  • Dform Tool, What Next?

You have to select the object/figure to which the dFormer is applied. Then open the dFormer pane and "spawn to morph". The morph will be added to the parameters pane/morphs. After that you can delete the dFormer and dial in the morph instead.

    Fantastic

  • so if an animation is saved using genesis it works on Genesis 3

So I got it figured out. Here's how you get Mixamo animations work with Genesis 8.

    1) Download the desired animation as FBX from mixamo (I used Aiko 6 as fbx avatar)

    2) Open up Daz3D

    3) Import the FBX from mixamo

    4) load up Genesis 1 figure

    5) select the fbx imported avatar and create aniblock from imported fbx animation.

    6) Copy it to genesis 1

    7) delete the fbx import

    8) Bake genesis 1 aniblock to timeline

    9) Save as Pose Preset (make sure to chose Animation Range)

    10) Open a new scene in Daz

    11) Load up Genesis 8

    12) Make sure you have this installed: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/176806/g3f-to-g8f-pose-helper

    13) Apply G3F Pose Helper morph to 100%

    14) Drag the .duf file on top of Genesis 8.

    15) Be happy that you found an easy way to make G8 work with mixamo.

For me step 5 was a failure.  I mean it worked by it introduced some pretty nasty foot-sliding all over the place.  It's pretty much unusable for me.

  • Does hair do the most to make Genesis 8 characters unique? Clothing? Morphs?

Yes, I would generally agree that hair is one of the biggest things.

I morphed up a model for a character I play in a tabletop roleplaying game. She's supposed to be (the space equivalent of) mixed-race West African/East Asian, and depending on whether I gave her straight black hair or curly black hair while trying to pick a style, she frequently ended up looking completely unrelated to herself. (Eventually I opted to dial the actual morph to be more Asian and go with the African hair to try to hit a compromise where she did look reasonably mixed-race).

  • DAZ Base Models for Modeling Purposes

So just so I understand: I can't import the Genesis 8 figure into ZBrush in order to sculpt clothes or hair that fit the Genesis 8 mesh?

As you've phrased that slightly ambiguously, I'll answer specifically.

You cannot sculpt the Genesis 8 figure in order to create clothing/hair for distribution. Sculpting the figure itself would only be acceptable for the purpose of creating a figure morph. (Which would then have to be distributed in Daz morph format, which cannot be reverse engineered to get the original geometry).

However, it would be acceptable to import the shape as a reference (obviously, to create clothing that fits G8, you have to know what shape it is), or to sculpt clothing/hair for personal use only, given that Daz's EULA specifically permits the modification of assets in the pursuit of creating your own artwork.

  • DSON importer plugin for Blender

TL;DR - I don't think Daz will venture into building plugins for other software for reasons outlined below.  Putting in a feature request by way of a help ticket is probably your best way to raise the possibility.  If they got enough such requests they may look into it.

This idea has come up on the forums before, and as then I'm curious what it is you would want this importer plugin to do that is not done by the currently available tools - OBJ/FBX transfer, mcjTeleBlender (pending update for Blender 2.80), Thomas Larsson's 'Import Daz' plugin (2.80 compatible already).  Certainly, none of these is perfect, I find in particular the material conversion to either Cycles or EEVEE is weak and requires signficant additional work.  But then whatever Daz might do would not - could not - suit the needs of everyone.  Is it simply a matter of wanting maximum convenience - one-click in Daz Studio and - boom! - your scene appears in Blender, ready to render/animate?  Corporate support over one person efforts?  Something else?

As to why Daz haven't done it so far, the only answer can be economics.  They'll do it when they think it will pay, by increasing sales of Daz assets to Blender users to a sufficient degree.  The release of 2.80 will surely increase Blender user numbers, but even so It would really surprise me if there are enough potential Daz asset buyers who are holding off simply because the transfer to Blender is too much of a hurdle for them.  If you want to render stills using Daz assets, then you either prefer Cycles over Iray strongly enough, or want EEVEE enough, to surmout the hurdle, or you use Iray in DS.  If you want to animate in Blender, then you need a good IK-enabled rig, which Daz models lack (at least for now).  (Thomas Larsson's plugin has an option to convert the Daz rig to Rigify, but I've not tried it so don't know how well that works.)

Daz could probably more readily make and market Blender-ready versions of their original figures, with an IK rig and materials modified for Cycles and/or EEVEE.

I think it's also significant that Daz haven't made plugins to help transfer to other software like 3DS Max, Maya etc. where their assets might be used.  Only ZBrush, a while back, and nothing else since.  Daz don't seem interested in this kind of thing now.  I guess the floor is open to a third party to fill the vacuum if they think it worthwhile.

And then there's possible licencing issues, Blender being GPL and all.  Daz does not seem like an open source kind of company really.

  • help setting up specific Morph in link below

These are custom morphs, all you need to use them is the Genesis 8 Female Base figure from the Genesis 8 starter essentials pack.

It's a morph only pack though, it won't give you the textures or other items used in promo renders.

Not sure if it's a shape I can use.  The face morph is lovely but the skin tones on a good many of the skin offerings look like white girls, even the base skin.  I live in a building that's predominantly Latin and these skins all look "off" or too white to my eyes.  There are a couple that are good like Leticia, Maia  and Gale.  There is also Micaela but she looks more like a light skinned black woman to me.... I guess it's all subjective.... If your not hanging around the Latin community on an everyday basis and all you have are the pretty made up chicas that are trying to look like white chicks you find on line as examples you don't get what the skin tones actually look like in real life settings!

  • Feet HD Detail (Or Lack Thereof)

Excellent job Necriseye!  I'm with you....I had to make my own foot morphs.  I really don't like those grooves in the balls of the feet.  Congrats to you on a job well done.

Hmm excellent job on the foot morph, particularly with the toes my friend. Glad other people are spearheading this issue with me, I felt pretty lonely for some time haha.
Is that hd detail your own or is it part of another morph? Would be great if an artist with access to the HD tool was working on this too.

You're welcome:) Ye... That decrack morph is kinda hard to get right as a universal solution.

Your three- or four-tiered method could be the way to go? Top, middle, lower, smoothing?

  • Fit Control Add-On (Commercial)

Since this has popped back up to the top of the cue, I want to take the opportunity to give a fanboyingly effusive "THANK YOU" to Zev0 for Fit Control, the Add-On, and for implementing my requested morphs in the Add-On!!! Thanks to you and Fit Control, I have absolute confidence whenever I need to drape a conforming item without dForce. I start convinced that Fit Control has the tools to realistically fit clothes to figures. And when I'm finished, my prior convictions are confirmed. Good on ya, mate!

Now, if I only had a glute decrack morph that didn't add a vestigial tail hump.

just buy as many morph packs as you can and make your own using the G8 Base model

if your happy, just export it to obj or fbx, and clear the morph data to speed up the importing and use of the final model
