with them, set the scene, lights, and so on, but when I try to render, Daz crashes.
I have no problem rendering 1 or 2 G8 characters (2 G8F, 2 G8M, 1 G8M + 1 G8F -- no difference at all) within a scene with lights and so on. But if I load a third character and try to render, Daz crashes.
In the past, I've never experienced such a problem. I could render 3+ characters in the same scene. Maybe I had trouble rendering 4+ characters (slow downs, long waiting time before the start of the rendering, ..), but never a crash that I can recall of.
Trying to understand what is causing the crashes, I loaded 3 Base G8 characters, without anything else (base skins, no body morphs, no hair, no clothes, no objects, no lights, ...). The rendering works.
Then I loaded 3 customized G8 characters (with their skins and morphs, but no hair, no clothes, no objects, no lights, ...). And the rendering works.
Then I loaded hair and clothes for each of these characters, one set at a time. The rendering worked with 3 characters and 1 set of hair+clothes and with 3 characters and 2 sets of hair+clothes. But when I loaded the third set of hair+clothes and tried to render, Daz Studio crashed.
It may be a corrupted clothes or hair, but it happens with different content all the time, so it is probably something different?
This is the error I got: "DAZStudio.exe caused ACCESS_VIOLATION in module "C:\Daz 3D\Applications\64-bit\DAZ 3D\DAZStudio4\libs\iray\libiray.dll" at 0033:0000000077F9E8D0, mi_plugin_factory()+132864 byte(s)"
I'm using Daz Studio 4.15.0.2 (64-bit) with Windows 10 Home, Intel Core i7-8750H CPU @ 2.20GHz, 16Gb RAM. GPUs: Intel UHD Graphics 630 and GeForce GTX 1660 Ti {GeForce Drivers ver. 461.09 (released 07 January 2021) [clean installation]}
It is worth mentioning that my content library is splitted on 2 external HDD (I have almost 2Tb of content so... there isn't really anything else I can do about it), while Daz Studio is installed in C:\DAZ3D.
I've always used Manual Installation for multiple reason.I suspect that the issues started when I was forced to install and use DAZ CENTRAL to install the new versions of Daz Studio (so around 4.14 I think? Or was 4.13?). But maybe I'm wrong and there are other problems (Daz Central caused many other issues, but that's another story for other posts : -p).
I searched the forum and found multiple threads regarding ACCESS_VIOLATION errors, but couldn't find any solution for my specific case. If I've missed anything, please post the link to the correct thread.
Thank you!You could disable the Intel GPU in the motherboard bios to minimize it's negative influence.

manual download and DIM do not include the files with the character (kind of a LARGE oversite for a flagship product launch)
They are not missing, since they are not part of Victoria 8.1.
Some of those files belong to "Genesis 8 Female Starter Essentials" and some are part of "Default Resources for DAZ Studio 4.51", you need to update those to have the "missing" files.

Maybe try just that 3rd hair. Some of the "Iray" shaders being used on some hairs apparently have issues. Solution is to apply a different shader to it.
Also check that the video card drivers are up-to-date. Studio drivers can be downloaded from the nVidia website.
It should not have anything to do with Daz Central.
Thank you Catherine3678ab.
The videocard drivers are up-to-date (although I'm not sure what you mean by "Studio drivers"?).
I cited Daz Central not because I think it could be the direct cause of the crashes, but because it is very clunky in managing different installation directories and it caused other issues (in my peculiar situation, I'm not talking in general)..On the hairs: I can check them further, with more trials, and and also using different shaders, ok. But the strange thing is that the crashes occur with different hairs every time, and when there are only 2 characters (with hair) there are no crashes (nor slowing down in the rendering process -- on the contrary, with 2 characters Iray renders are fast, faster than they've ever been before).

You'd need to contact support. However, if it's crashing about the time it is building the interface it could be corrupt layout files. With DS closed go to
%AppData%/daz 3d/studio4/
(on Windows just paste that into a file browser's address bar) and remove the layout.dsx file, then try starting DS. If that still doesn't work remove any fresh copy of that file plus actions.dsx, customactions.dsx, menus.dsx and toolbars.dsx and see if DS will launch.

Daz Central's "Daz Studio" includes the base cotnent as well as the application.
I'm just advising how it seems to work and the issues we had, in case there's something that needs to be fixed. Ther was a separate product under My Library in Central which was the G8 Starter Essentials. I had to uninstall and reinstall this to get 8.1. It now seems to be gone from Daz Central, the other Genesis Starter Essentials are still there.
