Totte I installed the first set of content that Daz Studio needs from the DIM then I installed the content I have in my backup with rendoinstall. Saturday morning Genesis8female worked with no problem but after I installed my additional content is when it looks like my earlier post. I even tried to reinstall Genesis 8 female starter again with no help.

That sounds like you have installed a broken morph, probably from a non DAZ product or freebee. Did you install the "non DAZ" content into it's own Content Library? Best to do that, then you can disable that in DS and if it works, you know what the problem is.

  • Question on April YSH Hair

I was looking through the newest bundle release and saw this hair https://www.daz3d.com/peony-hair-for-genesis-3-and-8-females
It looks like a great hair product, but can the horn things be hidden?

Yes, this would be interesting. I didn't find any 'off' morph in the list.

  • Face Tranfer for G8 m/f

    Hello Folks!
Anyone some Experience with the Plugin 'Face-Transfer' of DS 4.12 for G8?
Made some nice Tryout with various Photos so I think, I will purchase it. But IRAY-Render seems to make the Eyeballs look like washed up with Tear-Gas.
Anyone an Idea how to fix it?

  • Why Does It Take So Long To Load Figures? ("Solved", with GUIDE)

When tracking problematic morps, wanting to speed-up the loading process or save the RAM, you can go into the morph folder and make a zip-file out of the contents, the you can delete the morph-files. DS-doesn't find them in the zip-file and if you do need the files back, you can just unzip them back.

Whatever the reason for disabling morps, this is a good way to start, even if you wanted to remove them completely.

Another way is to rename the files individually with an extension you can easily find, ie. Sunshine.duf -> Sunshine.duf.xxx

Thank you for the info! :D

The fact is that I make stories, so I have created tons of characters, that I need to access sooner or later, and I have to have many morphs available to create new ones.

So that's not viable for me.

As I've said before, it took me days just to check if I needed the figures I had uninstalled, and I had to reinstall 1/3 of them.

  • Character Dial-Spinning Best Practices

I always just work off the morph packs, I never start with a premade character, and don't use any amount of premade character in the faces I try to create.

It helps me to have some sort of reference or goal in mind to guide the shape - could be someone I knew, an actor, something like that. Having photo references approaching the desired result is helpful. I may not arrive at an exact likeness (sometimes I get pretty close), but it helps drive things in a more realistic direction.

  • Character Dial-Spinning Best Practices

You could also try using Shape Splitter (formerly X-Morphs) to split specific parts of a morph from another. If you like a certain's character's nose, for example, you could totally use Shape Splitter to make a morph of just that nose and add it to your morph library. Its also great for splitting those characters that have head and body as a single morph (which I detest but thankfully is rare now). Its a very cool product to play with.

But yeah, like Diva said there is no right or wrong way to do anything, as long as you get to what you want it doesn't matter how you get there. I don't think there is any faster way if that is what you are looking for. I do think Rarestone's 200 shaping morphs are awesome. She made one each for male and female and they have a lot of unique and very specific morphs that nobody else has.

There is also a randomizer script product too. I do not have this myself, but it could be a fun thing to play with when you have no idea of what you want. It has some options in how you set it up.

It seems like every time I hit more than 50% blending different characters I start to get weird distortions  (face sucks in, face shrinks, weird angles, etc).

Do you happen to have Auto Face Enhancer installed?

I second that about the Rarestone packs. I've made a couple of really interesting looking characters and some that won't be seen for the safety of everyone's eyes- but had fun making them all. There is sooooo much there to customize- nose tip tilt, nostril arcs, cheekbones, eyelids, dimples, creases, face shapes, etc with nice pictures to give you an idea of what you'll be editing. I keep hearing good things about the Shape Splitter one and will definitely be checking it out as well. Personally I find that characters that are kind of similar or made by the same artist give me the best results dialed in less than 50%. It seems like every time I hit more than 50% blending different characters I start to get weird distortions  (face sucks in, face shrinks, weird angles, etc).

That doesn't sound right at all! There has to be a conflict between the characters causing that, like their shapes are somehow overlapping. I haven't seen this.

Take a look at the parameters tab and the current morphs with one of the problem morphs dialed in. Make sure the option to show hidden values is on. Now scroll through the parameters and look to see that other characters are not listed. The exception to this would be characters based on a Daz Original like Michael. If you see characters that don't belong on the list of used morphs, then that product needs to be fixed. This would be something to file a support ticket for.

In the short term, you can dial the extra character shapes out if you do see this, and they should look like they are intended to. There could also be other things causing it, which again, would be something to file a support ticket for. It may be as simple as characters sharing the same name. That's never good.

  • Animated fireplace fire?

Hey, @Gordig, assumes "pieces" not in evidence. sad I'll keep you in mind, though, if bigger budget projects come along!

Thanks for the ideas, @benniewoodell, but I'm kind of bloody-minded about doing it all in one DS pass, if I can pull it off, and usually I can. I've only dabbled in Blender, and for this limited project would be too much of a learning curve for me to invest.

    https://www.renderosity.com/mod/freestuff/?item_id=76201

Morph for that one looks interesting, and its free.

Thanks, Wolfwood! Had no idea that one existed, so have addded it to the "flickering fireplace" arsenal. I'm even thinking that it may work combining one of the morphing flame gadgets with mCasual's fireplace rig. Will be testing it later this week.

ETA: I hate autocorrect with an immeasurable passion.

  • Why Does It Take So Long To Load Figures? ("Solved", with GUIDE)

Yes, we do uninstall and save on other media or another drive what we don't need. It's been that way forever. I leave most everything I don't need right away on DAZ servers. Download when I need it. If it's something I really like I keep it on a backup drive. I don't see any way DAZ could redo this without blowing everything thing up in DS and ticking off users. It is the way it is.

I've invested a lot of money in storage in order to not have to worry about those things! :D

I didn't know figures slowed down the loading. It's a very specific situation, and it doesn't affect other type of products.

If I would have known, I would have bought fewer figures/morph packages, but I want to have installed everything I'm gonna use in the future. If that means having slower loading times, it's not the best, but installing things when I need them is definitely not suitable to my workflow!

  • Why Does It Take So Long To Load Figures? ("Solved", with GUIDE)

I'm pretty amazed that the proposed solution is to uninstall software you've paid for - and apparently people do this?!

Poor scalability coding should result in, well, fixing that before adding even more potential bog-downs.

...or is it ok for people to delete a bunch of morph packages and then get refunds for those?

For how disappointed I am as well, I think at this point it would be very hard to fix this issue.

Maybe they will take a different approach with Genesis 9? Not that I'm so eager to have to update my whole Daz library...

Now I can't uninstall what I've not uninstalled, because I've used it on previous project (and I've wasted two days loading all of my characters to check that), and I have no intention at all to purchase new figures or new morph packages. Either because I have enough, and because I don't want to slow loading further.

I can think of 3 things that differ between Genesis 1 and G8

    1) triax vs.dual quaternion weight mapping

    2) load with no textures vs. PBR textures

    3) facial expressions purely through morphs vs. rigged facial bones

I haven't understood much, but that explains that the problem is complex, thank you! :)

  • Editing a .duf file

Richard Haseltine I see. Not sure why there isn't an option for it either. Yeah, it definitely is using the gzip format. What compression settings you use for it does not matter as Daz uncompresses the file before loading itself too. As long it's formatted with gzip format Daz will load it up (had to rename the file extension to duf once again)

Regarding the MDL, I did say I was referring to the modifier library inside the duf files. And, I think I did mean the second part only. If that's what the old *.dsf format used to do. I can imagine why it's not supported, but I had this one issue with the dials not being locked. (see here: https://www.daz3d.com/forums/discussion/409491/keeping-locked-dials-intact)

My point was, to fix that up above, I could delete the ERC freezing for the particular dials I want. But that's a little cumbersome. I can do it better and easily if i could access those things from a text editor. Let's say, I could delete that data directly from the morph but that would mean a permanent change, to those morphs unless I keep a backup. Daz may not allow saving it in *.dsf format anymore, but I noticed, once you delete a property (dial) controlled by some other dial (the actual, parent morph), daz wrote all the data present inside the morph to the duf file, while keeping the deleted data/dial out of it.  So, I just thought there was a way to enable or force Daz to do that from the start, without having to remove any dials or so. I guess, I can imagine why the devs don't want to, but if they don't give better control within daz itself, I don't see any other options at all. It does kill a lot of expectations of mine at least.
