  • No Bundle for the new Legacy shapes for G2F & M?

    Slosh said:

I just bought some new UV software that is making the process about 45% easier than when I did Michael 4 (% is arbitrary, but it's not a huge amount easier). Depending on how long D5 takes and how well the UVs come out, coupled with enough interest shown, I will do the others. I started a thread awhile back trying to see how much interest there was and the thread fizzled pretty quickly. This is part of the reason DAZ and I discussed about making the shapes by themselves and holding off on the UVs. They haven't said "no", but more of a "let's wait and see." So, if you guys want the UVs done, please campaign for it. I'm ready and willing to do the work.

    Thanks!

It's a sad state of affairs that if you by the D5 Pro Bundle you have pretty much bought everything ever made for him. Still, David has always played second fiddle to Michael, Jepe did some nice stuff for D3 but that was about it. It makes you wonder how well male equivalents of Gia and Olympia would fare, if they're even being developed.

Congratulations for making what you have made though and I hope to see more

I would not say that at all. As for Autofit, there are already clones available for V4 and M4, which would effectively include Aiko 4 and the rest of the Generation 4 figures, and each of those clones comes with UVs as well. As for D5, A5 and the rest, Genesis clothes already fit Genesis 2 via Autofit. For the UVs, I have been working on those as well. Right now, I am working on David 5. Whether or not DAZ accepts it remains to be seen. If it works out, I will begin work on the other figures UVs, but there has to be enough interest from the community to make the time consuming process worth it. If I spend a week or two on each set and only 10 people want it (exaggerated of course), then it might not be a good idea.

I really think you should lobby hard to get the D5 UV accepted by Daz, ok he doesn't have much of a back catalogue, but, the textures that were made for him were brilliant and deserve to be used on G2.

I think Daz's decision to use figure specific UV's could come back to bite them, especially if they don't give Gia or Olympia time to grow before bringing something else out.

CypherFox is exactly right. We set it up this way so that people can buy any combination of the bundles they want. When trying to set up bundles, we didn't want to have so many that it got confusing, ie. All Males, All Females, All Generation 4, All Generation 5, etc. This way, if all you want is the Generation 5 Males and the Generation 4 Females, you don't have to buy the ones you don't want.

This is great news Slosh, regarding UV's! I am a bit confused though as to the difference between this and the M4/V4 shapes you've already released for G2, with the exception of the extra gen 4 shapes you get in the bundle...

I decided to include V4 and M4 shapes in their respective Legacy sets because some people may only want the shapes and not care about the UVs and clothing for those figures. Granted, there might not be a huge amount of people who fit that description, but there will be a few. This way, yes you will end up with two copies of V4 or M4, depending on what you buy/have bought. I named the V4 and M4 in the Legacy sets a little differently so that they show up separate from MallenLane's V4 product and my own M4 product. In order to keep the collections complete, it was necessary to include them. I also included the Basic Female and Basic Male from Genesis in each set, but since they all write to the same data folder, only one copy of each will show in your Shaping Tab.

If you already have Victoria 4 for Genesis 2 Female(s) or Michael 4 for Genesis 2 Male(s), then the only thing you gain from these Legacy sets is the additional male or female shapes. I just couldn't see forcing people to buy either of the two above products in addition to the Legacy sets in order to get the full set.

So we should take it as given that we are not going to get autofit clones for these figures, OR specialized UVs. DAZ is not prepared to make them, so we will have to be content with only the shapes.

Isn't that what these are for? They add V4/M4 UVs to G2F/G2M, and I was always under the assumption that all Gen4 females shared the same UV and Gen4 males shared the same UV.

    http://www.daz3d.com/michael-4-for-genesis-2-male

    http://www.daz3d.com/michael-4-skins-auto-converter-for-genesis-2-male-s

(last 2 aren't required but make it easier)

    /edit
I think Genesis' default UVs were V4/M4's anyways, and G2F/G2M can use V5/M5's out of the box. Very few skins used the Basic Female/Male UVs.

Hitomi has her own UVs (as well as some beasties), which to my knowledge hasn't been ported over and can't using current methods.

  • (Commercial) NOW IN STORE - Sickle Rigging And Morphing System

Would SRMS work for Genesis 2 with gen4 clone figures such as Michael 4 for Genesis 2 Male ? I've had some success using it to rig a gen4 for Genesis, then taking that saved asset and transferring it using autofit for Genesis 2. Maybe with the clone figure SRMS would work even better than autofitting?

  • Genesis (and other Daz characters) not importing BVH data correctly?

There's nothing wrong with DAZ's BVH import. The discrepancies you get are based on the figures skeleton layout the motions were created with. DAZ's figures have a slightly different and/or advanced skeleton layout (bones' zero positions, number of bones, naming of bones) than those of the basic figures the different software are shipped with. Same goes even to motions created for the 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th generation of DAZ figures. Applying an animation made for the 4th generation on a figure of the 5th f.e. gives some crappy results (feet pointing upward, "John-Wayne-walk", etc.).

I've read somewhere that the "iPi Motion Capture Studio" software (http://ipisoft.com/) has a built-in feature that allows to transfer rigging for imported skeletons. Didn't had the chance to test that 'cause this software is f'n expensive.

Mixamo's (http://www.mixamo.com) online editor has the ability to apply the pre-rigged skeleton layout for different figures (Mixamo's own, generic and even DAZ's Victoria/Michael 4) within the workspace and export the motions as BVH, Fbx, etc. Works perfectly.
Of course this works only on the motions Mixamo sells themselves, I haven't found yet and I doubt there is any option to import own motions and transfer them to various figures. They also offer the ability to import an own figure through their Auto-Rigger (with the abilty for manually adjustments).

Yes, I've had success applying the free motions from the Mixamo store on current DAZ figures (Genesis, Genesis 2 Female). In their editor I applied the rigging for DAZ Studio characters and exported the motion as a BVH and imported it in DAZ Studio using the basic Genesis figure. Then I created an aniBlock from it. Since there are some differences between Gen4 and Gen5 figures' skeletons I applied an additional aniBlock on a subtrack for corrections (http://www.sharecg.com/v/67223/view/21/DAZ-Studio/Genesis-Pose-Adjust-aniBlock).
Within aniMate you're able to bake the animation to Studio Keyframes and then create an own new aniBlock to avoid the neccessarity to always apply the correction one on a subtrack. Should also work with exporting the motions as a BVH.

  • carrara tutorial sale

    Dartanbeck,

I am having issues with Cararar Pro 8.5 with Genesis and the Parameters thing (and even having some issues with V4 clothing, like where are the morphs!). Even finding and adding the DAZ and Poser Runtimes are a PITA for me.

I have only been using Carrara for importing of and rendering of Wavefront Object models of space ships, etc., but only now because I am trying to move to Carrara from DAZ Studio for the toon rendering I am starting to use Victoria/Michael 4 and Genesis V5/M5 in Carrara.

Anyway, I purchased the Carrara 8.5 Tutorial Video (the basics) and hopefully it is as you imagine, that it will be as good as the advanced version and it will help me out.

  • Is Carrara able to read poser files?

    RitaCeleste said:
Does it need poser's runtime as opposed to just the files arranged as they would be in a runtime? A lot of the old poser files are zip files with where they would go in the poser runtime. Would that kind of file work without buying Poser?
It does not need Poser at all. Products made for use in Poser, as you've mentioned, come organized into a 'runtime' structure. You just need a folder where those runtime folders go. I wrote a short article regarding custom runtimes: Daz Install Manager - Installing Custom Poser Runtimes, which includes info about making these directories using the DIM (DAZ Install Manager), but that part is not necessary either. Like you say, many Poser files come in a zip. Inside that zip is a folder named 'runtime'. You simply drag that into one of your folders that contains a runtime. Very simple.

How does the scene creation features compare with Bryce? I have noticed the Darkworld product for Carrara and the other scenes for Carrara look really nice. Its something I would have to save up for, but Carrara looks like a much better deal than Poser. And even though Blender is free, it seems like Carrara would save me a lot of time when working with Daz files and figures.

Scene creation in Carrara doesn't seem at all similar to Bryce, as far as what I can see... but I've yet to learn Bryce. Making scenes in Carrara is as easy as it gets though. And you're right. Howie Farkes' Darkenwold is amazing, as are his other scenes - and many others, too.

I was in the same frame of mind as you, when I first found Carrara. I couldn't believe my eyes - as it has seemed impossible to find software like this before. Something that can work with Poser and DS content, while also being a modeler, it's a dream come true.

I know how to model, but it takes a lot of time - and I wanted to spend more of my time arranging and rendering than modeling, yet I wanted to have the modeling capabilities for, as you've said, tweaking and making morphs. Carrara is amazing at this stuff. I'm not sure what you mean by G2 - if you're talking about Poser models, I guess some of the latest ones with Poser weight mapping might not work so well in Carrara. But I think G2 was from Poser 7 or 8, and might be just fine. However, DAZ 3D's Generation 4 models, like Michael 4 and Victoria 4 and their expansive range of shapes, textures and other support products, are amazingly great to work with in Carrara. Ringo (above) is doing a lot of work with Genesis and the Genesis 2 models - which require the latest Carrara 8.5, and are exceptional models.

The PC Membership was my first stop. I had saved and saved (actually my wife did that part for me), and wanted to place one big order. So I started with the Platinum Club for a year. That came with a bunch of cool free stuff, so I got that stuff all taken care of right away. What a blast! Now that my account shown me as a PC member, I ordered the rest. Lots of great stuff! I have invested so much heart and soul into M4 and V4 characters in Carrara, that I'm actually being a little slow about getting into the newer Genesis stuff. Besides, there's a lot more long hair for V4 and M4 than for anything else right now anyways.

Being a PC member has allowed me to build a really sweet library of 'this' and 'that's over the years. Lots of hair, costumes, scenery props, vehicles, gadgets.... Some of the stuff even came free! But the PC 1.99 product list is huge and it has saved me so much that my wife and I have determined that I'll be a PC member for the rest of my life - for the most part.

Since Genesis, PC has offered some amazing products for outfitting that figure, and now for Genesis 2 as well. Knowing that I would be upgrading to Carrara 8.5 as soon as it was released, like I did, I decided to collect this and that for Genesis, even before I actually started using it much. This worked out great. Now I have Genesis 1, which is male or female or monster or... and a whole slew of clothes and hair for it. Now my collecting begins for Genesis 2. I still collect items for V4 and M4 too, since they are such excellent models, I think I might just keep using them with the new ones.

My decision to go to Carrara is now considered to be my favorite software purchase to date. I find it to be easier than Poser and DAZ Studio. And since I can set up the render engine to be really fast, that speed makes things easier too. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot more to Carrara than the others. It seems it can do anything! But when using it like Poser or DS, it works the same way, somewhat, and is very easy to use. Great interface. The more advanced stuff is not a burden at all. It doesn't sit there in front of you in the interface, standing in your way. There really isn't anything daunting about using Carrara's interface. It's very friendly. When you decide to use physics, you'll do it, which will offer you the controls you need. Until then, the stuff that makes it work is completely out of your way. When you want to work on textures, you'll amaze at how cool the Texture room is. Most everything in Carrara is easy to do, and easy to learn. Yet you may still jump into some incredibly complex situations as well, if that's what you like. It caters to us all.

Lee was on the way to his wedding, when his rented truck had a flat tire on the deserted country road at sunrise. Lee was getting panicky. He was going to miss his own wedding! Just then a motorcycle drove up. “What’s the trouble, kid?”, the biker asked. “I’m supposed to get married at noon, and my truck has a flat with a spare that doesn’t even fit. They roared through the countryside and entered the city. The rain subsided, but the city streets were still flooded. As they approached the railroad crossing they heard the train horn. It sounded close! “Hang on, kid!”, yelled the biker,“We can beat this train. It’s the only way to make it in time.” Sparks flew as the Parkside Cargo engineer hit the brakes hard, trying not to strike the motorcycle directly in his path.

  • Buying action aniblocks

I know, I'm on a roll today. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me which sword aniblocks are the best. It's between Sword & Shield Bones animation pack; Swordplay Sword and shield vol 1 (I'm not sure but I think you can slim down the double blocks to do only one move); DB animation kit - Swordworks (It says it's for Michael 4. I'm wondering if V4 could use them too cause sometimes someone else can use them). I want to get going so please help me pick the best.

  • Is it possible to use Genesis Mats & Generation 4 Mats with Genesis 2 Characters?

Yes, the reason for using Michael 4 if possible is that Genesis doesn't have the eye surface material that M4 and G2M have so you will lose that if you use Genesis to create .duf presets for M4 textures, but as long as G2M has the needed UV set Genesis materials presets in .duf format will work on it.

  • A DAZ Newbie's Guide to The Figures

This is so I and others can just link back to this explanation instead of having to retype it, since this is a common point of confusion to newcomers. The DAZ store doesn't make it immediately clear what is a figure and what is a morph, and we want to get newcomers oriented and creating as quickly as possible, so here's how that works.

    The figures and morphs:

Victoria and Michael through V3, M3, S3, etc.:

These are DAZ legacy figures that were made to work mostly in Poser. They are in the .cr2 format.

    Generation 3 was especially prolific:

    Victoria 3
    Michael 3
    Stephanie Petite
Luke and Laura 3, also called "Millenium Kids" or "Young Teens 3" or "YT3"
    Hiro 3
    Aiko 3
    Freak 3
    David 3

This generation is also when the Baby, Cat and Dog came out. Every one of these is a separate figure that can't wear the clothes of the others, and most have separate UV maps as well.

Victoria 4, Michael 4, and the Kids 4:

These are referred to as "Generation 4" or "Gen 4." They are also in .cr2 format, although I believe this generation was the first to start offering dedicated materials for DAZ Studio in addition to the Poser materials. These are still popular with Poser users, and outfits for V4 in particular still get made, although not as commonly in the DAZ store.

V4, M4, and K4 are all separate figures. Everything else with "4" in the name is a morph of one of the others. All have separate UV maps, although with some fiddling they can be made to share.

    For V4: Girl 4, She-freak 4, Aiko 4, Stephanie 4

    For M4: Hiro 4, Freak 4

    For each: Morphs++, Muscular morphs

    Genesis and the 5 Series:

Genesis, retroactively referred to as G1 (not official, but convenient), is a fully unisex base figure and the first DAZ native to be offered in .dsa and .duf, not just in .cr2. This is the point when Poser became "supported" instead of the native platform.

Genesis has UVs from Generation 4 plus its own Generation 5. It so far does not have Generation 3 UVs. This means it can use many textures that were originally made for Michael 4 and Victoria 4.

There is a HUGE list of morphs for this figure, whether male, female or creature. A partial list includes:

    Victoria 3, 4, 5
    Michael 3, 4, 5
    David 3, 5
    Freak 3, 4, 5
    Stephanie 4, 5
    Aiko 3, 4, 5
    Hiro 3, 4, 5
Young Teens 5 (Julie and Justin)
The Troll, Mr. Hyde, Undead Fiend, and Behemoth
    The Creature Creator morphs
    Evolution head and body morphs
    Muscle morphs

(And many excellent unofficial morphs as well, which it would take too long to list.)

Any time you see the number "5" after something, it is usually a morph of Genesis 1. Check carefully because there are morphs for Genesis that imitate generations 3 and 4, but are not separate figures; they are available in "legacy" packs. Always read the description before buying.

Genesis 2 and the 6 Series:

Genesis 2 is another DAZ native with Poser support. Instead of being one figure with morphs for all characters, it is now two figures, Genesis 2 Female and Genesis 2 Male. So far characters for these mostly have 6 in the name, except for Olympia and Gia, who did not exist in previous generations. Official morph creation for them is ongoing where it is probably complete for Genesis 1.

Genesis 2 has UVs from Generation 5 and 6 natively. Add-on products are needed to use Generation 4 UVs. See compatibility section for more on this.

Genesis 2 Female: Young Teen 6 (Josie), Victoria 4, Victoria 6, Gia, Olympia, G2F Head And Body Morphs

    Genesis 2 Male: Michael 4, Michael 6

    Genitalia

Separate conforming genitals were offered for Generations 3 through 6. Generation 3 and 4 have female genital creases offered with Morphs++ but not separate female conformers.

In Generation 3 they are available with purchase of M3 Morphs++ only.

In Generation 4 they are available with purchase of the M4 Morphs++ only.

In Genesis/Generation 5, they are available with purchase of an M5 Pro bundle only (and V5 pro bundle for the new Female genitalia conformer).

In Genesis 2/Generation 6, they are available with purchase of any Pro bundle (not just V6 and M6 but the female gens also are included with Olympia Pro bundle, etc.).

    Clothing And UV Compatibility

Most clothing is meant to be used with the generation it was made for, so check product pages to see if it is for V3, V4, etc.

Generation 3 textures cannot be used on any other figures except by using something like the Texture Converter program. Generation 3 clothing can sometimes be used on Genesis if one has the Legacy Shapes pack, which adds clothing clones for them. The Autofit conversion is not as good as with G4 sometimes.

Generation 4 textures can sometimes be used on other G4 figures by loading alternate UVs in DAZ Studio (not in Poser).

In order to use Generation 4 textures on Genesis one must have the V4 and M4 shapes for Genesis. These also have the clothing clones that allow Generation 4 clothing to be used on Genesis through Autofit.

In order to use Generation 4 textures on G2, one must have the Victoria 4 and/or Michael 4 add-ons for Genesis 2 Female and/or Genesis 2 Male. These also enable the use of Gen 4 clothing on the G2's through Autofit.

Generation 5 textures natively work on Genesis and Genesis 2 UVs.

Genesis 2 has a different material zone setup that can only accept materials in .duf format. If a texture set has materials in .dsa format, they must be converted by loading onto Genesis 1 and saving back to the library as .duf, or loaded using Draagonstorm's V4 and M4 Auto Converter products (which will load Generation 5 UV .dsa mats as well).

    Morphs

Normally, morphs for any given generation cannot be used on the others. So if you buy a character for Victoria 4, while you may be able to use the textures on Genesis and load them on Genesis 2 with Draagonstorm's products, you will not be able to use the face morph or dialed preset that is included.

Similarly, you cannot use a morph for Genesis on Genesis 2 Female and Male or vice versa.

There are ways around this. Generation X, for sale in the DAZ store, makes it possible to convert morphs from Generation 4 to Genesis. Morphs from Genesis can be converted to Genesis 2 using the Transfer Utility, although this takes some work. Tutorials are available on my deviantart page linked in my signature and in Kattey's massive "Now with Clones" thread here on the forum.

Morphs can be converted between Genesis 2 Female and Genesis 2 Male fairly quickly, by copying them from one set of data folders to the other and text-editing them. Again, see Kattey's thread.

    Entry Title: Fear of Flying
    Artist Name: PhilW
Summary Description: A newly created angel has to come to terms with his new found abilities, not least of which is a fear of heights and of flying - without a plane!

Link to at least one WIP Posting: http://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/33911/P90/#508445

List of all created or significantly enhanced objects:
The main title was done in Carrara's text editor and then edited some more in the vertex editor, and I created all the buildings in background city below. I also created the cloud dome (although this is a product!) and the realistic sky had a fair amount of tweaking. Lighting is from the realistic sky with a Sun Light (with flare), an extra Spot to illuminate the foreground figure better, and a light linked to the text so that the face stood out a little more.
    DAZ Shop items:
Michael 4, V4 Creature Wings, Divinity Skies (which is the close up building).

Postwork - other text added in Photoshop and image adjusted for levels, highlights on the text.

Happy New Year to you all!

  • Help, I need a face from one m4 to another m4, how do?

    Kattey said:
I don't know specifics of your morph but usually the easiest way is to:
    1. Make sure that you Michael 4 on lowest resolution. Zero it.
    2. Dial your morphs to get that custom face you want.
    3. Export as Wavefront obj. The scale for export and import should be consistent (I usually use Hexagon 1 unit = 1 cm, 100%), Ignore invisible nodes checked, Export with Existing groups checked, everything else can be unchecked.
    4. After that load your fresh M4, zero it and use Morph Loader Pro or Morph Loader Advanced to import that obj to make a morph.

Saving that kind of morph might be tricky: it supposed to save it with a scene but you might end up loading the obj-as-morph every time you need that custom morph.

There is a way to make morph injectable so you'd be able to inject it into any kind of M4 without going through export/import but I only know DS route and I'm not sure that scripts that worked for this purpose in DS 3 are still working or available for DS 4.6.

    I am using Poser though...
